Help Gargano’s coast SPRING SUMMER 2012

Hello Frank, after many years of absense from Italy, involved in one of my business trips, I came across the beautiful Vieste, a graceful town on the Gargano’s coast. In this amazing setting of seacliff and ancient trabuc-chi, the fear lies consist of the natural heritage of the famous seacaves, can somehow give in with time and enviroment threats. Your great experiences in geology came quikly to my mind and i’m sure you can estabilish if the coast mentioned are at risk. A dear friend will meet you there. His name is Gino Notarangelo who is the owner of the beauti-ful residence “La Gattarella” Bring your family with you, you will find a warm welcome. I’ve sent you some nice clothes to end up your mission in style. Remember I want some beautiful pictures of your trip.

Ciao Frank, dopo tanti anni di assenza dall’Italia, immerso in uno dei miei viaggi di Lavoro, mi sono imbattuto nella splendida Vieste, una cittadina bellissima sul Gargano. In questa cornice di mare splendide scogliere e antichi trabucchi, incombe la paura (ormai diffusa in diverse parti del mondo), che il patrimonio naturalistico costituito dalle famo-sissime grotte di mare possa in qualche modo cedere al tempo ed alle minacce ambientali. Ho subito pen-sato alla tua grandissima esperienza in Geologia e sono sicuro che potrai stabilire se le coste citate sono a rischio. Ti accoglierà li sul posto un mio carissimo amico, Gino Notarangelo proprietario del meraviglioso Residence “La Gattarella”. Arrivo a ViesteIl viaggio è stato lungo, ma l’itinerario è davvero una pace per i sensi. Uno sce-nario fatto di acqua turchese, costiere a picco sul mare e splendida vegetazione

Il gattarella Village sembra un paradiso,non vedo l’ora che arrivi la mia famiglia.Erika e Linn arriveranno fra due giorni da Los Angeles. Io mi porterò avanti con il lavoro così apoi avrò tempo da dedicare anche a loro.

It was a long trip, but the jouney was a peace for my senses. A landscape of turquoise water, over looking the coast sea and beatiful green forest.The Gattarella Village seems like paradise, can’t wait untill my family gets here. In couple days time, Erika and Linn will be ar-riving from Los Angeles. I’ll take far my work so i can dedicate some time to them.

Queste rocce hanno una incredibile stratificazione. Negli anni Il mare ed il vento hanno modificato e modellato grotte e insenature diventate meta di turisti e appassionati.

Sono a circa 900 metri dal mare e sotto di noi an-cora roccia strati ficata . Una compattezza così garantisce un’ottima stabilità delle coste .

I’m about 900 meters from the sea and below us there are still stratified rocks. This compactness ensures excellent stability of the coast.

Questi trabucchi sono un antico strumento di pesca e sono ancorati come delle palafitte alla costa rocciosa. Sono enormi e sembrano resistere al tempo non solo come struttura ma anche come tradizione.

The “trabucchi” are ancient instrument used for fishing, wich are anchored to the piles of the rocky coast. They are very big structure and seem to resist in time not only as a structure, but also as tradition.

Dopo un pranzetto a base di pesce ap-pena pescato raggiungo l ’altro lato del grottino dove spunta una terrazza di avvistamento ancorata su una parete rocciosa ... Incredibile!!!

After a lunch of fresh fish i have reached the other side of the cave, where a sight seeing terrace is anchored on a rock wall... incredible!!!

Sembra assurdo pensare che anche da questa terrazza altissima si pratica una pesca a rete molto particolare .

It seems almost impossible that they use a particular method of net fisching from this high terrace. The day is almost finished, must hurry back to the hotel. I promised Erika a romantic candle light dinner, but she cannot immagine how Gino will amaze us.

E’ un nuovo giorno e si ritorna al mio lavoro. Andrò via mare ad esplorare un altro tratto della costa Sud di Vieste sulla mappa ho individuato un punto che sembra avere una conformazione diversa rispetto al resto della costa.

It’s a new day and i’m back to work. I will travel by sea to explore another tract of the Vieste south coast, where i identified a point of land that seems to have a different consistence than the others on the geological map.

Proprio come immaginavo, questo lembo di terra nella costa sud, ha una consistenza diversa e più friabile rispetto alle coste che ho visitato nei giorni precedenti. Qui potrei sta-bilire un minimo rischio idro geologico, ma fortunatamente non vi sono ne costruzioni, ne facili approdi turistici.

As I expected, this strip of land on the south coast, has a different consistency and more brittle compared to the coast i visited days ago. There could be a low hudro geological risk, but fortunately there are no buildings and no tourists around.

Assai sviluppato nel promontorio è il carsismo, con abbondanza di doline, grotte e inghiottitoi, così che l’ idrografìa superficiale al di fuori della zona litoranea è praticamente inesistente.

Well developed in the headland is the karst with abundance of sink holes and caves, so that the surface hydrography is outside the costal zone pratically inexistent.

Nel mio ultimo giorno di perlustrazione decido di avventurarmi verso l’interno, portandomi a ridosso della foresta Umbra nel Parco Nazionale del Gargano. E’ importante capire come la Puglia gestisce la salvaguardia dell’ambiente ed il patrimonio naturalistico.

Ihave decided on my last day to venture inwards, bringing me to the Umbrian Forest in the national park of Gargano. It’s important to know how Puglia manages the preservation of the enviroment and natural heritage.

Entrando nella foresta Umbra è possibile assaporare la brezza marina che percorre i sentieri inalberati di questo polmone naturale. Ho potuto constatare che la conformazione costiera del Gargano, ha un coefficente di rischio davvero limi-tato a poche e piccole zone. Farò esami più accurati dei miei rilievi appena tornerò nel mio ufficio di Los Angeles.

Entering the Umbrian forest you will feel a sea-breeze which blows along the pathways of this natural enviroment. I was able to estabilish the conformation of the Gargano’s coast, the risk is limited to very few and small areas.Returning to my office in Los Angeles i will ac-curately examin my remarks.

Qui è semplicemente tutto a misura di uomo, e gli abitanti dell’area Garganica potranno godere a lungo di questo patrimonio inesti-mabile. Sarà la salvaguardia delle coste ed uno sviluppo eco sostenibile a stabilire quante generazioni ancora potranno godere di questo pezzo di storia italiana.

A little relax on the beach with my family, before our departure back to the states. Everything here it’s meets uman life style, and the residents of Gargano’s area could have the long time pleas-ure of this priceless patrimony. The protection of coast and a sustainable economic development will estabilish how many generations will be able to enjoy this piece of Italian history.

E’ stato un viaggio ricco di emozioni, devo ringraziarti Adam per avermi dato questa bella opportunità. Questo lato dell’Italia per me ancora inesplorato mi invoglia a tornare per rivivere la magia di questa terra, così variegata di stili e diverse culture.
