What kind of vehicle is this Audi A5 Sportback? A coupé? An Avant? This vehicle does not fit into familiar categories.

It defines a class of its own – a five-door coupé. From the elongated, three-dimensionally carved bonnet to the rear, the design echoes the classic

form of a two-door. The sharp distinctive lines convey vehicle expression and stance. The flat roof is stretched elegantly over the frameless doors

and a sporty shoulder line accentuates the large wheels. Short overhangs and a longer wheelbase create additional dynamics.

The elegant yet powerful roofline of the Audi A5 Sportback is rounded off by its smoothly accentuated rear.

The redesigned rear lights are particularly fascinating: they are the optical link between the shoulder line at

the side and the edge of the bumper. The horizontal lines of the rear bumper accentuate the decisiveness of

the design, while the diffuser insert in a contrasting colour ensures increased dynamics. The front fog lights

have been given a new design; they are enclosed by a black high-gloss blade. The optional xenon headlights

with integrated LED daytime running light strip are a special eye-catcher. The newly interpreted Singleframe

with its sculptural structure makes the vehicle look more self-confident, while the elegant lines of the bonnet

make the car lighter and sportier.

It only takes a millisecond for a normal driving situation to become a challenge. The best option is to recognise dangerous situations early and therefore avoid them

as far as possible. To this end, the A5 Sportback has extensive assistance systems. On request, Audi active lane assist for example, which warns the driver if the vehicle

is inadvertently drifting out of lane and gently intervenes in the steering if necessary, while the optional Audi side assist* monitors the areas to the left, right and behind

the vehicle and issues a warning during lane changing if there is a vehicle in the direct vicinity in the adjacent lane.

Audi drive select lets you drive according to your mood – comfortable or sporty as you prefer. On request, the dynamic steering* can be ordered with the system;

this adapts to the respective mode selected and ensures even smoother running or faster implementation of your steering commands.

Each new kilometre proves the performance of the Audi A5 Sportback and makes each drive an

exciting experience. There is a wide range of powerful and torquey engines available. All the

petrol engines use the economical TFSI® technology and are among the most economical and

cleanest injection engines currently available world-wide. The diesel engines also combine

sportiness and efficiency. Thanks to TDI technology, they unite high torque forces and low fuel

consumption.

The quattro® permanent all-wheel drive sets standards in agility with wheel-selective

torque distribution and self-locking centre differential. The system transfers the driving

force dynamically and asymmetrically to all four wheels in accordance with the situation –

for outstanding traction. On request, you can experience even more precise cornering with

the optional quattro with sports differential. The new standard electromechanical power

steering works depending on the speed and ensures greater steering precision and comfort.

In addition, it only requires fuel if you actively request steering support.

Slim optional xenon headlights with a LED daytime running light strip and

large air inlets give the front of your A5 its typically impressive appearance.

The brake light integrated into the tailgate emphasises the aesthetic design

of the vehicle. Furthermore, its LED technology also reacts more quickly than

The interior radiates elegance and sportiness. The architecture is harmonious and creates a lively

atmosphere. Selected materials emphasise the high quality of workmanship, which you will see

and above all feel.

New steering wheels, colours and chrome applications emphasise this feeling. The standard leather-

covered sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design provides a good grip, as does the ergonomically

shaped gear or selection lever knob, which is also leather-covered.

The optional MMI® navigation plus has been enhanced. Operation is intuitive via the MMI® button with

integrated joystick or voice control. MMI navigation plus features include a high-quality 7-inch colour

display with 3D map representation and a hard drive for your music and media data. In conjunction with

the Bluetooth car phone online, you even have a separate WiFi hotspot available. In addition, you can

will already impress in the first few metres. The 3.0 TFSI V6 spontaneously

comes to life, six turbocharged cylinders release 245 kW of power. The TFSI®

technology ensures you make progress not only more quickly, but also more

efficiently. The displacement of less than 3 litres makes the power unit light

multifunction sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design with

TFSI® technology is employed in the A5 Sportback.

What’s special about that is: it combines the

advantages of FSI® with a supercharging that

ensures even better power distribution. The two

TFSI engines you have available are all equipped

with the economic start-stop system and it goes

without saying that they comply with the EU5

emission standard.

