Round 15 Results & Match Reports

U12 Jackettes: St Bedes/Mentone Tigers 7.4 (46) def Ajax 6.4 (40)

Goals: L Davies 2, Silver 2, Fanarof, T Szwarcberg

Best: Bagle-Zevin, L Davies, Fanarof, M Roth, Silver, T Szwarcberg

Coach’s Match report: It was a great finish to the season by the Jackettes on Sunday the 5th of August. With only a few girls missing and coach Braham enjoying himself at the snow the girls displayed a tremendous amounts of effort and determination.

Pumping the girls up prior to the match they wanted their final game to be a victory, however were just as gallant in their defeat. They should be so proud of themselves to display the talent that they have and walk away from not only the game but also the season with pride.

The girls continued to fight throughout the afternoon however time ran away from them. With Maddy trying to save time by having a shot at goal after the siren, made the score line closer to show how the contest was throughout the game.

With season one under their belts the girls should be excited and ready to take on a new season with new challenges. It has truly been a highlight watching how much the girls have developed their skills and become great female footballers.

Great season Jackettes, you should all be very proud of yourselves, as I’m sure your family and friends that have supported you are.

We will see you next season!! GO JACKETTES!!

U12 Jackettes (continued)

Team Manager’s report: This was the final game of the season for the Jackettes and it was played at home. 18 Jackettes ran out onto the oval as Ieva & Cassie were still away, Cara Davies was at Mt Buller for the Jewish Day schools snow sports competition and Allegra was a late withdrawal due to illness. The Jackettes were led out onto the oval by the Captains of the day, Lexie, Charlie & Morgan. Unfortunately Coach Braham was unavailable as he was also up at Mt Buller, so coaching the team was our Assistant Coach, Danielle. The Jackettes won the toss and kicked with the wind and after a few minutes of play had the 1st major on the board with a goal to Lily. From the centre square ball up the Jackettes had their running game going and after some good teamwork saw Romy kick the Jackettes 2nd goal. The team were moving the ball, looking for teammates in better positions and kicking long to take advantage of the wind. Lily kicked her 2nd for the quarter and then Bianca got her name on the scoreboard with her 1st for the day. The end of the 1st quarter saw the Jackettes lead by 1 goal, scores were 4.1.25 to 3.1.19. Coach Danielle praised the girls for their 1st quarter efforts and mentioned to them that as they were kicking into the wind we would need to work hard at the ball, move the ball forward with handballs and to keep the kicks low. Lots of good teamwork took place in the quarter and although the Jackettes were unable to score, they restricted the opposition to 2 goals. At the ½ time break the girls went into the huddle 6 points down, scores Jackettes 4.1.25 to 5.1.31. Whilst enjoying the Vitamin C refreshments provided by the Davies family the girls listened very closely to the instructions given by the coaching staff, Danielle, Sonney & Hillel. Their instructions were to use the wind to their advantage, kick long, run to a better position and play on at every possible opportunity. The girls were playing good attacking football and a good passage of play in the forward pocket saw Cheryl win the hard ball, then fire off a handball to Tania who was in a better position and she kicked truly for a big 6 pointer. In the opposite forward pocket Bianca trapped the ball, danced around an opponent, steadied and kicked her 2nd for the match. Later in the quarter Maddy took a mark right next to the behind post. Being on a very difficult angle she lined up the goals with a banana kick and went very close to putting it through, unfortunately it went through for a minor score. The Jackettes defence put lots of pressure on the opposition during the quarter and prevented the opposition from scoring any majors. At ¾ time the Jackettes were up by 1 goal, 6.3.39 to 5.3.33. We were in for an exciting last quarter and at the previous breaks it was only a goal difference, Jackettes up in the 1st quarter, down at ½ time and up at ¾ time. The last quarter saw both teams play great football, the Jackettes linking up with lots of good passages of play. The opposition kicked a major then quickly followed this up with a point so were 7 points up with 2 minutes to go. The Jackettes “never say die” attitude and commitment saw them pump the ball long into the forward line. They attacked the goal and managed to score a point so were 6 points down. It was set for a nail biting finish but time ran out with the Jackettes going down by 1 goal. Final scores Jackettes 6.4.40 to St Bedes/Mentone Tigers 7.4.46.

U12 Jackettes (continued) Season’s Statistics The Jackettes had a very successful inaugural season. They played 7 matches for 3 wins/4 losses (2 of the losses were 2 & 6 points respectively). In the 7 matches they scored a total of 48 goals 46 behinds (334 points) and allowed the opposition to score 28 goals 35 behinds (203 points). 16 Jackettes scored goals in the 7 matches played. The season’s goal-kickers were: Bianca – 8 goals in total Tania – 7 Jessica – 6 Lily – 6 Cara – 5 Romy – 3 Allegra – 2 Timnah – 2 Zoe – 2 Charlie – 1 Eliza – 1 Ieva – 1 Lexie – 1 Maddy – 1 Morgan – 1 Tali – 1 Girls, everyone associated with the team were very proud of your achievements this year. We all hope you enjoyed the season, and being the inaugural Jackettes team you are now part of the history of the AJFC. To all the parents, grandparents and supporters, thank you for the wonderful support throughout the year. It was a pleasure having all of you associated with the team. Bring on season 2013!!!.

U15 Jets: Murrumbeena Maroon 5.10 (40) def Ajax 5.7 (37) Goals: Krongold 3, New 2 Best: Davis, Gaddie, Kalmus, Mihalovich, Shatter, Wolf

Match report: SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CLOSE. You guys did not deserve to lose today. Probably the most committed and even display across the board this season. When Jason was working out the best 6 players we had it down to 12 contenders. Kronos and New up forward were always a threat. The backline of Jordan, Max. Phil and Julza again held tight only letting through 5 goals. Shatter was a powerhouse all day and Kalmus, Nochum, Mordy, Rafi and Kiffer pumped the ball through the midfield consistently. You again displayed the spirit and determination that we love to see. Congratulations on what has been a very enjoyable season that cannot be measured by wins and loses. See you all at presentation night.

U16: Dingley 19.16 (130) def Ajax 13.2 (80)

Goals: De Winter 3, Schwartz 3, Stock 3, Menahem, Schnider, Weeden, Zeldin

Best: De Winter, Herszberg, Schwartz, Stock, Weeden, Wise

Match report: Was another tough day for the jackas and not ideal as preparation for finals this week. Again there were 7-8 key outs and we relied on the support from a few U14s to fill the side. Despite a very strong start from Ajax, the 2nd and 3rd term saw the ladder leaders, Dingley, pull away to huge lead. To their credit, ajax won the last quarter with a really gutsy effort. That, together with the inclusion of a number of players will give the boys a lot of confidence going into finals next week.

Match report: Captains for the game, Grunfeld & Rosenwax. Congratulation’s to Reuben Grunfeld & Adrian Rosenwax for their 50th game. (officially last week) Big game in tough conditions with a strong wind. Stars played the 1 & 2nd quarters with strength & big effort. With the score at half time only a point the difference Stars were in it looking for a win. 3rd quarter did not go our way, but we still had a fighting chance. Last quarter we had the wind with many scoring opportunities but could not get the goals needed to come home with a win. Well done to all the players. Stars 2012 season will be remembered for years to come for the 10 consecutive winning streak during the home & away matches

1st Semi Final

U12 Jets: Beaumaris 4.10 (34) def Ajax 2.2 (14)

Goals: Jenshel,Tusia

Best: Efron, Gold, Hymans, Jenshel, Moshinsky, Webb

Match report: None reported.

2nd Semi Final

U13 Comets: St Kilda City 3.6 (24) def Ajax 2.9 (21)

Goals: Liberman, Rosham

Best: J. Bassat, M. Bassat, Beaconsfield, Berlinski, Goldfinger, Syber

Match report: We played a great match today in very windy conditions. Our running, tackling and attack on the footy in the first half was fantastic. We dropped off a little in the third quarter but kept the opposition to one behind.

We stepped it up again the last quarter and drew out to an 8 point lead. We did everything to win and it was only a huge goal after the siren that beat us. The boys should keep their heads up high as they played a terrific game.

Our focus now is to win next week, use our second chance and grab a spot in the Grand Final.

Elimination Final

U17’s: Ajax 11.18 (84) def St Bedes/Mentone Tigers Blue 9.8 (62)

Goals: Rechtman 3, Rotenberg 2, Saltzman 2, Berkovitz, Paltiel, Thurin, Yarrow.

Best: Jones, Kedar, Rotenberg, Shapiro, Slade, Thurin

Match report: Finals have arrived and the U17 Jackas confronted a tough opponent and gale-force winds to grind out a comfortable win. After wasting opportunities in the 1st quarter with the wind, with only 4 majors of 12 scoring shots, the Jackas held on to a 2-goal lead at the long break. The “premiership quarter” saw the boys pile on 6 goals taking advantage of some undisciplined play by their opponents. The 8-goal three-quarter time lead proved sufficient as they held on to register a good win. The U17 Jackas will have to maintain their best form to progress beyond the 1st Semi Final in a demanding 4-week Division 1 finals’ series.

“Q & A’s” with the founding member of the AJFC – Graeme Le Bransky

1. Welcome Graeme to the AJAX Football Club Luncheon celebrating the 40th year anniversary of the club. Can you tell me a bit about you? I played the 1st ever AJAX Senior match played and played over 80 games with the club. As it was the 1st ever Jewish team it comprised of many players from various backgrounds. One important player (Ian Symon) was unable to play as he was required to play VFL football with the St Kilda Football club. I also played State Football and swam for AJAX in the Brisbane Carnival. 2. As the founding member of the AJFC, how did you first become involved in the club? I formed the club with David Burstin. We brought along friends who were living next door or living down the street, or over the back fences. In 1971 David suggested we become part of the AJAX umbrella and the rest is history. 3. You are a club stalwart of this great club. What are some of the roles you have performed over the years? I was part of the inaugural committee and also head coach for 8 years. I taught the kids how to plan a rugged sport combined with good sportsmanship. I placed importance of them having fun. 4. You coached many Junior age groups over the years. Tell me about them? In my 1st year I coached all the 4 junior sides. I remember coaching 1 side, then as soon as that match finished I raced off to coach the 2nd side etc. 5. And some of the memorable moments from your coaching career are? We won numerous premierships. One of the memorable experience of coaching was my U15’s who NEVER lost a match in 2 ½ seasons playing in the “Spartan” league. I coached many kids who at the start of their careers were uncordinated but developed into top quality footballers. An example was Gavin Sekler who won the league’s best and fairest award. (editors comments: In 1977 Ruckman Gavin Sekler won the competition best & fairest in the Under 15’s by a margin of over 10 votes). 6. You have been awarded life membership of the AJFC. How did it feel to be recognized as a life member? The award presentation night was held at the National Theatre in St Kilda and when they announced me as a recipient of life membership I was overcome, I couldn’t speak. I managed to say a few words that were greeted with outstanding applause. (editors comments: The 2012 AJFC award presentation night will be held at the same place, The National Theatre, Cnr Barkly & Carlisle Streets, St Kilda on Sunday 9 September 2012 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm).

Page 14: AAJJJAAXXX U FFFCC JJJUUNNNIIIOOORRSSS · 2020. 2. 11. · Best: Chrapot, Grunfeld, Krowitz, Machlin, Micmacher, Pacanowski Match report: Captains for the game, Grunfeld & Rosenwax.

7. The club has seen a growth in numbers and teams each year. What do you think are the reasons behind this? A lot more kids through their friends want to be part of playing football for a Jewish club. It is the cornerstone of our Jewish heritage. They all play “kick-to kick” together so they all go down to training and train with their friends, then play football together in a team environment. 8. At the end of the season the “Graeme Le Bransky Trophy” is awarded to the Club Champion. At any sporting club this is a prestigious award. For all the junior players at the club what advice do you offer them to achieve being named as a Club Champion?

1. Listen to their coach. 2. Practice your skills. 3. Develop a “can do” attitude instead of a “I hope I can do” attitude. 4. Think as well as acting instinctly.

(editors comments: Very sound advice from Graeme. The award honours him being a founding member of our club, a coach of many age groups for many years and a great club stalwart).

