Recently, it was brought to my attention that renters in the neighborhood think they are ineligible for membership in the Victoria Park Civ-ic Association; this is not true. Thanks. We hope it helps. We have repeatedly asked for a radar sign to no avail. Recently, a motorist knocked down a magnolia tree in the swale, then abandoned their car. Video footage was retrieved by homeowner, but police appear uninterested. We can only surmise FLPD’s casual attitude toward our issues is due to much more serious events oc-curring elsewhere. Maybe we should feel fortunate to have our problems.

We are asking residents to keep their outside lights on all night, particularly those which shine on parked cars. There are many areas where property owners are vulnerable that are not lit by streetlights, so we have to step up and do it ourselves. Please ask your neighbors or landlords to install dusk-till-dawn lights.

Recently, complaints were made to FLPD about door-to-door solicitors. Solicitors are required to possess a permit, and can only solicit between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. In my ex-perience, solicitors never have a permit, and their solicita-tions are usually suspicious. The police urge you to call the non-emergency number if you are suspicious; they request a good description of the person, including what they are wearing, what direction they travel, and the license plate number of the car, if one is involved. We are urging FLPD to cite these people rather than just tell them to leave; evi-dently, residents are supposed to have a clearly-displayed “no solicitors” sign for this to happen.

Suggestions were made to us by City personnel to urge residents to attempt to maintain and watch empty proper-ties. This will help to reduce crime, so if you live next to an empty house, it is in your best interest to collaborate with your neighbors to make the house look lived-in. Park your vehicles in front, mow the yard, etc. Meanwhile, please pres-sure the City for help, and urge the owners to get the house sold or rented. Empty houses are magnets for trouble (that’s why insurance companies do not want to insure unoccupied homes). E-mail Commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom, Mayor Jack Seiler and Code Compliance Offi cer Ursula Thime un-til action is taken. We need you to hold our City offi cials ac-countable for blight in our neighborhood. Remember, Gov-ernment’s role is to do for us what we cannot legally do for ourselves. If we show them we care about VP, maybe they will care about VP and take action on our behalf.

We look forward to seeing you at our meetings on the fi rst Wednesday of every month (except August), at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Saint Anthony School. The school is lo-cated on the north side of NE 2nd Street, west of the in-tersection with NE 9th Avenue. ALL residents of Victoria Park are encouraged and welcomed to attend, whether or not you are a member.

Aesthetics Committee ReportBy Jeanne Lalli

Meeting at the home of Debbie and Scott Gronsbel is always a greatly-anticipated event. Their outdoor space is perfect for meeting and eating, our favorite things. Also, one can always count on marvelous food. This night it was grilled fi sh and/or chicken tortillas with fruit and little chocolate cupcakes for dessert. Thanks for another banner dinner.

The Dog Park sub-committee of Strat and Judy Stepan,

Harvey Yampolsky and Preston Watkins reports that they have been diligently contacting neighboring civic associa-tions to get volunteers to be on what we are calling the “Su-per Committee.” We need to form such a group to be able to negotiate with strength with the City, and to solicit dona-tions.

Larry and Jeanne reported that they met with City Com-missioner Rodstrom to update her on several issues. For one thing, we are looking for her support in getting light-ing for Progress Hammock Memorial Greenway. Charlotte will raise our idea of wrapping or painting utility boxes with Commission members, and hopefully will direct us to the

proper City department that could provide us with a list of where they all are and who owns them. We do not plan on doing much about this until after Art and Jazz, unless some-one else wants to take it on.

Larry reported that we submitted three nominations for

the City’s Community Appearance Awards: a private resi-dence, Annie Beck roadway improvements, and Progress Hammock Memorial Greenway.

Landscape Guardian Lindsay Koehler, along with help-

ers Jeanne Lalli and master digger Scott Gronsbel, are re-sponsible for spiffi ng up the south side of our NE 6th Street entryway. Sprinklers there are fi nally working again. Next on the agenda is Progress Hammock Memorial Greenway: it has been cleaned and trimmed well enough; now new plantings need to be purchased and installed.

