Knowledge of community supports, or a willingness to learn, will be essenal. RJ’s forever family must be equipped to keep him connected to his culture. RJ is an enrolled member of a Nave American tribe. The Indian Child Welfare Act does apply in this case. Recruitment for RJ is NOT being limited to Nave American families only, but a family who can provide RJ with exposure to his culture and will raise him to be proud of who he is and where he comes from will be important. AASK - ADULTS ADOPTING SPECIAL KIDS SEPTEMBER 2012

A Big Dreamer! That describes Raymond (RJ) to a tee!! RJ loves to talk about being an NBA basketball player when he grows up and is quick to show off his brand new pink and purple basketball. His favorite basketball teams are Duke and the Miami Heat; although it was a tough call in this year’s NBA fi nals because RJ’s second favorite professional team is the OKC Thunder!!

RJ would like potenti al adopti ve families to know that he is excited about fi nding a forever family. He thinks all kids deserve a home to call their own and a family who never gives up on them. RJ is open to many diff erent kinds of

families and living situati ons. RJ’s team feels it is best if he is the only or the youngest child in the home. This kind of family set up gives RJ the best opportunity to reach his fullest potenti al and sets him up for success. Where the family lives is not an issue for RJ. He has lived in both big and litt le towns as well as the country. RJ does love the animals in his current placement and takes pride in doing his chores in the horse barn well.

RJ’s love of animals transfers to people as well. He is currently volunteering at a local nursing home and enjoys visiti ng with the elderly residents there. As a matt er of fact, visiti ng with anyone is one of RJ’s favorite things to do. RJ is a great example of how courage in meeti ng new people generally leads to making new friends - young, old and in between. RJ’s tendency to visit can also get him in a bind, especially in school. To gain RJ’s focus in the classroom, teachers generally place him at the front of the room and in groups where he can be closely observed and reminded to stay on task. RJ has done well this last school year, completi ng the 8th grade, with the help of an Individualized Educati on Plan (IEP) to address his att enti on, organizati on and to give an extra boost to his reading and math skills.

RJ is very proud of the fact that he

has made some excellent progress in addressing how his diffi cult past has aff ected his behaviors and relati onships. RJ is currently in Individual Therapy to address issues of grief/loss and to learn appropriate behaviors when dealing with others. Structure, supervision and consistency in relati onships will be vital for RJ.

A family for RJ must not only be able to identi fy and model positi ve relati onships, but they must also be acti ve advocates for RJ to conti nue to receive the services that have brought him so far. Knowledge of community supports, or a willingness to learn, will be essenti al. RJ’s forever family must be equipped to keep him connected to his culture. RJ is an enrolled member of a Nati ve American tribe. The Indian Child Welfare Act does apply in this case. Recruitment for RJ is NOT being limited to Nati ve American families only, but a family who can provide RJ with exposure to his culture and will raise him to be proud of who he is and where he comes from will be important.

Director’s Corner by Leanne Johnson

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” It is with sincere appreciation that we must bid farewell and “Happy Retirement” to Kathy Quaife, an AASK Worker in the Fargo offi ce. Kathy started her AASK adventure in the early 1998 as a contract worker at a time when there was one full time worker covering the Jamestown and Fargo regions. She moved into a full time position in the spring of 1999. Since then, she has put forth many, many hours of diligent and dedicated hours for the children and families of North Dakota. I have had the distinct honor to work with Kathy during these years and have observed fi rsthand the heart and compassion Kathy brought to her role as an Adoption Worker. Comments from families, youth and partners through the years have spoke to Kathy’s strengths of patience, caring spirit, thoroughness, responsiveness and overall knowledge. It is always a blessing to walk by her offi ce during the holidays and graduation season to see fi rsthand the number of lives touched by her eff orts. She has certainly planted many seeds through her time with our program and she will be greatly missed. Kathy is looking forward to focusing more time on her important role as ‘grandmother’ and we wish her only the best in her retirement!

