The words highlighted in blue are conversational fillers. In Italian you use conversational fillers such as
allora, bè, quindi and aspetta to help you converse and be more fluent. Write in how Katherine and Suzanne
use conversational fillers in English. Check your Language Awareness at the bottom of the page.
When we speak in English we use connectors to list things in chronological order: first, second,
third, next, then, after that, finally, last, that’s it, etc. These words help our listeners follow the
conversation.

be difficult to learn the whole list of noncount nouns, but if you learn the categories you should be
able to recognize noncount nouns more easily.

Now it’s your turn to write a letter. Refer to the informal letter form below.
Write a letter to a relative or a friend. Put a heading at the top and a salutation at the end. Write
two paragraphs.
In the first paragraph describe your usual morning routine. Describe what you eat and drink and
how you get to school or work. Write 6-8 sentences. Use at least 3 connectors such as: first,
second, third, next, then, after that, finally, last, etc.
In the second paragraph, describe what you are studying. Talk about what you do in the classes.
Say what you like or don’t like about your classes.

Informal Letter Form
NB: Your address and date can go on either the left or the right side of the page. Leave a 2.5 cm margin at
the top, on the bottom and on the left of the page and a 1.5 cm. margin on the right side of the page.
At the end of the letter, you can also write Best wishes or Love (if you know the person well.).
Let’s talk:
Your tutor may ask you to talk to your classmates using the suggestions in Options > Let’s Talk in Learning Links.
First practice using units of measure by saying 2 teaspoons of _______, a half a kilo of
_________, etc. Your teacher will tell you which recipe to look at. Tell your partner what the
ingredients of your recipe are. You can begin like this:
The name of my recipe is: _________________. It calls for / The ingredients are _____________,
______________, _____________, _____________, _____________, and _____________.
Look at Options > Let’s talk > What’s your favorite recipe?.
Review Cooking vocabulary in Options > Vocabulary Building > Cooking vocabulary if you need to learn some cooking verbs. Practice saying the recipe before your
lesson.
Keep these things in mind:
� Be sure to use at least three listing connectors such as first, second, third, next, then, after
that, finally, last, etc.
� When you speak to your classmates, try to speak in English 100% of the time.
Your teacher may ask you about your partner’s recipe, so be sure to take notes and ask questions if
you need to.

Before your lesson, write out your favorite recipe:

(page 2 of 2) and follow the instructions.
Go to Vocabulary Pronunciation > Level A2 > Module 1 > Directions.
Look at Options > Let’s talk > University Life
Look at the letter you wrote to a friend or relative. You will tell your classmate about your life at
school. Think about what you will say and practice aloud before your next lesson. Keep these
things in mind:
� Do NOT read from your letter when you talk to your classmate.
� Try to speak English 100% of the time.
� Use conversational fillers like let’s see, h-m-m, okay, oh, and yeah to help you sound
more fluent. Remind your classmate to use conversation fillers if he or she forgets and
says ‘allora’ or something else in Italian.
� Be prepared to ask your partner some questions about his or her life at university. Have a
real conversation. Make it interesting!
