Aarish Netarwala Portfolio 2014

Among many things, my interests include keeping abreast with the latest in technology, world news and politics. I am fascinated by the future trends of technology and how it will shape our society. I enjoy traveling and consider it to be an important point of inspiration as its exposure helps to broaden our perspective by absorbing knowledge from various surroundings, especially when as designers we often get our best ideas on the go.

I am an aspiring designer who believes in change by design. Being idea centric, my approach taken to design is to communicate effectively, ideas and experiences through products. Enriching the human experience and making a tangible difference in peoples lives is both my inspiration and motivation. I am currently seeking a full time job having recently graduated with a Goldsmith bachelors degree in product design from Lasalle College of The Arts, Singapore.

1Design For the MoviesLasalle College Of The Arts, 2012 The Star Wars series employed hundreds of industrial designers. The science fiction movies propelled to fame for various reasons - special effects , a great story line and for being a visionary film far ahead of its time. Our class project brief required us to design a movie prop for any science fiction movie, with the prop having an outcome or change in the film. I have designed a flying droid which acts as an aid in communications for jedi’s. The droid is named holocore, it is meant to produce a holographic image from its center of the communicator at the other end.

Was responsible for the packaging design for an established honey company looking to enter the consumer market - Bee Care India. Working hand in hand with the marketing company JWT to produce designs to meet the clients demands.

Re-Usable

To use to our advantage the fact that a typical Indian household has many containers and bottles stored in the kitchen which are the re-used packaging of products. By intentionally creating a product packaging that is re-usable, consumers are constantly reminded of

the product

Volume Oriented

The Indian consumers want to a bang for their buck, a bigger volume feel enhances that notion and catches the

eye of the consumer.

Premium Packaging

The company Bee Care wanted to have a glass feel to a PET bottle and to have

a premium feel.

3Watch DesignPersonal Project, 2012

Just a watch. I decided to design one as I wanted to improve my 3D Software skills after a semester of college using 3D modeling tools. I basically took a rough sketch after a bit of exploration and constructed it on Rhino. The rest i kept changing on the software itself, by the time I was done I had a much better idea on how to work on Rhino and Keyshot. Moving through the images you can see the development. I was inspired by the Lamborghini Murcielago.

Grit is an adventure tool made for a novice or amateur camper or adventurer. It uses the extra gears found inside the shaver as a dynamo mechanism. Furthermore the dynamo is used to charge two ‘AA’ batteries which provide

power for USB charging, A flashlight/ lantern and a motor powered fire starter.

Sketches

It is important for an adventure tool to be utilitarian as it needs to be compact and space saving, Grit provides some of the functions below. -

A USB charger port (a) is made available to charge phones which can be a necessitly, along with any USB chargable device.

The twist flashlight is extendable so that it may provide360º light and serve as a lantern. Since there is only one light source, there are two lenses, one in front of the LED is concave and diverges light to the sides (b). This is needed to allow light to be dispersed at 360º. The second is convex on the outer frame so that when the light is in a closed position it serves as a flashlight (c) by negating the divergent rays through the lens.

The motor from the electric shaver is used to start fires. The way it works is that a spring loaded disk using a motor rotates around a flint stone disk, the heat and friction give off sparks which light the tinder of a bonfire. Its advantages including working in the rain or snow and in windy climates where lighting fires can take a lot of time and patience.

The crank shaft (d) is used to recharge the ‘AA’ batteries so that an electrical charge is not needed.

Baransu | Balance - Flower Pot Lasalle College Of The Arts, 2012

Baransu is the Japanese word for balance. This pot is designed to signify the importance of nature to bring balance on Earth. Without the Bonsai plant the pot would be wobbly and unstable, it is only the presence of the plant that brings balance to the design. The plant pot is made entirely out of faux wood.

Diploma Final Year ProjectLasalle College Of The Arts, 2013

Masterchef was conceptualized to enable consumers to live healthy by gaining healthy and highly nutritional meals cooked through an appinterface, allowing one to arrive home to a healthy prepared meal. With a simple tap on a Smartphone this product uses a wireless router to gain the desired recipe of lunch or dinner and sends the necessary information to the product that connects in your home via Internet. The product uses a vending machine mechanism to transfer raw ingredients into the induction cooking area. Controlled to the minutest detail, the heat, moisture, filtration, odor, safety and various factors are taken into account to allow for a non-human contact cooking process.

