Course ObjectiveThis intensive three-day course in forensic psychiatry will provide an in depth review of selected topics and relevant landmark cases. Basic concepts will be reviewed along with the latest case law. At the conclusion of the course, participants will: (1) have a good understanding of the major topics in forensic psychiatry; (2) understand the landmark mental health law cases; (3) be able to write more effective forensic reports; (4) be able to assess competency and sanity in defendants; and (5) be able to detect malingered mental illness.
FormatTeaching methods will include lectures, report writing exercises, discussion of videotaped vignettes and informal interaction wth faculty. A comprehensive 1,100-page syllabus with lecture outlines, 100 case summaries, report samples, reading lists, and over 700 self-assessment questions will be accessible on-line to all participants at no extra cost.
Continuing EducationThe American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law designates this live activity for a maximum of 21 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Target AudienceThis program is designed for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and attorneys interested in mental health law. The Course will be useful for those desiring a comprehensive overview and update in forensic psychiatry, as well as those preparing for forensic examinations.
AccommodationsThe Review Course will be held at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower. Registrants may make their room reservations through the AAPL website: http://www.AAPL.org. Reservations are subject to availability. AAPL room rates can only be guaranteed until September 24, 2016. Rates for single or double are $179 plus 16.5% tax and $219 plus tax for rooms in the Executive Tower. Check-in time is 4:00 p.m. and check-out time is 12:00 p.m. Hilton Portland & Executive Tower is approximately 10 miles (30 minutes) from the Portland International Airport (PDX). The hotel does not provide shuttle service but taxi, Super Shuttle and light rail services are available at the airport.
Cancellation PolicyFor cancellations received in writing up to one week before the course begins, a $60 processing fee will be charged. Thereafter, there will be no refund.