The 1.8 TFSI has 125 kW of power and a maximum

torque of 320 Nm. And yet it is one of the most

fuel-efficient engines of its class: in the ideal case,

consumption is as low as 5.8 l per 100 km with

manual transmission. It accelerates from 0 to

100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. The powerful 2.0 TFSI

engine and thereby 155 kW will have you

sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds.

Just like the A5 Sportback, the S5 Sportback has

efficient TFSI® technology. It has a 3.0 TFSI V6

engine that generates a powerful 245 kW.

An innovative mechanically-driven supercharger

system with charge air intercooler is employed here

and turns the 6-cylinder engine into a compact

powerhouse with moderate fuel consumption.

This is assisted by the start-stop system that

switches the engine off automatically in different

standstill situations, and switches it on again when

the brake is released. The S5 Sportback is

exclusively available with the fast 7-speed double

clutch S tronic and quattro® permanent all-wheel

drive.

It is not just the peak torque of 440 Nm, also

impressive is the torque curve, with at least 90 %

of the maximum torque being available across

a speed range of 2,200 to 5,900 rpm. Thanks to

its spontaneous responsiveness and exceptional

power delivery across the entire speed range, the

6-cylinder engine promotes a particularly dynamic

driving style. That way, it accelerates accelerates

the S5 Sportback from 0 to 100 km/h in

5.4 seconds.

One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel.

What sounds perfectly normal now was cause

for huge excitement 20 years ago, when Audi

revolutionised the market with the first 2.5 litre

TDI engine. Since then, developments such as

common rail technology have made TDI even

more efficient. Piezo injectors ensure the fuel is

finely and precisely distributed. Consequently,

since the first TDI, the engines have become

more economical, whilst specific output has

increased. So it was only logical that a diesel car

should then enter the world of motorsport. And

successfully too: in 2006, Audi was the first car

maker to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with a diesel-

powered race car, the Audi R10 TDI – and then

went on to repeat this victory several times over,

most recently in 2011.

Powerful TDI engines are available for the

Audi A5 Sportback, which are equipped with

intelligent common rail technology and the

standard start-stop system. The 2.0 TDI with

130 kW and 6-speed manual transmission emits

an average of 122 g CO₂/100 km and is also

available with the convenient multitronic system.

The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW is new, and one of the

most efficient six-cylinder engines in the world

currently available. The top-of-the-range engine is

the 3.0 TDI with 180 kW. It accelerates you with a

torque of 500 Nm to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

Everybody defines driving dynamics differently.

We define it like this: drive exactly how you feel.

With the optional Audi drive select, you can

influence individual vehicle components at the

push of a button and so change the character of

your Audi.

You have up to five modes available: efficiency,

comfort, dynamic, auto and, in conjunction with

one of the optional MMI® navigation systems,

individual mode, allowing you to determine

yourself how the associated vehicle components

should behave. The comfort mode is especially

suitable for providing the most relaxed driving

possible on long journeys. The auto mode offers

a generally comfortable yet sporty driving

experience. For particularly sporty driving, for

example on winding roads, there is the dynamic

mode. The efficiency mode, however, allows

consumption-improved driving. As an integral

part of Audi drive select, it is characterised by a

changed shift program and more energy-efficient

operation. In every mode, the vehicle adjust-

ments depend on the equipment present. Audi

drive select affects the engine, transmission

and steering as standard. In addition, you can

influence the suspension with damper regulation,

the dynamic steering* and the quattro® with

sports differential among other features – if

available. The engine and gears react more

spontaneously or in a more balanced manner to

movements of the accelerator, depending on the

mode chosen. Moreover, the engine speeds at

which gear changes take place are varied in

models with automatic transmission – in dynamic

mode, they only happen at higher engine speeds,

while in comfort mode they take place at lower

ones. The steering can also be adapted to the

driving situation, from sporty and firm to

comfortable. quattro with sports differential

distributes the drive force variably to the rear

axle to attain a high level of agility and

acceleration performance while cornering.

quattro®

quattro® is a permanent all-wheel drive system.

If the wheels on one axle of the vehicle lose grip

on the road and threaten to spin, then the power

is transferred to the other axle – automatically and

permanently distributed through the centre

differential. The basic distribution is 40 : 60 – 40 %

of the power comes from the front axle, 60 % from

the rear. The benefit is better traction during

acceleration and improved safety due to

exceptional grip. So much for the technology.