The Problem // Instant Gratification

“Why is the Internet so slow”, We’ve all heard or said that one. Technology, along with its benefits has given rise to a growing sense of impatience and instant gratification due to the speed of communication and response. This has trickled down to the activities in

our daily lives.

Microwave meals and Tv dinners. Cup noodles and ready to eats. Fast food and on the go stalls. These are the kinds of meals we need to avoid, yet we continue to consume more. There is a growing concern with the rise in obesity and part of the process is travel.

More and more we tend to decrease the amount we walk by driving - to decrease the amount of travel time.

Design Intent - Masterchef was conceptualized to enable consumers to live healthy by gaining healthy and highly nutritional meals cooked through a virtual interface. With a simple tap on a Smartphone via the masterchef app, this product uses a wireless router through to gain the desired recipe of lunch for dinner connects in your home via Internet. Masterchef uses a vending machine mechanism to transfer raw ingredients into the induction cooking area. Controlled to the minutest detail, the heat, moisture, filtration, odor, safety and various factors are taken into account to allow for a non-human contact cooking process. This enables the user to come home to a

healthy cooked meal without having to wait.

1. Electrolux provides various freshfoods to customers in weighted andsized quantities. These ingredients such as Meat, greens, Rice, Pasta come in packets of 12. These tablet shaped quantities of food are in frozen format which are stored in the product storage compartment in the product you have at home

2. The product at home is wifi enabled. From the users phone an app connects to the product. Between various different recipes and meal plans one can choose what to eat for lunch and dinner, from anywhere, at any time so that on arriving home the meal is hot and ready.

3. The product itself, is the size of a oven with a stove. It stores batches of frozen ingredients in an alpha numeric format in a refrigerated compartment . The ingredients of a pre programmed recipe are added to the cooker using a vending machine mechanism of tranferring ingredients to the cooking area.

Design Language

Electrolux

The company focuses on innovations that are thoughtfully designed, based on extensive consumer insight, to meet the real needs of consumers and professionals. Scandinavian heritage, plays a key role in shaping the products’ design and in the development of new and sustainable appliances. Scandinavian design values – freedom, intuition, authenticity, comfort and simplicity – render the products more visible than others in the retailers’ stores.

White goods signify for the relatively high-priced, heavy, and slow-moving electronic goods like fridge, air-conditioner, micro woven etc.

It’s evident that white Goods mainly include all ranges of home appliances.

Using the design Language of white goods and home appliances with smooth round corners and plastic moulded familiar radii a subliminal message is sent to the user who understands these recognizable objects.

This is done to humanize a very mechanical structure that has a lot of machine like qualities. As a consumer one does not want something to obstruct the visual language of the kitchen. To familiarize themselves with a new product makes it easier to accept.

7Serenity | Relaxation SpaceLasalle College Of The Arts, 2013

Serenity was conceptualized to be used as a defined space for one to meditate, relax and reflect. In today’s society, meditation has become an increasingly popular lifestyle choice for those who seek to relax and take time off for themselves. This piece of furniture was designed keeping in mind the core values of relieving stress in the urban environment while switching off from work. It is specifically tailored to make the user relax through the practice of meditation. There are also more subtle influences which affect the subconscious such as aesthetics, aroma and the option to use ergonomic postures that influence relaxation more than a working posture. For instance the position of leaning inward during meditation subconsciously makes one introspective while the act of leaning backward like on a lounge chair causes one to relax and reflect in a retrospective manner.

“The essence of Vietnam is fierce independence based in Buddhism and Taoism.”The Vietnamese have successfully resisted thousands of years of trauma and endured many hardships and wars, yet when you meet them today you find them resilient strong willed with a calming presence. Vietnam is different. Its tranquility and peacefullness coupled with a confluence of different cultures makes for a wonderful place to visit and live.

