    STANDARD

    Federal Mil A-A-59326A

The sta nda rd for cam &g roove couplings w ere ba sed on the US Military

Specification Mil-C-27487. The Mil-C-27487 specified the casting method s,

materials, dimensions, tolerances, pressure ratings and inspection proce-

dures. In 1998, the origina l Mil-C-27487 specificat ion w as replaced by a new

Federa l Milita ry stan da rd: A-A-59326A. Fed era l Mil A-A-59326A guaran tees

interchange ab ility of couplings designed t o the sa me specification.

    Interchangeabilitywith other brands

Between ma nufacturers cam &g roove couplings are interchang eable w ith

    the except ion o f 1/2" (12.7 mm), 5" (127 mm) and 8" (203.2 mm). The A-A-

    59326A Mil-specification d oes no t a pply to 1/2", 5" a nd 8" ca m &groove co u-

plings, due to the presence of two versions of cam &groove couplings in

    tod ays market.

Limitations: Hose shanks with larger serrations are not designed to be

assembled w ith a ferrule or sleeve. Hose da mag e can result if they are

swa ged. The larger shank serrations will cut into the ho se resulting in leak-

ag e or permanent hose failure.

N.B.: Cam &groove couplings must never be used for steam or compressed air

    applications.

    EN 14420-7

The Europea n st an da rd EN 14420-7 wa s a pproved by CEN in Sept emb er

2004, and wa s applied to cam &groove couplings manufactured t o American

milita ry spe cificat ion MIL-C-27487 / A-A-59326A. This American sta nd ard

does not a pply to the connection side, but only to the coupling side. Other

parts like levers, bolts, rings and seals are not stand ardized.

Cam &g roove couplings prod uced to EN 14420-7 are interchang eab le with

those produced to the original MIL-C-27487 standard, but differ in terms of

hose tail design, thread , part number etc. A flat thread sea l has been a dd ed

to the female threaded parts, and a smooth hose shank complying with EN

14420-2 /DIN 2817 has b een a dd ed fo r assemb ly with RK safet y clamps

    complying with EN 14420-3 /DIN 2817.

N.B.: Europea n sta ndard EN 14420-7 replaces DIN 2828 but does no t replace

    MIL-C-27487 and Federal Mil A-A-59326A.

    DIN 2828

Couplings produced to DIN 2828 are interchangeable with those produced

to the original MIL-C-27487 standard, but differ in terms of hose tail design,

thread, part number etc. A flat thread sea l has been ad ded to t he female

thread ed pa rts, and a smoo th ho se shank complying with DIN 2817 has been

ad ded for assembly with RK-safety clamps.

    OPERATION

    To connect

    1. Open the coupler by pulling back the locking lever above the cam hand les, whilst rotating the ha ndles

aw ay from the bod y of the coupler.

    2. Insert the a daptor into the coupler

    3. Close the coupler by rotating the cam ha ndles towa rds the body of the coupler. Locking occurs when

the ca m handles are closed . The coupler is properly closed w hen the locking levers on bot h the ca m

handles assemblies are flush. For extra security, insert safety clip throug h the ho les above the ca m

hand les. Line pressure, which moves t he coupler and ada ptor independ ently, increases the pressure

on t he cam face, ensuring increased locking leverage. Under normal conditions, safety locks are not

necessary, but a re recommend ed. The ad apt or and t he coupler are designed t o minimize the fluid

turbulence and the a brasion from dry products when connected.

    To disconnect

    4. Open the coupler by pulling b ack the locking lever above the cam hand les, whilst rotating the handles

aw ay from the bod y of the coupler.

    5. Remove the adaptor from the coupler.

    6. Close the coupler by rotating the cam ha ndles towards the bo dy of the coupler. Locking the coupler

when not in use will help protect it from accident al dama ge.

    Seal

    Standard seal

The sta nda rd cam &groove seal consists of a sta nda rd squa re-section, availab le in:

    Closed sea l

VLXPSG closed cam &groove seals are de signe d for extreme chemical app lications. These sea ls combine the best prope rties of tw o

different mat erials; the pressure set o f the rubb er core and the chemical resistance provided by t he FEP enca psulation. Encapsulation

of the Silicone core ensures improved o perationa l safety, when compared with a n open envelope seal. VLXPSG seals are produced

without the use of an imal derived ingred ients, ADI free. This reduces the risk of BSE prion cont aminat ion. VLXPSG closed

cam &groove sea ls resist high t emperature opera tion: from -60C /-76F up to 204C /400F.

    Open envelope seal

The open envelope sea l consists of a U-section PTFE envelope and a sq uare-section EPDM core. The construction method used for the

open envelope seal ensures excellent compression properties. The PTFE envelope allow s the seal to withsta nd temperat ures of up t o

    THREADS

Three different types of th read are g enerally used fo r cam &groove coupling s:

BSP = British Stand ard Pipe

BSPT = British Stand ard Pipe Taper

    NPT = National Pipe Taper

In Europe, BSP and BSPTthread s are more commonly used than NPTthread s. NPTthread s are typically American threads. Since manyAmerican industrial machines and products a re exported t o Europea n ma rkets, coupling s with NPTthreads are a regular requirement. The

main difference betw een the three thread types referred to above is the seal method used . Although BSP threads are sealed using a sea l

or o-ring, BSPTand NPTthreads a re sealed b y their conical thread .