9. You must be proud to see your son Anthony following your footsteps by coaching a junior team (u15 Comets). What changes have you noticed from the years when you coached to the present days of coaching? Anthony applies technical strategies because of the intellectual development of the kids. In my coaching days this was not appropriate. 10. Finally, I believe you recently coached the Caulfield Grammar’s lawn bowls team to victory in the Bowls Victoria School Pennant. Which sport was harder to coach, football or lawn bowls? My school’s lawn bowls club squad has won the State Titles 8 times in the last 10 years. Coaching football teams is probably harder to coach because there are more players in the one activity that may need adjustment. In football there are a diversity of skills, whereas, in lawn bowls there are less players and principally just one set of skills.

Thank you for your time in answering the questions. You are a great icon and stalwart of this great club. Enjoy the luncheon.

“Q & A’s with your coach”

with your This week’s “lucky” coach selected to be “grilled” and to share their answers with the AJAX JFC community is Ash Shenker. 1. What team do you co –coach? U11 Stars (co-coach with Jordy Rubinstein).

(Jordy was grilled last week and his Q & A’s can be read in the round 14 wrap) 2. Do you have a nickname? Shenks. 3. How long have you been coaching with AJAX? This is my 1st year. 4. In the Home & Away season your U11 Stars won 11 games, lost 2, drew 1, won 10 consecutive matches and finished the home and away season in 3rd position of the ladder. Based on these results your team must be doing the right things each week. What do you do to “keep them up and running” and “focused” each week”? 1. At the start of the year we did lots of tackling work at training, this is now paying dividends. 2. The boys enjoy a bit of freedom. We play them in different positions, give them a range of roles to perform and this allows them to become flexible out on the field. 5. What has been your most memorable coaching moment(s)? Our night match win against Mordialloc-Braeside. In the last quarter we were in front, they were in front, we snatched back the lead, and then they did. With 2 minutes to go we were down by 4 points before Adrian Rosenwax took a mark and kicked the goal, Jackas up by 2 points. The ball was in Mordi- Braeside’s forward line when the siren rang, victory by 2 points.

6. I hear you have played a bit of footy with AJAX. Tell me a bit about your career? Started my Junior career in the U9’s and played right through to the U17’s, playing over 100 games. Was vice captain for 4 odd years in the junior teams. I also was fortunate to play in 2 premiership teams (U14’s & U16”s).

Page 17: AAJJJAAXXX U FFFCC JJJUUNNNIIIOOORRSSS · 2020. 2. 11. · Best: Chrapot, Grunfeld, Krowitz, Machlin, Micmacher, Pacanowski Match report: Captains for the game, Grunfeld & Rosenwax.

7. And the best moment(s) you experienced whilst playing were? 1. Being part of the U14 team when we won the flag. Half way through the season with only 6 matches remaining I broke my wrist. I had to have a plaster cast fitted and the Doctor said I’ll be out of action for 8 weeks. I was shattered as it appeared I wouldn’t be available to participate in the finals. On the Thursday night before the grand final I had the cast removed and convinced the coach to select me in the team. I was selected and played the last 5 minutes of the match in the winning team. 2. Whilst playing from U9’s to U15’s I had only managed to kick 4 odd goals. In one of the U16’s match against St Bede’s I played an awesome match kicking 8 goals. We won that match by 200+ points. 8. I heard a whisper you won some awards throughout your involvement with Ajax. What were they? 1. In my last year of Junior football in 2010, I together with my parents (Debbie & Jeff) was awarded the “Eddie Malinek” Memorial Trophy recognizing Outstanding Commitment to the club. 2. Last year playing in the U19’s for the AJAX senior club I was awarded the “coaches” award. (editors comments: This award is Dedicated to the memory of Eddie Malinek who tragically passed away in 2005. Eddie played over 100 games as a junior and later came back as an assistant coach for U9-U13 teams).

9. Your favorite saying to your team is? “Focus & Attitude”, that’s what makes a good side. 10. Which AFL Team do you support? The Mighty Blues. 11. In 10 words or less finish this sentence. If I was the coach of the Mighty Blues I would ……. Get rid of “Gibbsy”. (editors comments: That’s a bit harsh “Ash”, wanting to get rid of our 2006 No 1 draft pick).

