Adopt-A-Family was born to addressa need. In 1983, Lucy Runyon, JayneEllison and Kay Mansolill were threePalm Beach County women who sawtoo many new, poor olks who weretemporarily down on their luck and toomodest to ask or help, according toLucy Runyon.

The frst amily they helped wasmentioned on a local radio station. Aamily o our had moved rom Texas insearch o a brighter uture or the atherin the computer feld. They had packedup the amily and their modest savings, and just beore reaching Florida, one othe children became quite ill, requiring

hospitalization. With all the savingsgoing to hospital bills, the amily wasdestitute. When they arrived in WestPalm Beach with no place to live, theymoved under the Royal Palm Bridge. When they heard the story, the ladiespromptly sought the amily out, andmoved them into a motel. Runyon, anemployee at the First National Bank inPalm Beach, conerred with their Boardo Directors, and called her lawyer.Twelve hours later, the frst Board o

Directors or Adopt-A-Family o thePalm Beaches was born. The bankadopted the amily, the ladies helpedthem fnd an apartment and two weekslater, got the ather a job. Their initialsuccess was contagious, and ueled theienergy to help more amilies. Mansolill,Ellison and Runyon developed acatalog o amilies to adopt, andshopped local CEOs. With persistenceand determination, 50 amilies wereadopted in the frst year. Their salespitch was that keeping donated

dollars at home and investing in yourcommunity is a solid, smart businessdecision.

Thirty years later, we have stayed trueto the dream o our ounders, and overthe years have helped more than 39,000amilies attain sel-sufciency.
