Transcript of A2 Media PSYCH magazine pitch
Women’s Psychology magazineHannah Blowers
You have been commissioned by the Northern Echo
to produce a new magazine or newspaper product.
Your product could be in any style or genre but
it must be self financed through sales or advertising. You must also produce your magazine
for a specified audience segment within the 16 to 25 age group.
“
”
To ensure that I am able to meet the brief I have done the following:
-BC1
-Ensured that the quality is high
-A gap in the market and is commercially viable
-Self financed through sales and advertising.
I chose to produce a Psychology magazine as there are not many well-known psychology magazines available to buy that would appeal to the younger TA I was asked to cater for by you.
Already existing psychology magazines:• Psychology Today – 25 to 54 years old• Psychologies – 35 to 55 years old
Therefore my USP is that I am aiming towards a younger audience, 16 to 24 year olds, which provides a gap in the market for my magazine.
IPSO- regulator of newspapers/magazines
The IPSO are an independent body that deals with complaints from members of the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines, as well as the conduct of journalists.
There are 16 codes/rules; these act as the ‘rules’ to which editors and journalists must follow.
However there are 5 in particular I need to ensure not to break.
5 golden rules I must follow…
• I will gain the permission from parents before taking photos of the children to ensure they approve of me doing so.
• I will ensure not to trespass by….Gaining consent from the land owner I wish to be on.
• I will not discriminate or offend any type of person by….Not using offensive/discriminating language regarding a person’s religion, race, weight, gender, age or sexual orientation.
• I will not copyright any images by…taking all of the photography myself for my magazine.
• I will not publish inaccurate information about a topic, individual or organisation by…
Ensuring the information is from reliable sources.
My secondary audience for my psychology magazine will include the Northern Echo readers, parents of my younger readers in my TA age range, as well as siblings. Therefore I need to take measures to avoid offending any of these readers and ensure the secondary audience are just as comfortable and happy to read the magazine.Actions I will take…
No inappropriate content No nudity or extreme revealing of my
models skin No taboo language
My secondary audience
Gender: Female
Ages: 16-24
Socioeconomic: BC1
Tribe: Aspirants/Reformers
My audience likes:
Shopping at:• River Island• New Look• Primark• H&M• Topshop
Reading:• Glamour• Cosmopolitan• OK!• Elle
Colours:• Purple• Blue • Pink
Dislike:• Brown• Green• Grey
Hobbies:• Exercising/gym• Socialising with
family and friends
Social media:• Twitter• Facebook• Snapchat• Instagram
Knowing this I can include these aspects into my magazine to attract my TA.
Aspects in my magazine that have to relate to the gender (female) and age (16-24) of my target audience:
Imagery:Young, female models in the images to offer window to future self.
Articles:Make the article chatty, feminine and include topics that females relate to e.g. tanning.
Make the article light-hearted, fast paced, and refer to things that young people can relate to, e.g. include social media references.
Colours:Use colours that are stereotypically female colours e.g.Pink, Purple, white, light blue.
Psychology TodayPsychologies
Sell-lines• Catchy sell-lines• Short• Plenty of sell-lines
Imagery• Metaphorical• Relates to main sell-line• Young, female models• Posed
Colours• Red/pink colour, connotes
romance, a typical topic in a female magazine
• Bright, basic backgrounds, to contrast with colours and model
How it will affect my design…
Fonts• Bold• A lot of fonts in all capital letters• 1 or 2 fonts
Psychology TodayPsychologies
How it will affect my design…
Colours• Uses two colours• Bright, basic backgrounds, to
contrast with text
Language• Short paragraphs• Sub headers• Chatty
Imagery• Young, female model• Posed• Mid-range/ close up
Fonts• Feminine• San-serif and serif
After deciding what topic each of my double page spreads would be, I decided to choose one of them and create two versions of this, one formal and one informal.
Once I designed them on In design, I wanted to carry out research to gain audience feedback to find out the good and bad points of each DPS.
Positives:• Sub headers
allow text breakup
• Black lining on edge looks professional
• Main image is creative, model reflects my TA
• The fact the word ‘behind’ is behind the word ‘tanning’ in the header
Negatives:• Orange
breakout box looks wrongly placed
• Dislike the kicker, looks like the main text
• Too many statistics, wont attract young TA.
• Columns are quite wide and long, looks too lengthy
Formal
• Main image is the focal point, which relates to tanning
• Header needs to be bolder to make it the first thing you see
Positives:• Colours relative
to topic of tanning
• Three photos down the side gives another focal point and looks professional
• Orange sub headers good as breaks up text
Negatives:• Kicker same
size as main text, doesn’t stand out
• Header needs to be bigger to stand out
• Add more sub headers to make text look shorter
• Some parts are too chatty so won’t take the issue serious
Informal
• Good ratio of text to imagery
• Needs a quote insert to break up text on right page
After my audience feedback, I’ve decided to take forward my informal design, as it attracted my focus group better, which are my TA.
Improvements to DPS:• Put a quote insert in – break up text• Make kicker stand out more/ move it up• Make size of header bigger/bolder• Make language slightly less chatty
Aspects taking forward:• Colours (black and orange)• Narrative voice ( ‘you’ and ‘we’) • Header in between both pages