Remember, if you need information on the “spiraling”

white fl y that is invading our neighborhood, you can go to vpca.org and click on the link for articles from two sources.

Our next meeting will be April 9 (not April 2) at 7 p.m.

at Jeanne’s auxiliary house at 600 NE 17th Way, with food catered by Larry Wallenstein and featuring French Cana-dian cuisine. See ya.

Traffic ReportBy Bob Oelke

We’ll be holding a Traffi c Workshop with Mayor Seiler and Commissioner Rodstrom on Thursday, April 5th, at 7 p.m. in

the Saint Anthony Parish Hall (next to the school cafeteria). This Workshop will follow up on the traffi c concerns we identi-fi ed at our March workshop. The City is currently implementing a “Complete Streets” policy, so in addition to automobile traffi c issues, we’ll also discuss possible improvements to pedestrian and bicyclist safety. All residents of Victoria Park are welcome to attend: your input is valuable.

Broward County’s plans to resurface East Broward Boulevard have been delayed due to budget constraints; the project has been pushed back to 2014. This delay might come with a silver lining -- it gives us time to plan possible improvements on Broward Boulevard east of Federal Highway. In the past, Victoria Park has worked with Coolee Hammock and Beverly Heights to calm traffi c on this stretch of Broward. One idea fl oated in the past was a landscaped median similar to those installed on NE 13th Street and NE 15th Avenue. Past plans have run into jurisdictional and funding problems, but recent redistricting of the City Commission has simplifi ed the jurisdictional problem -- and with a few years to plan ahead, we may be able to tap new funding sources. We welcome your input; send comments, concerns, and questions to traffi [email protected]

Vice President Catherine Maus opened the meeting at 7 p.m. and welcomed any new members. Catherine asked for a motion to approve the February minutes; Lindsay Koehler made the motion and it was seconded by Larry Wallenstein, and was approved.

Fort Lauderdale Police Report: Offi cer David Soika reported that there was a big dip in crime last month, with only four residential burglaries in February, compared to nine in January. He credited alert VP neighbors with the reduction.

Charlie King asked about a recent car crash on Victo-ria Park Road. Offi cer Soika was unaware of this particu-lar accident and could not give any information. A resident in the 200 block of NE 17th Avenue asked about the rash of burglaries there. Bob Oelke asked about problems with solicitors; Offi cer Soika explained that solicitor scams are occurring across the City; he cautioned us not to answer the door if you do not know the caller. He noted that solicitors with permits are allowed to go door to door from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The current scam involves one person knocking on the front door, distracting the homeowner, while another enters the home to steal. It was noted that a midday burglary on VP Road resulted in the criminal being apprehended.

Code Enforcement: Compliance Offi cer Ursula Thime said that the Hustler store and gas station at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and NE 15th Avenue have improved their landscaping; code issues are still pending. Ursula ad-vised us that anyone with a car canopy without a permit will be notifi ed soon about taking these temporary structures down, since they can become dangerous during storms.

Fort Lauderdale Urban Forester: Gene Dempsey joined us to address the spiraling whitefl y pest. He encour-aged us to use pesticides per label instructions. New pests crop up all the time; Gene keeps his web site up to date with new pest info: http://ci.ftlaud.fl .us/life/urban_forestry/index.htm

Committee Reports:

Aesthetics: Larry announced the upcoming Art and Jazz festival that will be on Sunday, March 25th from noon to 4 p.m. in Victoria Park. The committee is seeking volun-teers and silent auction donations for this event.

The Dog Park proposal is going well and they are work-ing with several surrounding neighborhoods.

Three applications were submitted for Community Ap-pearance Awards.

Aesthetics thanks the Landscape Guardians for all of their wonderful work.

A program to wrap utility boxes with art is moving for-ward; Commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom supports the proj-ect.

Abandoned Pet Rescue thanked the Association for the funds raised at our Cause 4 Paws event.

Larry made a motion to approve the use of historic street names on decorative signs which will be placed as a result of our winning NCIP grant. The motion carried after dis-cussion.

