Anaphylaxis
• A sudden severe allergic reaction
• Recognize the symptoms
Anaphylaxis Symptoms
Mouth itching, swelling of lips and tongue
Throat* itching, tightness, closure, hoarseness
Skin itching, hives, redness, swelling
Gut vomiting, diarrhea, cramps
Lung* shortness of breath, cough, wheeze
Heart* weak pulse, dizziness, passing out
* life-threatening symptoms
Anaphylaxis
• Only a few symptoms may be present
• Some symptoms can be life-threatening, eg. throat, lung, heart
• Act fast! It can be fatal!
Anaphylaxis can be fatal
• Know triggers and avoid them
• Carry Emergency Action Plan
• Carry self-injectable epinephrine at all times
• Inject epinephrine promptly if allergic reaction occurs
• Call 911 or rescue squad immediately
• Train family & friends to help in an emergency
Anaphylaxis can be fatal
• Asthma puts patients at high risk for severe reactions
• Injectable epi is available in four devices- EpiPen Jr 0.15 mg
- EpiPen 0.3 mg
- Twinject 0.15 mg