Conscious contentment is a term I have coined for the Vietnamese because feel the people in vietnam are happy and content and yet they appreciate and know that they are content, almost like a celebration of their freedom. A self awareness that allows them to be happy and optimistic, to look at the better side of life and to be happy with what they have. The Vietnamese are known to be some of the most optimistic people in the world as was discovered in a recent survey. The enduring and strong spirit of the Vietnamese makes them appreciate what they have. This is more than just a philosophy

in Vietnam, It is a way of life.

Manufacturability and Sustainability

Starting off as a piece of wood dark wood either stained ash wood or walnut, the main frame shape is cut out either manually using a jig - saw power tool or a machine to cut it. The pieces for the back rest are then cut out of that as shown in the third picture to the left below. The frame is machine sanded to allow for the curved surfaces and the back pieces are screwed together from behind to conceal them. The back piece is then slotted into the frame after the slot for it has been routered. The base is added which features a black laminate and holds the frame in place with dowel joints and glue that help the frame rest firmly. The lower cushion

is recessed into the piece which has a comortable thickness of nine cen-timeters. It is made of a semi firm foam to allow for balance and comfort during meditation and regular relaxation. The upper cushion is filled in with buck wheat which has been used by the Japanese for ages in their bed mattresses. Buck wheat gives a firm yet comfotable seating while adding the spring neccesary to take the tension of the muscles while meditating. The upper cushion is then is stitched manually. The design takes into consideration the wastage of material hence very little wastage is created, by re-using the maximum possible amount of wood.

ConceptualFramework

The design intent is to improve the primary healthcare situation at a grassroot level in India by designing a better system and product to diagnose a large number of patients effectively by empowering the doctor.

?What problems do patients and doctors in the primary health care system face today ?

Misdiagnosis :- Patients do not receive adequate care, studies have shown that misdiagnosis rates of doctors are as high as 20%.

Patient Records :- Unlike urban medical systems, patients do not have an electronic medical record. A medical record docotrs say can be 80% of the diagnosis.

People have to walk 5 or more km to reach a primary health clinic.

Sometimes there is no trained doctor at all, patients might need to go to the city to the main hospitals.

Poor Infrastructure :- With an inefficiency rate of about 60% , rural doctors are very poorly trained and require better information and

Time :- With a huge number of patients doctors are left no choice but to use their nurse as a second doctor. Within a short span it is hard to get the vitals, physical examination, symptoms and medical history from a patient to diagnose them correctly.

Equipment :- With inadequate equipment doctors must send serious cases to the hospitals in the city or sometimes hold a tele medical conference over a low speed internet connection.

Patient Records :- Doctors are expected to keep patient records of the alloted areas and submit them to the government for information purposes.

Solution

Each person has a portable data storage which is rubberized to withstand damage and water. The device works on a NFC data chip to wirelessly communicate data to the main tablet PC. The device also has a USB port and TRS socket to that the doctor can transfer data as alternate backups . This device continuously keeps a record on the patients last visit, symptoms, tests and diagnosis which forms a medical history over time. This enables doctors to understand the problem much better. Any family history which is hereditary is registered too.

Empowering each person with a data storage device makes it simpler to handle a massive scale data management of patients. When rural populations migrate to urban areas or visit different hospitals their personal medical history device becomes very useful.

The doctors kit is designed to diagnose patients using the essential equipment required. Mis diagnosis is a big concern as doctors are not adequately informed or trained along with being incredibly short on time due to the high volume of patients.

Each doctor has one medical kit, that is a total of 23,000 kits for the rural health care system. This kit includes an android tablet which runs a medical expert system, providing doctors with diagnosis and treatments based on a patients symptoms, vital stats, medical history, physical examination. The software keeps patients records and can provide doctors with a video conferencing option so that doctors in the main hospitals can diagnose serious cases.

Each kit has diagnostic tools which include, thermometer, stethoscope, blood pressure measurement, electrocardiogram and SPO2 oxygen blood levels. They constantly update the medical expert system and input their readings when used on a patient.

The kit needs to be portable to allow for the doctor to make his field visits daily.
