About the African Bankers Association

African Bankers Association Corporate Profile

The African Bankers Association (ABA), also known as the African Banking In-dustry Association (ABIA), is the only Pan-African professional association of public and private/investor-owned banks and allied institutions operating in Africa. ABA provides leadership for the African banking industry and speaks as the global voice for the industry by strengthening intra-Africa partnerships and building global alliances. However, as a corporate membership-driven as-sociation, the Mission of the Association is “To provide value to members through a forum for sharing ideas, engaging the industry and its stakeholders, facilitating business opportunities and promoting the highest standards and best practices in the banking industry across Africa.” ABA is an open forum where the best and the brightest from every avenue of the banking industry and financial markets can gather to exchange ideas, standards, and marketing and research strategies. It works to ensure African bankers’ competitiveness in the global marketplace by reducing unnecessary costs and expanding market opportunities. The Association’s areas of focus include banking policy, tax incentives, business standards, regulatory process improvements, and investments in new technology and infrastructure. In its daily work, the Association interacts with key policymakers and stake-holders both in Africa and around the world to bring the African banking industry’s concerns, opportunities and challenges on national, regional and international agenda. It also partners with other regional and international organisations to promote best practices and global standards in the banking industry across Africa. Its annual events in Africa and overseas bring together industry leaders and professionals to shape Africa’s banking agenda. ABA serves both the public and private sectors of the African banking indus-try. Its membership comprises of both listed and private banks and financial institutions, and front-line product and service sellers and providers, agents, media, financiers, and affiliate members. Together, we challenge conventional maxims, take on the latest issues and discover new insights to benefit us all. This collaboration yields something invaluable: knowledge that empowers our members to have a true impact on their operations and their organisations.

7 African Bankers Association Corporate Profile

The African Bankers Association exists to develop and support the people, companies, and organisations that plan, build, maintain, sustain the African banking industry, and improve our communities. Just as communities count on their public agencies, ABA strives to be the organisation those banks and allied companies know they can count on. ABA offers the most comprehensive resources available in the areas of professional development tools, advocacy efforts, networking opportunities, investment promotion and outreach activities. Also, because of its unique vantage point as the only Pan-African organisation that covers the breadth of the African banking industry, ABA provides “one-stop shopping” for stake-holders, service providers and industry professionals and practitioners alike. However, there are a number of services the African Bankers Association offers its members. Most im-portantly, the association unites the collective voice of the industry on matters of national and regional regulatory and legislative policy. ABA accomplishes its policy work and outreach through the following membership activities: Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Our Communications program spreads the word about the value of banking. By building strong relation-ships with local, national, and trade news media, the banking industry can educate local, national and regional policymakers and the public at large about the need to protect and expand this crucial sustaina-ble economic source. ABA produces reports and materials industry members can use within their com-panies, building stronger relationships with their communities. Education and Conferences Our Education program offers local, national, regional, and sector-specific conferences that put you in touch with industry leaders, policy makers, and regulators as well as with potential new customers. These forums focus on the most critical issues facing the industry, provide new and creative solutions to problems you face every day, and give you access to a wealth of information by connecting you to those who know — within the industry and government. Professional Development Tools In pursuit of its mission and key objectives, ABA takes a multifaceted approach to professional develop-ment. Whether it is a conference sponsored by the organization; a banking institute offered by one of its members; credentialing of agents or individuals; or education delivered through online programs, in-structor-led live workshops, or text-based courses, ABA has a reputation for quality. Advocacy Efforts Policy makers and elected officials look to organizations like ABA every day to educate them on topics that will help them make important policy decisions that affect or impact the African banking industry.

ABA is committed to empowering its members to advocate for the needs of the banking community, and to monitor issues that impact the industry overall. ABA and other member advocates create and main-tain partnerships with key stakeholders, which establishes new lines of communication with policy makers and extends our outreach into the centre of public policy discussions on local, national, regional and international levels. Networking Opportunities Being able to network with peers is one of the primary reasons companies join associations like ABA. Because of ABA’s regional and national structures through its core members and strategic part-ners across the continent, members can immediately tap into a network of thousands of banking experts from across the continent or throughout the world. Through a variety of methods, members share on-the job experiences, request information on banking issues, discuss local and national topics of concern, work together to improve processes, and discover new impact possibilities. By networking with other banking practitioners and regulators, ABA members get support from their peers and receive valuable and useful information for their immediate informational needs in every facet of the banking industry, including information on the latest technologies, regulations and management trends. Outreach Activities Part of the association’s mission is to help communities understand the critical role of banking in our lives. At the same time, ABA strives to ensure that the public is aware of the importance and contribu-tion of banks and allied companies who work in the public interest to maintain and improve the quality of life of local communities. Through a series of innovative activities, ABA helps its members reach the public, preserve the history of banking, address national, regional and international issues, improve management and operations procedures in smaller communities, disseminate information on trends in the industry, and provide educational materials for school-age children and teens. Publications ABA publications provide you with everything you need to know in one monthly electronic communica-tion — the monthly African Banking Today newsletter and the quarterly African Banking Review/magazine — offering the latest information on regulatory and legislative policy, national and regional concerns, and issues on the horizon. These publications provide a steady stream of news and help you connect to experts in the industry. In addition, our special reports, website and issue briefs are re-sources at your disposal for you to add to your company’s tools to educate your local community and customers about the tremendous benefits of banking and innovative financial services.