Children: Nicole Stodard said that she will be updating us soon on the Easter Egg Hunt.

Fort Lauderdale Council of Civic Associations: Mad-elene reported that the Council recently had a speaker on climate change. The next Council meeting is Tuesday, March 13th.

Membership: Jen Diehl reported that we now have 363 members, 72 of whom are new to the Association.

Newsletter: Lindsay reported everyone received their newsletters on time this month. She surveyed our reaction to the March issue’s cover.

Traffi c: Bob announced that there will be a workshop next Wednesday at the Holiday Park Activity Center to dis-cuss any and all traffi c issues (bikes, sidewalks, speeders, vehicles parking on lawns and swales, traffi c signs, etc.) in hopes that we will have some consensus for the April 5th meeting with City representatives.

The Broward Boulevard repaving project has been de-layed until 2014; Bob hopes the delay will work to our ad-vantage, as we may be able to infl uence a better landscap-ing/lane design.

Recycling: JD Camp reported that we received a check from the City for our recycling efforts; he thanked our vol-unteers. He said there would be an Earth Day event in Birch State Park on April 21st. JD made a motion for VPCA to

Treasurer’s ReportBy Bob Oelke

It’s the height of our fundraising season. We’ve just completed another Art and Jazz in the Park, and inaugu-rated VPCA’s latest fundraiser effort: the Spring Clean-Up community yard sale.

My thanks to Charlie Ladd, who offered us the use of the former Honda dealership parking lot on Federal Highway for the Clean-Up. Charlie has big plans for that property, so we’re on the lookout for another place in the neighborhood to hold our next sale…got any ideas?

JD Camp, our recycling guru, once again brought home

the bacon -- he and his merry band of volunteers raised $1,260 for VCPA from the City’s recycling program.

I’d like to extend my thanks to the many volunteers who make all of these events possible: their dedication and hard work provides VPCA with the funds to improve our neighborhood. As one hard-working member put it, “we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t have a good time!” If YOU would like to come out to have some fun, meet your neigh-bors and volunteer for our events, or would like to serve on a committee of interest to you, we’d love to have you.

Our membership committee is off to a good start for

2012. If you haven’t renewed your membership, please take the time to do it ASAP – membership is valid for the calendar year, so you’re doing yourself out of time if you delay. If you aren’t a member...well, what are you waiting for? There’s an application form on Page 3.

I’d like to give extra thanks to these generous members who added something extra with their membership dues this year for our Capital Improvement Fund (in no particular or-der, and my apologies if I’ve misspelled your name):

The Recycle Bin: Celebrate Earth Day EVERY Day

By JD Camp and Lindsay Koehler

Each month we detail one recycling topic; if it’s news to you, please share the info with your friends and neighbors! If you have a pesky recycling question, please send it to [email protected] and be sure to tell us your name.

Earth Day is on April 22 (though many local celebra-tions and events will take place on Saturday, the 21st) – so in the spirit of responsible stewardship, here are 10 tips for lessening your impact on the planet we share:

1. Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs or LEDs – you’ll save up to 75% on power

2. Don’t let water run while you brush your teeth or wash your hands

3. Check your car’s tire pressure: underinfl ated tires de-crease fuel economy, as well as increasing tire wear

4. Wash your clothes in cold water; consider turning down the setting on your hot water heater, as well

5. Turn off lights and fans when you’re not in the room; unplug appliances when not using them (anything with an LED clock uses juice)

6. Drive smarter. Slow down: 60 miles per hour instead of 70 mph will save up to 4 miles per gallon. Accel-erating and braking too hard reduces your fuel econo-my, so take it easy out there.

7. Remember to bring reusable shopping bags when you do errands

8. Recycle electronics instead of tossing them in the trash; local group ARC Broward can help: http://arc-browarderecycling.com/

9. Leave your car at home: bike, walk, or jog and you’ll burn calories, save money, AND reduce emissions! (Trifecta!) If you must drive, consider carpooling.