Local Happenings by Sonja McLean

The AASK program has recently received a grant to increase from a part-time to a full-time recuiter through the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program. The Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter is a unique position within the AASK program. The grant allows a full time adoption worker to focus on recruiting families for children who are waiting to be matched with their forever families. It provides aggressive, child focused recruitment activities for sibling groups, older children, and children with moderate-severe special needs, as well as general recruitment and community outreach.

As the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter, I will be assisting caseworkers in gathering the children’s history and referral information to our program. It allows time for me to get to know the child I am working with, build their trust, and develop an open, honest relationship with them that assists me in learning about who they are and what type of family would be the best fit for them. After building this relationship, I will be able to assess their readiness for adoption and prepare them for the big life changes that are in their future through the process of being matched with a family. I will also build close relationships with the people who are important to the children and who support them on a day to day basis. These people are going to be imperative to a successful transition into an adoptive home. Along with this, I will be conducting search efforts for relatives, informal

supports, and other connections that the children have had along the way to find potential adoptive resources with the people that already know them. We will be able to recruit for families that share a child’s interests, such as utilizing culinary school billboards and newsletters to find a family for a child who dreams of becoming a chef, or highlighting a child’s compassion for animals by recruiting families at Kennel Clubs, pet stores, and training facilities.

We are also able to raise awareness for the need of adoptive families for children from the foster care system. This grant allows us to be present at conferences, schools, community activities, and local events. I have an assortment of recruitment materials that can be made available to our community partners to aid their recruitment efforts.

The AASK program in partnership with Wendy’s Wonderful Kids and the Dave Thomas Foundation has been successful in matching approximately 39 children through the part-time efforts since beginning in 2006. We are looking forward to many more successful efforts on a full time basis!

Nurtured Heart Approach Thought of the Month by Sonja McLean, LSW

Last quarter, we discussed “Polaroids”, which give you the opportunity to lecture your child-for doing something RIGHT! If you recall, “Polaroids” are used to express your appreciation for the good choices your child is making or appropriate behaviors your child is exhibiting.

This quarter, we are going to focus on “Canons”. “Canons” are noticing when your child is NOT breaking the rules. Let’s say that your two children are playing and one of them grabs a toy train from the other child. You are more than likely expecting this to create an argument over the train. Instead, your children continue playing. An immediate “Canon” response would be: “Susie, choosing not to grab back the train from your brother shows me that you really think about things before you decide what to do.” You could go on to say, “You chose to be considerate and you chose not to break the rule.”

“Canons” show your child that you are watching. They celebrate the child’s positive behavior much like a “Polaroid”, but it takes it one step further and tells the child what their actions say about them. Because the Nurtured Heart Approach is based upon strengths and positives, by pointing out that your child is able to make smart choices, or follow the rules, or be a good friend, you are positively infl uencing how they perceive themselves within the world and building their self esteem. You are strengthening their ability to make healthy decisions and stand up for themselves as they get older. How you respond to your child impacts how your child views themselves. So, tell them what their greatness is!

Be sure to check out www.childsuccessfoundation.com for online Nurtured Heart Training opportunities!

An Intern’s Point of View by Samantha Watson

Since May 14, I have been interning at Catholic Chariti es North Dakota with the Adults Adopti ng Special Kids (AASK) program. I chose to intern here because I knew I wanted to work in adopti ons in the future, and this would allow me to gain some experience in the fi eld. Over the course of my internship, I have learned a lot about special needs adopti on and the processes associated with it.

The AASK program is the only one in North Dakota that provides adopti on services for foster children and the families adopti ng them throughout the enti re state. As a result, I spent a lot of ti me traveling with my fi eld instructor to have visits with the children in order to get to know them. I used the informati on I gathered from the children and their foster families to write thorough Child Adopti on Assessments about the foster children. These adopti on assessments are used to share informati on about the children with potenti al adopti ve families.

As an intern, I also was able to accompany my fi eld instructor to the child and family team meeti ngs for the waiti ng children.

These meeti ngs included the foster family, the child’s legal custodian, the AASK adopti on worker, and various other people involved in the child’s case. At these meeti ngs, we would discuss the child’s current functi oning, his or her adopti on plan, and any recommendati ons regarding the adopti on. It was a great experience to be able to collaborate with various individuals and agencies to work towards the child’s goal of adopti on.

One of my favorite parts of my internship experience was assisti ng in the family selecti on process. I would help contact families interested in parti cular waiti ng children, as well as their social workers, to gather informati on about them to determine whether or not they might be a good match for the child. I also was able to parti cipate in family selecti on meeti ngs and contribute my thoughts about the child and each potenti al family. It was incredibly rewarding to be able to fi nally select adopti ve families for children who have been in foster care waiti ng for a family for years.

Another rewarding part of my internship was att ending adopti on fi nalizati on hearings and celebrati ons. It was touching to witness children legally become permanent members of their adopti ve families.

Overall, throughout my internship, I have been able to parti cipate in a wide variety of acti viti es associated with the adopti on process. It was amazing to see all of the hard work that the staff at AASK must complete in order to fi nd “forever families” for waiti ng children. I have had a wonderful experience and would recommend Catholic Chariti es North Dakota as a great place for internships or employment.

half. Th ere I did a wide variety of jobs, but my main focus was on foster care case management.

I reside in Rugby with my fi ance. I just got engaged to Jim Brossart on May 16, 2012. We have not set a date yet. Jim has 3 wonderful children that I have come to love very much. Th e oldest on is Trevor (13) he is in basketball and loves to play video games. Sierra (11) is also in basketball and likes to write books. She has such a wild imagination. Katrina (8) loves to play outside. She also loves to play with her Barbies. Jim is a farmer so we all get to help him out on the farm. It is the start of harvest now so we are really busy.

During my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies and scrap booking. I

just started a new hobby of gardening this summer. I have come to enjoy that very much as well. I am very excited to be a part of the PATH/AASK team and am looking forward to meeting many new people!

Elleanna is 8 but will quickly tell you she is “almost 9” and will start third grade this fall. She is very good at playing the piano and enjoys doing it for church and for family. Amelia Bedelia books really captured her att enti on this summer. She also spends her free ti me working on various craft s and making cards. Both girls enjoy being outside playing, whether in the backyard or out at the park.

Amanda is the chief organizer, planner, cook, and cab driver for the home. When she is not doing these things, she is a Registered Nurse by profession working at a long term care center part ti me. In her free ti me, she enjoys tending to her garden, reading books, and going

out for coff ee and sweet tea with her girlfriends. You can also fi nd her in her craft corner stamping cards.

Brian is a driver for UPS. He enjoys being outside playing with the girls, going for bike rides, and jogging. Brian has become quite the handyman doing projects and renovati ons to our home. He also enjoys watching movies and playing his guitar, including for Sunday worship, and hanging out with his dad.

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour Hold a regatta on your tabletop with these simple walnut ships whose colorful leaf sails come courtesy of the fall season. Materials • Walnut shell • Leaf • Twig • Clay

Instructions1. For each, you’ll need an intact half of a walnut shell (see our tip below).2. Thread a leaf onto a twig for a mast and a sail. Secure the mast to the inside of the shell with a small ball of clay.

Tips:To open a walnut without breaking the shell (an adult’s job), hold it steady on a cutting board, insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver or a butter knife into the flat end of the seam, and carefully pry the halves apart.

The Park Christi an School of Moorhead (PaY Group) presented the AASK program a generous gift toward books and workbooks for the children who are adopted into their “forever” homes. The materials help to provide positi ve reinforcement and a great understanding of adopti on. The donati on directly benefi ts our youth within AASK. Thank you so much for truly making a diff erence in the lives of so many “forever” families.

Did you know individuals can also support the program? Online donati ons can be made on our website at www.aasknd.org. Donati ons can also be mailed to CCND/AASK at 5201 Bishops Boulevard - Suite B - Fargo, ND 58104.

Donati ons can be made in memory of a loved one who has passed or to honor a special occasion such as a birthday, graduati on, wedding or birth of a child. What a great way to give tribute to someone who has impacted your life while making a diff erence for a child in the AASK program.

Thank you for your support! It helps the program provide that “special touch” for the children and families we serve!
