mission statement
It is the mission of New England
Village, Inc. to enable adults living
with developmental disabilities to
experience dignified, enriching
lives as part of a dynamic,
supportive campus community.

“For it’s hard,
you will find,
to be narrow of mind,
if you’re young at heart.”Lyric from “Young at Heart”
by Carolyn Leigh & Johnny Richards
5
Dear Family and Friends of New England Village,
A funny thing happens when you start approaching the 40 year mark – peopledon’t think of you as young anymore! Factor in a reputation for financial stabilityand longevity, and let’s face it, “young and hip” isn’t the first image that pops intoone’s mind. That’s the interesting conundrum that New England Village as anorganization currently finds itself in and like most misperceptions, the truth liessomewhere in the middle.
New England Village is first and foremost, a long-term residential option for adultswith intellectual disabilities. Families choose our community for their loved onebecause they know they can build a life here. In fact, 42% of our 79 residents havelived at the Village for 20 years or more. Our families have the peace of mind thatcomes with knowing that New England Village will be here to care for and nurturetheir loved one, especially when they no longer can. But if you think we are anotherone of those “Over 55” communities that are cropping up everywhere, you wouldbe sorely mistaken.
In the following pages you will meet five individuals who are representative of the youth and vitality that is omnipresent throughout our community. Eachparticipates in a program offered either on our Pembroke campus or at our Hansonday services facility (some take part in multiple offerings). They, along with themany other young people featured pictorially in this annual report, bring a freshperspective and joie de vivre to our community that only youth can.
Philanthropic support has always been integral to our success as an organizationand as we move closer to 2012 and our 40th anniversary celebration, we areespecially grateful to those supporters who have embraced our mission andhelped us grow into the vibrant and diverse organization we are today. We trulyhave the best of both worlds here: the experience and judgment that comes with maturity and the joyful enthusiasm of the young at heart.
Keep smiling,
Bryan Efron, Ph.D.Executive Director

“Heidi came to New England Village in 2003 at the age
of 22 from the Perkins School for the Blind. Her transition
from child to adult services went smoothly and Heidi
settled in nicely at her new home; but it’s important to note
that New England Village offers so much more than
beautiful structures, it also offers opportunities for
personal growth and friendship. Heidi is musically gifted
and loves to perform. Her support staff makes sure that
Heidi has an outlet for these talents. Currently, she
participates in the South Shore Conservatory’s Community
Voices choral group, volunteers at two different nursing
homes where she plays the piano and flute and has even
spoken to school groups about disability awareness. She’s
also a frequent participant in campus enrichment
offerings. Her Individualized Support Plan this year
includes putting on a musical show for her Village friends.
Always the crowd pleaser, I know there will be a big
turn-out!”Monica West, House Manager

Founded in 1972 by parents who wanted to create an enlightened
new model of community living for their adult children with
intellectual disabilities, New England Village currently supports
79 residents in 17 homes.

“Unhappy at his former program with a different
provider, 25-year-old Brian joined our Employment
Services division last April. Brian likes to keep busy and
earn a paycheck. He now works primarily as part of our
off-site cleaning crew and has done incredibly well here.
His mom Elaine attributes his happiness to the varied
types of work New England Village Day Services offers,
our supportive staff and the opportunities Brian has to
socialize with his peers. A man of many skills, Brian is a
gifted musician, loves to work with tools and has a passion
for old Chevy vehicles. He sometimes drives a truck
to work.”Joan Smith, Employment Services Case Manager
brian emery
hillary jessica kevin
8
Employment Services program participants are provided
consistent and varied work opportunities both on-site through
contract work and in the community through supervised crew
assignments or more independent job placements. New England
Village also operates several small entrepreneurial businesses.
9
“Shy and withdrawn, Lionel left a local vocational
program to join the Day Enrichment Program (DEP) at the
Sollar Wellness Center in May 2010. His roommate Artie
Boyle has been a DEP member since 2009 and has
flourished in the program. The hope was that Lionel could
experience some of that same personal growth. In the
short time that he has been with us, we have seen him
blossom and show his true colors. He has a wonderful
sense of humor, loves playing volleyball in the pool and if
the right song (like Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground”) is
playing, you might catch him dancing and singing in
fitness class. Mission accomplished.”Amy Saschuk, Day Enrichment Program Director
lionel cassetana
arthur kristin marisa
10
The Day Enrichment Program (DEP) at the Sollar Wellness Center
is designed for those individuals who seek a varied and more
dynamic day schedule. Unlike more traditional room based day
habilitation programs, the DEP experience offers a more
interactive and mobile environment.
11
“ Jennifer has been active in our Adult Education
Program since her senior year in high school. A Pembroke
resident herself, she is one of the original members of our
community fitness program, coming every Monday
evening to exercise with a group of 8 -10 other individuals.
We have seen her self-confidence in this class grow each
week to the point where she is now quite comfortable
leading the group through the entire 45 minute class with
little assistance from the fitness instructor. Her smile and
sense of humor can light up a room. She is always willing
to help others and has made many friends at NEV.”Ginger Comeau, Residential Enrichment Coordinator
jennifer white
meg nathaniel peter
12
To complement and enhance the day program activities of Village
residents and to further involve individuals from the community
in Village life, NEV offers a wide variety of evening and weekend
enrichment activities and adult education classes.
13
“Carlos is an energetic young man who enjoys being
engaged in consistent, meaningful activities like art, music
and fitness – offerings that our Pathways day habilitation
program uses to work on functional skills that support
activities of daily living. Last year the Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities (CARF), solicited
artwork for a contest they were sponsoring. The purpose:
to select several pieces that could be displayed in their
new headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. CARF ultimately
received nearly 1000 submissions from all over the country,
including several from our own Pathways program. One in
particular caught the eye of the contest organizers – it was
entitled ‘Koala Bear’ and was created by Carlos Archer. In a
letter to Carlos, Dr. Brian J. Boon, President & CEO of CARF,
stated that “we certainly are honored to have your artwork
grace our offices.” When informed that his painting had
been selected as one of the winning submissions, Carlos
picked up his communication book and pointed to ‘happy.’
Pathways, and in fact everyone in New England Village Day
Services is extremely proud of Carlos for the work he has
done and continues to do.”Rhonda Vickery, Pathways Case Manager

14
Until recently, individuals with more intense support needs have
had very few adult day program options and a one-size-fits-all model
was the norm. Pathways, one of two day habilitation programs
offered by New England Village, offers 1:4 staff/member ratios
allowing it to serve the unique needs of each individual participant.