10. Get an FPL energy survey to be sure your house is not draining your wallet: http://www.fpl.com/residential/energy_saving/programs/ohes.shtml

Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Downtown Fort Lauderdale has these folks to thank for the

convenience they provide, helping to make the city a tastier, more

efficient place. So the next time someone delivers your meal, be sure

to return the smile.

DOWNTOWN DELIVERED

For more information email us at: [email protected] or call: 954.463.6574

It’s 9:30 am. Your stomach growls but you’re too swamped with work to venture

out or it’s raining cats and dogs, so you call up your favorite lunch spot and order

delivery. Chances are, you’ll be met with one of the deliverers below. I met up

with them recently to find out what it’s like delivering to downtown’s hungry

customers…

Howard Kaplan (pictured left) has been working at The Salad Bowl for six years

now and has been in the delivery business for eleven. How do you get around?

“I bike or walk.” What happens if it rains? “Just like the Post Office—I deliver

through rain or sleet or snow! Look at all these umbrellas I have,” he pointed.

“People are very friendly—you find out about the leak in the closet, the grand-

children in New York…” What do you like most about your job? “The people I work

for. There’s a lot of honesty, integrity, and good food at The Salad Bowl. The

owners are the finest people.” The Salad Bowl is located at 100 E Broward Blvd

in Fort Lauderdale; (954) 828-9208.

Nilson Ruiz (pictured left) has worked at Café Verdi for four years and delivers

food by bicycle and car for farther deliveries. What do you like best about what you

do? “When I deliver customers’ food early, it makes them happy. I like people to

be happy and it makes me feel good about bringing their food.” Café Verdi is

located at 100 E Broward Blvd in Fort Lauderdale; (954) 522-1230.

Joe Monaco (pictured left) started working at CJ’s Café on Las Olas a year and a

half ago. Would the Wave Streetcar help with your delivery service? “Definitely. It

would help with a lot of things.” What’s the best part about what you do? “Meeting

new people—I’m happy to put a smile on the customers’ faces. I understand that

the economy has put a strain on everyone. I am very appreciative of CJ’s Café

and the patrons for each day that I can continue to provide for my family.” CJ’s

Café on Las Olas is located at 200 E Las Olas Blvd # 110 in Fort Lauderdale;

(954) 764-4047.

AIN’T THAT JUST DUCKY!Ducks were wild until they were domesticated in China

many hundreds of years ago.Ducks keep clean by preening themselves with their

beaks, which they do often. They also line their nests with feathers plucked from their chest.

Ducks’ feathers are waterproof. There is a special gland that produces oil near the tail that spreads and covers the outer coat of feathers. Beneath this waterproof layer are fl uffy, soft feathers to keep the duck warm.

Ducks’ feet have no nerves or blood vessels; this means ducks never feel the cold, even if they swim in chilly water.

Ducks can live from 2-12 years, depending on the spe-cies.

A duck’s quack has no echo. Huh! (Huh!) (Huh!)

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROWThe average lifespan for a strand of hair is fi ve and a

half years.Next to bone marrow, hair is the fastest growing tissue

in the human body. The lifespan of an eyelash is approximately 150 days.A survey done by Clairol ten years ago said that 46% of

men stated that it was okay to color their hair; now 66% of men admit to coloring their hair.

On average, a man spends about fi ve months of his life shaving. What a waste of time to look pretty…maybe.

A cowlick is caused by hair growing in a spiral pattern: this causes the hair to stand up straight or grow on an angle. So now you know!

What’s Happening Around Saint Anthony Catholic School

Our school was closed from April 4th through 13th for Easter break. We returned to a very busy April! The annu-al Art Show took place our fi rst week back. Our students’ spectacular artwork was enjoyed by all of the student body and parents who were able to stop by. The Art Show is a great experience, and the students take so much pride in their work. Thank you to Mrs. Wichmann for her efforts.

The following week, our Drama Club presented their spring productions, “Thunder Mountain” and “School Days Plays,” both performed throughout the week in the school clubroom. Our fantastic students played to record crowds! Much thanks to Mr. Haynes for his work with our Drama Club.