12. Outside of football you are the Sports Editor for the AJN. As the Publicity Officer for the AJFC, I prepare lots of articles for the club ranging from the team I manage (the inaugural girl’s team, the Jackettes) to other achievements that have occurred throughout the season. As only a few of my articles have been published, isn’t it you (as the sports editor) who “makes the decision” as to whether they are published? I have a say in the process. As a lot of articles come in I work very closely with one of our Journalist’s deciding on what to or what not to publish. The hardest decision is to “prioritize” all the articles. I would love to publish every article but unfortunately I cannot. (editors comments: Come on Ash, just ensure all the AJFC articles are published. Maybe Cook will have to spell this out in your contract next year, no AJFC articles published = no coaching remuneration!!). 13. For the articles that are published, they NEVER make the front page. Why? There are more important Jewish events and news taking place!! Thank you for your time in answering these “grilling” questions.

AJAX FC NEWSLETTER ROUND 14 V UNIVERSITY BLACKS

teskacarson DARK DAY AS BLACKS

SMASH JACKAS

THE AJAX Football Club was far from impressive in its 127-point defeat at the hands of ladder-leaders University Blacks, with the side going down 27.16 (178) to 8.3 (51) at Melbourne University Oval on the weekend. The Jackas were totally overrun in the one-sided affair, with David Fayman providing the only shining light with a four-goal performance.

The visitors were able to match it with the premiership-favourites early on, with Geoff Measey and Evgeni Routman keeping the Jackas in touch, before the home side kicked the last three goals of the term to lead by 21 points at the first break. AJAX came out with great intensity in the second quarter, getting on top in the midfield and matching the Blacks’ two majors with two goals to Fayman and one to Jake Lew.

But it then went horribly wrong for the Jackas, as the hosts piled on six goals to end the first half with a 55-point advantage. It went from bad to worse after the long break, the Blacks kicking another four unanswered goals before the Jackas could finally find the big sticks. Eventually, Measey and Fayman were able to bring an end to the 10-goal run, but the Blacks then managed to

slot another four goals to one before the final break.

The Jackas’ last quarter capped off a terrible day at the office, kicking just one behind to the the home team’s five to

go down in one of their worst performances for the year. The Reserves suffered the same fate as the seniors, losing 18.14 (122) to 3.3 (21).

OFFICIAL ANNOUCEMENT

AJAX SENIORS COMES HOME

Forty years of AJAX junior Australian Rules football will be celebrated at Princes Park on Saturday, 1 September 2012,at a Community Day to be staged by the AJAX football club.

The day will feature an Auskick clinic, and a junior grid match during the break between the main games- the AJAX seniors and reserves teams playing their final games of the 2012 season against Beaumaris. It will mark the first time the AJAX senior sides will have played senior home games in the heart of Glen Eira, at the same home ground of the junior teams .

The AJAX Junior Football Club was founded in 1972 and in the 40 years since, thousands of Jewish boys and many girls have worn the AJAX jumper and represented their community while playing Australia's national sport-Aussie Rules Footy.. AJAX Football Club thanks the Council of Glen Eira for granting permission for the senior club to play the matches at Princes Park on 1/9. The Councillors felt the local community deserved to see the Jewish community's football senior teams play their footy at the same home ground as the AJAX juniors, within the Municipality of Glen Eira- in which the largest % of Jewish residents live. This will be a true community day and will allow the senior teams to promote and showcase themselves and to encourage junior players to continue their football with AJAX. The pathway between the two levels of footy must remain seamless and continuous.

The Community Day football will also allow members of the local Jewish community who do not drive on Shabbat, or find Albert Park too far,but are still passionate about their footy, and who rarely get the opportunity to support their Jewish footy club, to walk to Princes Park and enjoy a game of high-level amateur VAFA football.

The AJAX Football Club looks forward to showcasing its senior players in front of a large crowd at one of the best suburban football venues in Melbourne.

The Auskick clinic is planned to be held on the main oval at Princess Park in the morning. Full details will be disclosed in coming weeks. The reserves game will start at 11.20am, with the senior match at 2pm.There will also be a grid match between 2 junior teams during the interval of the main senior games.

Admission is free.ALL are welcome.
