A total of 496 Wherry/Capehart housing untis constructed on Ft. Meade Between 1952-1960 are still present on the installation. They vary in size from one to four bedrooms depending on the sqhare footage of the individual units.

There were two periods of family housing construction in the 1950s. The first family housing area, Meade Heights, was constructed in 1952 as part of the Wherry housing program. The housing units were constructed and maintained by a private developer and Ft. Meaded leased the housing units from the developer. Fort Meade acquired permanent ownership of these housing untis in 1957. The houses are typically 2 Yi story, brick untis, with several apartments in each unti. The buildings are grouped around courtyards with small parking lots. The buildings are similar in design and construction to post war garden apartment complexes.

The second period of family housing took place in 1959 as part of the Capehart housing program. The plan of these housing units varys by location. The housing units are a mix of single story, stand alone or duplex units. These units are located in the 7 400-7700 area of Fort Meade and are located in the northwestern corner of the installation. The buildings are all brick construction and are laid out like a typical suburban community.

The 7000-7300 area is also Capehart housing. These units are laid out like row houses. typically containing 4-8 housing untis per building. The buildings are all two stories, the first story is brick veneer and the second is covered with siding.

MARYLAND HISTORICAL TRUST NR-ELIBILITY REVIEW FORM AA-34H

The Army Environmental Center has prepared a historic context entitled ··For Want of a Home: A Historic Context for Wherry and Capehart Military Family Housing." The context states that approximately 250,000 family housing units were constructed between 1950-1964 under these housing programs. The context concludes that Wherry/Capehart family housing is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Wherry and Capehart housing units at Fort Meade are not eligible for listing in the National Register. The housing units have been evaluated under National Register Criteria A, Criteria C, and under Criteria Consideration G. The houses are not eligible under Criteria A, since they were not associated with the Cold War. While the houses improved the standard ofliving of military families during the cold War, the Cold War wold have continued without the housing. The houses are not eligible under Criteria C. During the 1950s there was an increase in the number of families in the United States. The construction industry responded by building large numbers of single-family homes. The Wherry and Capehart houses at Fort Meade are similar to millions of other single-family homes constructed in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Materials and construction methods used in the Fort Meade houses are indistinguishable from other homes constructed during this time frame. The Wherry and Capehart housing areas are not considered exceptionally significant and do not meet Criteria Consideration G. The housing units have no direct association with Cold War events. The houses would have been constructed whether there was a Cold War or not because family housing was needed at existing military installations during this time frame.