On April 26th, Saint Anthony’s annual Gentlemen’s Din-ner took place at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66, honoring Tom Shea, CEO of Right Management – FL/Caribbean. Thanks to all attendees.

VSY – Making a World of Difference

Each school year, we have a theme at Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School; this year’s theme is “Making a World of Difference.” We are striving, through high aca-demic standards and through the teaching of our new Life Skills curriculum, to ensure that our children make the world a better place.

We couldn’t be more proud of our VSY students and their families, because they ARE truly making a difference. For example, in just one week’s time in February, our stu-dents donated approximately 1,500 pairs of shoes to an or-ganization called Soles 4 Souls, a charity that recycles used shoes for people in need. We needed a moving truck to load the mountain of shoes that were brought in!

The students were also busy collecting supplies and do-nations for the “VSY Loves Our Troops” project, with sup-plies given to the non-profi t organization America’s Moms for Soldiers.

Our Neighborhood Schools

Showcase Home of the Month: 315 NE 14th Avenue

By Elena Kirsch

If you were in the neighborhood in December of 2004, you may have seen this home when owners Kathleen and John Schobel opened its doors for the Victoria Park Home Tour. After the purchase of adjoining land, Kathleen and John have since enhanced the presence of the unique property, adding a detached two-car garage, guest room and full bath.

Mimicking the architecture, roof pitch, and color of the main home, the new structure lines up visually, unifying the spaces when viewed from the driveway of the main home. From the street it stands on its own, exuding ultra cottage charm and no visible sign of the two car garage door that waits beyond the gate as you follow the Chicago brick-paved driveway.

Cottage charm, harmonious landscaping, inspiring paint colors of contrasting periwin-kle blue with white trim earn this home a nod for exceptional curbside appeal. And if that isn’t enough, the home also won an award, placing fi rst in the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 2009 Com-munity Appearance Awards for outstanding achievement under 3,500 square feet. Way to go, Kathleen and John!

What a Day! VPCA Spring Clean-Up

a SuccessBy Lindsay Koehler

The workday started early on Saturday, March 10th for the crew that made our community yard sale/recycling event fundraiser happen.

Thanks to Charlie Ladd for loaning us the prime real estate. Thanks to Myrna Pototsky for driving JD all over creation. Thanks to Vicki Eckels and Ed Strobel of Sun-shine Solar Services and the FLPD for educating us all. Thanks to those who rented booth space, tables and tents. Thanks to the neighbor who loaned us more tables. Thanks to those who donated their unwanted treasures to the VPCA so we could sell them. Thanks to all who donated food for The Pantry of Broward, eyeglasses for The Lions Club, and electronics for ARC Broward. Thanks to the shoppers, who came out in force! Our proceeds go to the VPCA, Inc., to keep our neighborhood strong.

When it seemed like everything that was going to sell had sold, we called Faith Farm (we had previously arranged that they would pick up whatever remained). They came over ASAP and courteously loaded everything up and took it away. What a tremendous feeling to know that all the donations went to good use! Nothing wasted.

And fi nally, a sincere thanks to all those who volunteered their own precious time to make this event a success – which it would NOT have been, without you:

Pet of the Month: Jasmine the Cat

By Colleen Robb

At Abandoned Pet Rescue, Broward County’s largest no-kill animal shelter, we believe every animal should have the opportunity to enjoy a long, happy life. We’d like to introduce you to one of our very special cats, Jasmine.

Jasmine was a nursing momma cat left at APR’s door with her kittens and 15 other cats and kittens in fi lthy carriers. She is a little shy until she gets to know you. (One of her kittens, Heather, is still looking for a forever home as well.) They are fi ne with other cats, but would love to have a home where they can have one-on-one attention with people to gain trust in us again. They have not been around dogs, so they’d be happier in a feline-only home. Come by to meet these girls in the kitten room any day between 12-5 p.m.

Abandoned Pet Rescue is located at 1137 NE 9th Av-enue in Fort Lauderdale. Contact them at 954-728-9010 • www.abandonedpetrescue.org
