AAP supports the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative

(From left to right) AAP president Augusto Lagman, Michelle Yeoh, AIP Foundation president Greig Craft, Oleg Tonkonojenkov of ADB, AIP Foundation executive director Mirjam Sidik and AAP director Aida Sevilla-Mendoza were impressed by the performance of the students during the helmet fashion show.

To address the growing number of motorcycle-related accidents involving children in many Asian countries, Federation Internaionale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation, the Asian Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) launched the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative (GHVI) during the Helmets for Kids (HFK) ceremony organized by AAP at the Department of Education (DepEd) in Pasig on May 26, 2010.

The HKF ceremony was led by Michelle Yeoh, the star of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and former James Bond girl who is now the Make Roads Safe Global Ambassador of the FIA Foundation. Ms Yeoh distributed “tropical helmets” to elementary students from Pasig, Mandaluyong and Quezon City.

The “tropical helmet” produced by the Protec Helmet Factory in Vietnam is designed to make wearing helmets more comfortable for Asians. The Tropical Helmet undergoes a series of tests including crash, puncture, velocity drop, and testing of the chin straps and buckles to ensure that it meets Vietnamese,

European and Australian standards.

AAP Membership Services Update

Revised policy on the 7 day ERS hiatus Effective July 1, 2010, newly registered AAP members can

avail of their membership entitlements only after seven (7) days from the date of approval of their membership. The seven day hiatus, however, will be waived in case of an emergency roadside situation.

LTO motor vehicle registration reminder thru DRIVE newsletter

It has become obvious by the many complaints we receive that we can no longer rely on the postal service to deliver our motor vehicle registration reminders on time, if at all. The board of directors has therefore decided to save P200,000 plus annually in addition to contributing to environmental care by maintaining a renewal reminder box in our DRIVE newsletter and in the home page of our website www.aap.org.ph in lieu of mailed reminders. AAP enjoins club members to keep abreast of the latest happenings in the Association by visiting our website regularly.

Club members who would like to receive LTO motor vehicle registration reminders thru SMS should notify the AAP Membership Department via phone (723-0808 local 818 or 819 and 09178378489) or email ([email protected]).

As part of its public service program, AAP will give senior citizens a 20 percent discount on towing service at the country’s major expressways including the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), the Skyway and ground-level expressway from Magallanes to Alabang, and the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). AAP, through its wholly owned subsidiary AAPLINGKOD, is the exclusive Emergency Roadside

Service (ERS) provider at the above expressways.

Only senior citizens who are not AAP members may avail of the discount since AAP members are entitled to free towing service as one of their membership benefits. The senior citizen must be the registered owner of the motor vehicle and present during the towing intervention. The discount applies to Class 1 vehicles only. Implementation began on June 12, 2010 to coincide with

the celebrat ion of the 112 t h Independence Day Anniversary of the Philippines.

AAPLINGKOD, is also the ERS provider for club members. The AAPLINGKOD ERS team works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call our ERS hotlines - 723-0808, 726 -0191, 0917-8480191, 0922-8601603, 0917-8126000 or 0918-8126000 - for emergency roadside service.

PUV drivers training in DVD to be released soon The Automobile Association Philippines (AAP), Toyota Motor

Philippines Corp. (TMP), the University of the Philippines

National Center for Transportation Studies (UP-NCTS) and the

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)

recognize the importance of education in molding professional

and responsible public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. Education is

one of the three E’s in traffic management; the other two are

Enforcement and Engineering.

Since 2007, AAP, TMP, UP-NCTS and LTFRB have been

working together to conduct a three-day training course for

taxi, jeepney and bus drivers to enhance their driving skills and

safety consciousness with the aim of reducing the number of

road crashes.

To educate more PUV drivers, the three-day training course

is being made into a DVD series with the assistance of the UP

College of Mass Communications. On May 24, 2010, TMP

donated P1.5M to its UP Traffic Safety Model Zone partnership

project with AAP, LTFRB and the UP - NCTS to fund the

production of the training modules The DVD will have eight

modules in Pilipino with English subtitles and will cover basic

driving skills, traffic rules and regulations, passenger and

customer relations, safe and ethical driving and emergency

procedures. The first three modules will be launched soon. The

road safety partners believe that the supplementary video

materials will make the training program more effective.

Aside from the DVD training modules, TMP also funded the

renovation of the Toyota Training Room at the UP-NCTS which

has complete audio-visual equipment, a road safety database

server, and other facilities for road safety-related programs.

Since its inauguration in April 2008, the Toyota Training Room

has served as the venue of numerous PUV drivers training

sessions and other road safety events.

The 2010 Philippine Touring Car Championship (PTCC) and 2010 Philippine Production Car Championship (PPCC) organized and promoted by Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) is set to begin its first leg on July 31 – August 1, 2010, venue to be announced.

During a meeting held last May 13 at the AAP Lecture Room, the drivers and organizers agreed to make it a Three – Weekend series instead of a Four – Weekend series like last year with four races per weekend for the 2010 season.

The Three – Weekend races will be conducted at the three circuit tracks in the country: the Subic International raceway, Batangas Racing Circuit and the newly constructed C lark Internat iona l Speedway.

The meeting also resulted in some rule changes in the PTCC (Group 1) in transition for the 2011 season to

accommodate newer and higher horsepower cars that will run in a specific class, particularly accommodating 2.0 and 1.8 liter vehicles.

“It’s a great way to modify the rules especially in the PTCC to allow new cars and perhaps the car manufacturers to come in and compete in the only national series for circuit racing,” AAP Motorsports Committee Chair Mandy Eduque said.

In addition, all competitors will have to comply with all the safety regulations that the AAP will implement for this year’s series, such as driver’s over-all; homologated race suit, gloves, shoes, helmets, seats, harness and safety features in a race car such as roll cage, fire extinguisher and emergency kill switch.

2009 Touring Car Driver of the Year Don Pastor will defend his title against tough drivers such as his own brother,

Enzo Pastor Dennis Uy, William Tan and Touring Car 12- time Driver of the Year Jody Coseteng, who is making a comeback.

In the Production Class, 2009 PPCC (Group 3) Over-all Champion Doby Atilano will compete against the “Big Boys” of PTCC (Group 1) and his arch rival in the Group 3 division, Jeff Borja. The latter will show his skills in the highest class of the Touring Car.

Novice drivers Arnel Carlos and Dianne Montecillo, the 2010 series’ only female driver and Stefan Ramirez, the son of racing guru Kookie Ramirez will also join the roster of drivers.

For more information, please call Mark Desales of AAP Motorsports at 723-0808 loc 832.
