Historical Importance• Temple to the goddess Ganga, first built about 250 years

ago by the Gurkha monarch Amar Singh Thapa, andrestored in the late 19th century by the royal house ofJaipur.

Map & Location• Gangotri is situated at an altitude of

3,048mts above sea level in the Uttarkashidistrict of Uttarakhand state. Located on thebanks of the holy Bhagirathi River. Gangotriis a small town centered around theGangotri Temple of Goddess Ganga. Religious Importance

• According to mythology, Goddess Ganga, the daughterof heaven, manifested herself in the form a river toabsolve the sins of king Bhagirath's predecessors,following his severe penance of several years.

• Lord Shiva received into his matted locks to minimizethe impact of her fall. The river itself begins at Gangotriwhich literally means Ganga Uttari or Gangadescending.

• As winter approaches the Gangotri Temple open from6:45 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm
