The British Heart Foundation has in January 2012 said “if you are not trained in mouth to mouth resuscitation, then just do chest compressions. This is very good advice and is also advocated by St John’s Ambulance and Red Cross. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all. So if you have someone who has collapsed and is not breathing, then in a very few minutes they are either going to die or suffer huge brain damage. So even without any training you can step up and make a difference: Step 1: Either call Landline 999 or 112 Mobile (either works on any phone) but if you have someone with you ask them to do it. So that you can start doing chest compressions immediately. Step 2: Kneel beside the casualty and find the centre of the chest between the breast bone and the collar bones. Place 1 hand on top of the other, straighten your arms and keep them straight and use your body weight to press down on the chest, pressing down 5 – 6 centimetres or 2 ½ inches in old money. This is quite a lot but this is what you need to do to make this all important difference between life and death. Then you have to rythmatically keep going at a rate of 120 compressions a minute, BHF suggest you sing staying alive by the Begees to get the right timing. You need to do this until someone takes over from you or the ambulance or someone with a defibrillator turns up. 30,000 people a year suffer heart attacks away from hospitals, and for every minute that they do not get some sort of help, their chance of survival goes down by 10%. So they need your help. Although the BFH are saying “no kissing” if you are trained to do mouth to mouth resuscitation which BFH acknowledge as “the Gold Standard”. Then you will be increasing your confidence in what you are doing and you will be giving the casualty a much better chance of survival.
