RETHINKING VISION IN THE WORKPLACE
Ed De Gennaro, MEd, ABOM
Despite all the efforts being made within the op cal community, millions of Americans—even those who have vision‐care ben‐
efits—don’t seek rou ne eye examina ons. While the individual is the biggest loser in this Russian roule e scenario, there are
many costs associated with poor vision in the workplace. A recent study has brought these issues to light.
The 2015 annual Employee Percep ons of Vision Benefits survey conducted by an independent research company surveyed
1,000 U.S. residents 18 and older who were employed full or part me and have vision care benefits. The results of the study
are illumina ng, and every eyecare office should take me to understand the report and use its data in promo ng eyecare to
the public.
While 92% of workers felt that the quality of their work was impacted by visual disturbances on‐the‐job, only 13% reported this
fact to their employer, even though 99% of them felt that seeing well was somewhat important, important or very im‐
portant. Employers can’t fix what they don’t know about, right? More than half of those surveyed said they were bothered by
light issues at work. The top five visual disturbances were red eyes; light reflec ng off a computer screen; bright, glaring light;
dry eyes; and headaches that were caused by‐ visual disturbances. Nearly half of those surveyed took breaks to rest their eyes
because they felt hurt or uncomfortable. This is a 45% increase over the last me this study was done in 2011.
Poor vision and a compromised working environment reduces employees’ produc vity, which translates into profit loss for
employers. What’s the answer to this dilemma? Rou ne eyecare and a dialogue between the employee and an experienced
ECP who can make recommenda ons to improve visual comfort and effec veness. Eye doctors and their staff need to ask
ques ons that unearth workplace vision difficul es such as glary computer screens and numbers of hours looking at screens,
intense overhead ligh ng, and blue light. Workers need to be informed about the poten al situa ons that may occur in the
workplace. Another good resource on eye problems in the workplace is The Vision Council’s report on digital eyestrain.

Arizona State Board Of Dispensing Opticians
NEW STATUTE CHANGES EFFECTIVE 7/3/15
Note: Arizona currently has one of the lowest continuing education requirements in the country.
SB 1010 signed by the governor on March 23, 2015 amends A.R.S. §32-1687 B to read: The board shall prescribe by rule the form and content of continuing education for dispensing opticians licensed under this chapter that is designed to educate the licensee in current developments, skills and procedures. Opticians may satisfy this continuing education requirement by home study courses or attending seminars and are not required to join a professional association of dispensing opticians in this state in order to fulfill the requirement. The rules shall establish the number of hours of continuing education required within a three year period in an amount not to exceed twenty-one hours. What this means for opticians is the Board will seek to change A.A.C. R4-20-120 to increase the number of continuing education hours required from 12 hours every three years to 18 hours every three years. To change the Rule, the Board will go through the rule change process by opening a docket with the Governor’s Regulatory Review Counsel (GRRC). A list of proposed rule changes will be published by the Secretary of State. Following a comment period a Final Rule change will be published. Opticians can expect this process to take approximately 7 months. Starting with the 2018 renewals 18 credits will likely be required to renew your optician license.

NATIONAL SUNGLASSES DAY
In an effort to increase the use of UV protective eyewear, The Vision Council has utilized National Sunglasses Day as a launching point for its UV campaign. Through media briefings, social media, and a petition asking consumers pledge to wear sunglasses on June 27th – and encourage others to do the same – The Vision Council garnered over 40 million impressions in one 24-hour period alone, turning National Sunglass Day into a major nation-wide initiative.
AADO receives numerous calls from members and non members alike asking for clarification

2. Three hours in contact lens fitting and dispensing; (NCLE)
3. One hour in state or national opticianry standards.

Are You Good at Herding Cats? Anne Miller
If you could follow around a group of outstanding salespeople and presenters with a camera over a long period of time, you would discover practices common to them all. These skills would likely range from small behaviors, like how they greet someone to broader skills, like how they link fea-tures to value in presentations. But, what would their “herding cats” behaviors be?
This “herding cats” phrase comes from an article by NY Times columnist David Brooks, writing about Doug Lemov, managing director of “Teach Like a Champion.”
“In part," writes Brooks, "Lemov is talking about the skill of ‘herding cats.’ The master of cat herd-ing senses when attention is about to wander, knows how fast to move a diverse group, senses the rhythm between lecturing and class participation, varies the emotional tone. This is a perfor-mance skill that surely is relevant beyond education.”
In Sales, Demos, & Presentations Brooks is right. These sensitivity and situational skills extend way beyond the classroom. They are critical in selling, presenting, marriage, parenting, negotiating, consulting, managing, leading---any interaction where influence and persuasion are involved.
In sales, “herding cats” includes:
• Being really present with, and responsive to, prospects and clients: listening, focus, attention
• Having the courage to ask questions for clarity, understanding, and inconsistencies
• Being sufficiently mindful and flexible to respond to both listener interest and fatigue
• Reading and responding to another person’s time and information preferences, and
• Using the best language that resonates with listeners: specific words, phrases, metaphors, &analogies
Technology makes us more efficient and productive and that is certainly good. It would be hard to find too many people who would want to go back to electric typewriters and white-out . But tech-nology will never replace those invisible “herding cats” skills that build relationships and smooth the way to long-term agreement and business.

The Way I See It...
Can I Get My OD Measurement?
By Mindi Lewis, MA, ABOC, FNAO
Can I get my OD measurement?
A patient enters the optical area and asks, "Can I get a copy of my OD measurement?" I look at them with a confused face and say, "I'm not sure what you are asking for."
Often the conversation begins something like that and boils down to a request for their PD measurement to use for online eyewear ordering. This is obviously a controversial topic among ECPs today. I've read several online blogs among the three O's discussing this hot topic.
I have a theory that many, if not most, intelligent and computer savvy patients are going to try ordering glasses online—at least once. My theory is that it may not be an easy experience or satisfying experience and they will return to working with a professional.
Then the conversation goes, "The PD, or pupiliary distance measurement, is not a part of the routine eye examination. The PD measurement is taken when our licensed Opticians are measuring and fitting you for your new eyewear." This is said as I point to the wall in the office where two or three ABOC certificates are proudly displayed.
As I politely agree to give the patient their PD measurement, which I always write monocular measurements and in .5mm increments. While I'm doing this I take the opportunity to educate them that there are many different parame-ters or aspects of making a pair of glasses and they should make sure they are checked for quality and correctness. I write the PD measurement on a business card and invite them back into our office for their next pair. Often I'll even show them a new frame line or a new piece of equipment or measuring device on their way out the door.