But what makes quattro unique is really the

driving feel. “As if you are stuck to the road,” some

customers say. We put it like this: quattro gives

you a better feel for the road and thus more safety.

The optional quattro® with sports differential further

reinforces this unmistakeable quattro feeling. Vehicles

tend to experience understeer when steering or

driving into corners. This is a normal physical process:

a moving object opposes a change in direction. The

elastic tyres and the suspension mounts tense up until

the new direction has been adopted. When

accelerating into a corner, the load on the front

axle is reduced and it therefore transfers less

lateral force to the tyres – the vehicle understeers.

With the sports differential on the rear axle, the

tendency to understeer is largely counteracted.

This is because the quattro rear axle differential has

been extended left and right by a clutch system with

two gear levels. They ensure that the individual

wheels on the rear axle receive different levels of

torque. The clutches are activated by an electro-

hydraulic actuator. Depending, for example, on the

steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw angle and

driving speed, the system calculates the right

distribution of wheel torque for any driving

situation. In this way the power is specifically

channelled to the outer rear wheel, when steering

or accelerating into a corner. The effect: the vehicle

is virtually pressed into the corner and follows

the angle of the front wheels. The variable left

and right driving forces also help stabilise the

steering and the usual steering corrections are

hardly necessary.

With quattro® we created

one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world.

The 7-speed dual clutch transmission enables

rapid gear shifting with hardly any perceptible

break in propulsive power and is therefore

particularly efficient.

As long ago as 1985, Walter Röhrl tested this

technology in the Sport quattro S1 – and was

suitably impressed. Audi drivers share his

enthusiasm to this day, because the modern

S tronic changes gear in a flash. To do this, two

multi-plate clutches serve the different gears.

One large clutch transfers the torque via a solid

drive shaft to the gearwheels of the odd-

numbered gears. A second clutch serves the

even-numbered gears via a hollow shaft. Both

parts of the transmission are permanently

active, although there is only ever one actively

connected to the engine via a closed clutch. For

example, when the driver accelerates in third

gear, the second part of the transmission is

already engaged in fourth gear. The gear change

happens very quickly through the change of

clutches – the first clutch opens, whilst the

second one closes. The gear change only lasts a

few hundredths of a second and is completed

with virtually no interruption in the power flow.

It runs so smoothly and comfortably that the

driver barely notices it.

It does not matter whether the driver chooses

the fully automatic modes with the programs

D (Drive) or S (Sport) or, for example, changes

gear manually with the optional shift paddles –

the gear change feels precise and extremely

sportive. Even with all of this dynamic technology,

the S tronic still remains very efficient. Due to

MMI® – Multi Media Interface

Our claim of “Vorsprung durch Technik” is one

that we are trying to fulfil in every part of an Audi

– as demonstrated by the Multi Media Interface

(MMI®) which has undergone further development.

The MMI is used to operate a number of in-car

media, the navigation system and other comfort

functions.

Until now, the MMI has been easy to use – but the

new MMI® navigation plus makes it even easier,

with a reduced number of buttons for a better

overview. All six so-called hard keys, for telephone

or navigation functions for example, are located

around the central rotary/push-button control –

for intuitive operation. The buttons for radio and

media are logically located close to the volume

control. In conjunction with Bluetooth car phone

online, you have Google Earth images available

for navigation, amongst other things. The Google

point-of-interest search will take you to

restaurants, sites or other places that might be

particularly interesting for you. And on request,

Digital Audi Broadcasting reception (DAB)

guarantees even more music enjoyment.

By the way, you can make all your navigation

system entries by voice control, leaving you more

relaxed when you reach your destination.

Follow your intuition –it will get you to the right destination.

Radio: the integrated radio receiver is set up

for VHF, LW and MW and optionally transmits

digital radio with a continually updated

station list.

Media: display of available media sources such

as the jukebox, inserted SDHC cards, Audi

connection. Straight from the Internet: use Audi

connect to search for any special destinations in

the MMI® using Google, request the latest news

and the current weather forecast for your

destination. Data transfer is handled via the UMTS

module of the Bluetooth car phone online, which

can be ordered as an option for the MMI®

navigation plus. The WiFi hotspot is a world first

and can be fitted ex-factory if required. You can

request important information, data and e-mails

using your laptop, iPad or netbook as conveniently

as if you were in the office. Communication with

the Internet takes place via a vehicle-specific

UMTS module through the roof aerial.

Online at all times with Audi connect.Even on the road.

Navigation/Google search: a UMTS module is used to navigate on the basis of true-to-life Google Earth

images. High-resolution aerial and satellite images make orientation quite simple. Google point-of-

interest search can be used with voice control for plain text and keyword searches, providing you with

detailed tips about your destination. Using myAudi or Google Maps you can prepare your very own

navigation destinations on your PC at home and send these to your vehicle. When you start your journey,

they are loaded into the MMI® navigation plus.

Assistance systems

Because they protect something very valuable,

you will find our most outstanding employees working in the area of vehicle safety.

The development of a new vehicle includes a

number of crash tests. At first as virtual tests on

the computer, then finally with the car itself in the

halls of the Audi Vehicle Safety Department. Our

engineers do not just evaluate data from their own

series of tests but also data from real accidents

recorded by accident researchers and scientists

from the Audi Accident Research Unit (AARU).

The unit was founded in 1998 and works together

with the police and doctors to establish the most

accurate information possible about accidents.

With the help of this information, our series of

tests is continually being refined.

In the A5 and S5 Sportback, there are many

safety features which work in concert. In the

event of an accident, the engine and the fuel

supply are immediately stopped, the door locking

mechanism is opened and the hazard lights are

activated. The interior of the vehicles is equipped

with an airbag system: adaptive full-size driver

and front-passenger airbag with seat position

recognition function, side airbags at the front

and a head airbag system are standard. The front

seats are additionally equipped with belt

tensioners and belt force limiters, and the special

seat structure impedes slipping underneath the

seat belt. The highly rigid passenger

compartment made from quality steel with

improved deformation qualities offers extremely

good protection.

The Audi A5 not only comes with many new technical

innovations but also with something extra special on

request: a sort of sixth sense – or Audi pre sense. Driving

situations are categorised through a radar sensor, and

warning measures initiated through to collision avoidance.

Audi pre sense front additionally monitors the traffic ahead

via a radar sensor of the optional adaptive cruise control.

In critical situations, the Audi braking guard warns the

driver and reinforces braking force if necessary.

within the control range from 30 to 200 km/h the automatic distance

control detects vehicles driving in front within system limits using a

radar sensor. The distance to the vehicle in front is maintained through

automatic braking and acceleration. In addition, Audi braking guard

warns the driver about an imminent collision with the vehicle in front

through an extended brake assist feature. If a collision with a stationary

or moving vehicle is imminent at a vehicle speed of less than 30 km/h,

maximum deceleration is initiated to avoid this collision if possible.

Audi active lane assist* supports you when travelling at speeds

of around 60 km/h or above, when you inadvertently drift out of

your lane, for example, through inattentiveness. Before you cross

over the lane marking which is detected by the camera behind the

windscreen, a gentle corrective steering movement occurs. If the

indicator has been activated, there is no correction. You have the

choice between two system settings (steering time early [A] or late

[B]). Identification of lane markings by the sensors is dependent on

the weather, lighting and quality of the marking.

The lane change assistant Audi side assist* informs you from

speeds of 30 km/h and above with a signal in the exterior mirror

as soon as the system detects another vehicle in the adjacent lane.

Please note: the systems can only work within system limits. They can support drivers, but they are still required to be attentive at all times.

The direct route to enhanced efficiency is

via innovation. For decades, Audi has been

continuously providing decisive impetus for the

entire automobile industry, thereby proving that

effective efficiency is the result of a sustainable

strategy. That’s why fuel consumption and

emission-reducing measures are fitted as

standard to all Audi models. The extensive

technologies are combined in a model-specific

manner and are implemented consistently

throughout the entire vehicle fleet.

The Audi Space Frame (ASF), which is used in

a range of Audi models, is a milestone in the

extensive experience Audi has gained with

lightweight construction. With this revolutionary

construction method, the weight of the body

shell is reduced by about a third in comparison

with conventional steel constructions. The latest

innovation in lightweight construction: the

weight-reducing aluminium hybrid construction

used in the Audi A6.

Furthermore, with the TDI, Audi has developed

one of the world’s most successful diesel

technologies. The combination of direct diesel

injection and turbocharging provides high

efficiency and excellent engine power. Current

highlight: the 3.0 TDI clean diesel in the Audi A4

Saloon¹. It already fulfils the EU6 emission

standard that does not come into force in Europe

until 2014.

