The new ABB FOCS Fiber-Optic Current
Sensor is a family of high accuracy sensors
for industrial high current measurement
applications based on the magneto-optic
effect.
ABB FOCS is available for uni- or bi-direc-
tional dc current measurement up to 500 kA.
With corresponding sensor head sizes, itoffers an easily installed, interference-free
alternative to the Hall effect current trans-
ducers.
Highlights
ABB FOCS is an unique fiber optic current
measurement device designed for simplified
installation, easy commissoning, increased
accuracy, and a digital signal for greatly enhan-
ced data acquisition management and negligi-
ble power consumption.
The Sensor Head is connected to the Sensor
Electronics via a glass sensor fiber cable. This
cable cannot be detached from the Sensor
Electronics.
All data conditioning and monitoring functions
provided by ABB FOCS, including scaling and
calibration, are designed and tested at works.
No software engineering is necessary on site.
ABB FOCS is delivered with standard firmware
installed and ready for operation.

• Measuring range: 0 to ± 500 kA (dependingon type), 20 % overcurrent capacity.
• Accuracy (1 to 120 % of rated current):
± 0.1 % of the measured value.
• Repeatability: ± 0.02 %.
• Linearity (1 to 120 % of rated current): ± 0.1 %.
• Sampling rate: 4 kHz.
• Temperature sensitivity: <± 0.002 % / °C.

• Sensor Electronics galvanically separated
from Sensor Head and current busbar.
• Optional control cubicle with optional
Process Panel PP210.• Sensor Electronics mounted on standard DIN
rails.
• Two analog outputs corresponding to the
measured dc current with selectable combi-
nations:
– 0...20 mA and 0...1 V, unidirectional
– 4...20 mA and 0.2...1 V, unidirectional
– ± 20 mA and ± 1 V, bidirectional.
• Communication with external control
systems:
– ABB PowerLINK, used to interface the
Sensor Electronics with an AC 800PEC
controller by means of fiber optic cables.
Standard optical module UF D128 for plas-
tic optical fiber (POF) or optional optical
module UF D130 for glass optical fiber(GOF) can be used.
– PROFIBUS DP fieldbus (optional) to con-
nect the Sensor Electronics to any third
party external control system. The Sensor
Electronics operates as PROFIBUS DP
slave.
• Ah and kAh counter pulses: 100 Ampere-
hour and 1 kilo Ampere-hour pulses via
PROFIBUS and PowerLINK.
• DC-current protection
– Instantaneous overcurrent detection
– Inverse time overcurrent detection
– Reverse current detection.
• 3 status relays with changeover contacts.

• Redundant 24 Vdc input, –15 %, +20 %.

ABB FOCS Measuring Principle
The sensor consists of a single-ended optical
fiber and the Sensor Electronics, including light
source, optical detection circuit and digital sig-nal processor. One sensing fiber loop is moun-
ted around the current carrying busbar.
The measured signal is independent of the par-
ticular busbar arrangement and insensitive to
magnetic stray fields from neighboring busbars.
The Sensor Electronics is galvanically isolated
from the Sensor Head and the busbars.