    TESTING

The following a spects of LMCs cam &groove couplings are tested in house:

Ada ptor a nd co upler dimensions

    Handle strength

    Seal properties

    Thread dimensions

    Impact resistant

    Adaptor and coupler dimensions

High-techno logy mea suring eq uipment

High-techno logy mea suring too ls are used to mea sure the specific dimensions of cam &

groove coupling s to ensure compliance with t he d imensions req uired under the Federal Mil

A-A-59326A, European EN 14420-7 and the German DIN 2828 stand ard s. Altho ug h ord inary

measuring systems are una ble to give sufficiently precise dimensions for th is purpose, our

high-technolog y measuring system is ab le to measure complex cam &groove coupling product

    positions and shape s.

    Dimension gauges

The shape of the ad apt or coupling e nab les the interchang eab ility of coupler parts. Specially

designed g aug es are used in ad dition to measurement systems. The use of test ga uges

minimises inspection times, ensures interchang eab ility and mainta ins seal properties when

using specially-designed seals, such as envelope seals.

Two ga uges a re used for each d imension; one small and the ot her larger. In the first sta ge of

testing, the small ga uge is passed across the head of the a dapto r section. If the ga uge can not

pass, the ad apt er head falls w ithin t he permissible (minus) tolerances. If the larger gaug e passes across the ad apt or head w ith no interruption, the compo nent is

compliant and its dimensions fa ll within t he pe rmissible + (plus) tolerances.

    Material quality

An in-house spectroscope is used to identify the ma terials used in t he ca m &groove coupling s.

The spectroscope ana lyses the precise q uant ity of a ll mat erials of the coupling.

We can t herefore offer our customers a g uarant ee tha t the mat erials used comply fully with the

    relevant standard.

    Handle strength

LMC handles are designed t o resist a w ide range o f applications in many industries. All stand ard ha ndles are investment -cast a nd t rian-

gular in section. The product ion metho d a nd t riang ular section g uarant ees excellent mechan ical properties. The w ear resistance of

this material was t ested using a Rockwell hardness tester. LMC handles achieve bet ter test results than sintered hand les.

Sintered ha ndles begin to fracture w hen subjected to a load of 1600 Kgf, LMC handles do not even sta rt to bend until subjected to a

load of 1000 Kgf. Even w hen sub jected t o a loa d of 2400 Kgf , LMC cam &groove ha ndles still show no sign o f fracture.

    Seal properties

After chemical structure, seal compression set has t he next most significant effect on the sea l of cam &groove coupling s. A seal of

correct ha rdness will ensure tha t the cam &groove co upling is sealed properly and safely. Cam &groove sea l hardness is tested using

    a durometer.

    Thread dimensions

All cam &groove t hreads are tested using t hread g aug es. Our production site has ga uges for all dimensions and all standa rds.

    Impact resistance

Impact resistance t ests were carried out on 3 and 4 aluminium couplers and nine ot her brands in order to t est the me chanical

strengt h of LMC cam &groove coupling s. A 2.3 kg /5 lbs weigh t w as d ropped from a height of 1.5 metres /5 feet, and the impact on

    COATINGS

Sometimes sta nda rd cam &groove coupling materials, like stainless steel, are not sufficiently resistant to ext remely agg ressive chemicals.

However, at LMC-Couplings, our couplings feature high-resistance coatings, such as:

    ECTFE PTFE

    PFA

    ECTFE (up to 1000)

ECTFE (Ethylene ch lorotrifluoroet hylene) coating s are designed to resist highly-concentrat ed a nd a gg ressive chemicals. Couplings

with an ECTFE-coating show excellent electric isolating and fire properties and resist to temperatures up to 150C /300F.

    PFA (up to 200)

The key quality of a PFA (Perfluoroa lkoxy) coat ing is the t emperat ure resistance up to 260C /500F. Their effect ive ant i-ad -hesive

layer makes PFA coat ings pa rticularly w ell-suited to food and pha rmaceutical industry a pplications.

PTFE (up to 40)PTFE (Poly tet rafluoroet hylene) coat ings a re only 40t hick. PTFE-coa ted coupling s can w ithsta nd t emperatures up to 260C /500F.

Like PFA-coa ted couplings, PTFE couplings have excellent a nti-adhe sive qua lities and are suitable for food indust ry applications.

    PVDF (up to 800)

Like ECTFE coa ting s, PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) coat ings ca n resist high ly-concentra ted and a gg ressive chemicals, but w ith the

ad ded a dvan tag e of high temperature resistance. These coupling s are wear-proof and also suitab le for food industry app lications.

    PTFE liner

LMC-Couplings is ab le to provide his customers PTFE lined couplings. Our PTFE

facility has been specially built to meet the highest industrial requirements.

This room is separated from our other production facilities to ensure a clean

and dust-free working environment . PTFE lined couplings are used in the pha r-

maceutical, cosmetics and food industry. Please contact our sales department

    for further information.

    ACCESSORIES

All LMC-Coupling s, cam &groo ve co uplings (stainless steel, b rass, bronz e, a luminium a nd

polypropylene)* as st and ard are supplied w ith sta inless steel investment-cast triangular-section

ha nd les. Sta inless steel provides the best chemical resistance. Their triang ular section and

investment -casting production method improves the mechanical strength o f the hand le.

Even greater security and safety is ensured by LMCs cam &groove couplings with patented

safety hand les. Simply push the nut on the hand le dow nw ards and the coupling connection is

sealed. The safe ty version of LMCs cam &g roove couplings ca n be mad e extra-secure by

using the safety p in, as on a ll stand ard LMC-Couplings cam &groove coupling s.

Where dust ca ps (type DC) are used to t erminat e hose or pipe assemblies, LMCs lockab le han-

dles offer even higher safety levels. These pa tented L-shaped handles are physically locked, so

tha t the dust cap ca n only be removed by unlocking t he hand les with a key. Safety hand les are

also recommend ed to secure dust caps.