Another highlight: the downsizing technology on

the TFSI® petrol engines. Five times in succession,

the 2.0-litre TFSI engine has been voted “Engine

of the Year”². A new evolutionary stage in efficiency

is set by Audi with the Q5 hybrid quattro: as a

pioneer of electrical mobility, it marks the entry

into a future that will have low emission levels in

the long term.

The potential of the frugal TDI and TFSI engines

is brought particularly efficiently onto the road

with the S tronic dual-clutch transmission with

low engine speeds and shorter gearshifting

times. And the aerodynamic design of the Audi

bodies can contribute to an additional fuel saving

through a combination of low drag and low lift.

All measures contribute towards a perfect

combination of efficiency and sportiness in every

Lights

xenon plus including headlight cleaning system

The headlights with durable gas discharge technology

for dipped and main beam enable an intensive illumi-

nation of the road with evenness and range, in a colour

resembling daylight both close-up and in the distance.

The automatic-dynamic beam angle control prevents

oncoming traffic from being dazzled; daytime running

light strip and rear lights in LED technology with low

power consumption

The dynamic cornering light identifies the course of

the road from the movement of the steering wheel.

The headlights swivel – depending on the steering

and 110 km/h. Also included is the turning light,

which automatically switches on when the indicator

has been engaged for a while and illuminates the

High-beam assist

working within system limits, it automatically detects

the traffic situation, the high beam is automatically

switched on or off. The system thereby improves the

Audi connect

Networked mobility. The term Audi connect combines

all the applications and developments that connect

the Internet, the owner and the infrastructure in cur-

rent and future Audi models. Audi connect creates

infotainment and entertainment functions and raises

the level of both automotive comfort and fun to new

heights. Online information (such as navigation with

point-of-interest search, Google Earth images, weather,

news, Audi traffic information online) is transmitted

and integrated directly into the vehicle via a UMTS

module integrated in the Bluetooth car phone online

and the customer’s SIM card in the vehicle. The optio-

nal MMI® navigation plus facilitates the use of these

Audi connect services. Thanks to a WiFi hotspot,

the Internet can be accessed via a mobile end device

from the rear during driving or when the vehicle is

at a standstill. Important notes: online services are

only available in connection with mobile phone con-

tracts with data option and only within the range of

the respective mobile networks. Additional costs can

be incurred for the reception of data packages from

the Internet, depending on the terms of your mobile

phone contract, particularly when used abroad: be-

cause of the high data volume involved, the use of

a data flat rate is strongly recommended! Please

contact your mobile services provider for more de-

tailed information. Audi connect is available in all

European countries except for Turkey, Malta, Cyprus

and Iceland. In Russia only in the Moscow and

A5 Sportback: a monochrome display provides you

with information from the onboard computer, auto

check system, scope of display of the MMI system,

brake wear indicator at front, clock and digital speed

display; the outside temperature display shows an

ice crystal at temperatures under +5 °C to warn of

possible black ice. The display is also used to indicate

the current gear in vehicles with manual transmission.

The integrated efficiency programme assists you with

consumption data overviews, display of additional

loads and fuel-saving tips for more economic driving;

including attention assist

Part of the driver information system; the attention

assist analyses driving behaviour using a range of

sensors and warns the driver if anything indicates

means of gentle, corrective steering intervention;

monitored continuously or just shortly before crossing

Start-stop system

helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions

by switching off the engine in stationary phases, e.g.

at traffic lights. The starting process is initiated as

soon as the driver presses the clutch or releases the

foot brake for the vehicle to move off again.

The Rear Seat Entertainment of the 2nd generation is a

9-inch screen with integrated DVD player for installation

available Bluetooth headset. With the new holder for

(approximately 3½ to 12 years). The Audi baby seat is

available for babies up to 13 kg, and the Audi child seat

youngster for children up to 18 kg. The washable covers

¹ The figure stated was calculated using the specified measuring procedure (current version of Directive 80/1269/EEC).

² Weight of car, unladen, with driver (68 kg), luggage (7 kg) and with fuel tank filled to 90 %, calculated in

accordance with the current version of Directive 92/21/EEC. Optional equipment may increase the car’s

unladen weight and drag coefficient, whereupon the possible payload limit and the top speed will be reduced
