Data Centre: Airflow
1/5
Create an efficient data centre.
Data Centre AirflowIt is estimated that 50-80% of valuable conditioned (cooled) air does not reach the intake of IT equipment due to unsealed floors and openings.
Before After• Hot/Cold Aisle Containment• Fill Air Voids• Floor Tile Alignment• Cable Management• Server Fan Direction
Data Centre Airflow40% Annual Energy Savings in AS3 Data Centre, with more savings attainable.
Ambient temperature drop from 24 °C to 16°C
Change of 8 degrees
Lowered Air Conditioning demand to raise temperature back to 24°C
Estimated 40% Annual Energy Saving
Further 2°C change estimated!
Savings paying for HPC Chiller!

Audit Visitor Access : Who, What, Why?
Data Centre AccessNovember 2015 - New Access Policy ImplementedFully audited trail for Data Centre Visitors
Data Centre AccessJanuary 2015 - Draft copy of Data Centre Out Of Hours Access form.
Data Centre: Moves, Adds, Changes (MAC’s)
3/5
Audit and increase visibility for changes within the data centre.
Data Centre MAC’s2015 - New Policy Created
Data Centre: Safety
4/5
Ensure a safe working environment.
Earthing & BondingA server rack with 8 servers generates 10 mA-20 mA leakage currents – 50 mA is enough to kill.
Organised the appropriate earthing and bonding of each rack in AS3 DC.
Liaised with external Electricians
Organised access
Ensured job was completed without downtime
Each network rack now has the appropriate earthing ensuring a safe environment.
Data Centre: Cabling Refresh
5/5
Rework the way data cabling is connected.
Cabling Refresh“The decision to place network data and power cabling into overheadcable trays can lower cooling fan and pump power consumption by 24%.” Schneider Electric
Under-floor cabling contributes to energy losses in three ways:
• Blockage of air due to cables
• Bypass air from rack cable cut-outs
• Bypass air from (PDU) cut-outs
Liaised with external contractors
Organised access
Ensured job was completed without downtime
Each rack now has 24 port copper and fibre patch panels back to one central location.
Data Centre: Miscellaneous
Managed PDU RolloutFully managed Power Distribution Unit (PDU) solution
Rollout of managed PDU’s.
Liaised with equipment owners
Document Ownership
Plan Suitable Downtime
Label Commando Sockets / PDU / Fuse
Each network rack now has at least two fully manageable PDU’s.
LightingEfficient lighting system installed
Organised the install of new lights and emergency lighting in AS3 DC.
Liaised with external Electricians
Organised access
Ensured job was completed without downtime
PIR System implemented
20 minute no presence timeout.

Disaster Recovery (DR) Room
Backup DR SiteConvert an old computer room into a data backup site to house 300k worth of hardware.
Preparation
Room required clearing of old equipment, furniture & general mess.
Air Temperature
Old Air Condition unit was running insufficiently and would not cope with increased load in room.
Power
Source, order, install & configure UPS
