EVENTSRoyal British Legion – Poppy Appeal

Poppy Appeal Volunteers needed to help the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Woking and the surrounding area to ensure vital funds for our Service men and women continue to be raised. Can you or a team of friends help keep the Appeal going for 2015?

The role is fun, worthwhile and above all rewarding because the money you help raise is used for helping people like Peter who was there for his country. When we heard Peter had been the victim of a mine blast in Helmand Province – leaving him with severe burns, both legs amputated and unable to come to terms with the loss of his comrade, we were there for him. The RBL were proud to help him in any way we could so that this young man could get on with living his life as independently as possible. Veterans like Peter will continue to need the Legion’s help and support for many years to come. By taking on the role of Poppy volunteer you will help to ensure that we are here for them all.

What are we looking for?Poppy volunteers don't need a military connection, they just need to be organised, and enjoy interacting with others. The role involves distributing poppy boxes, liaising with local businesses, coordinating and recruiting collectors, recording funds collected etc. It is a big commitment, but we can tailor the size of your area of responsibility to suit your time and abilities.

Practical Considerationsyou will be focusing most of your efforts on the main appeal between October and November. Training is provided and expenses are reimbursable.

About the Royal British LegionThe Royal British Legion was formed on 15 May 1921 by the bringing together of four National Organisations for ex-Service men that had established themselves after the Great War of 1914-1918. The main purpose of the Legion was straightforward: to care for those who had suffered as a result of service in the Armed Forces in the Great War, whether through their own service or through that of a husband, father or son. The suffering took many forms including the effects of a war wound on a man's ability to earn a living and support his family and a war widow's struggle to give her children an education.

However, even those who had come through the War relatively unscathed struggled with employment. As a result of the War, Britain's economy plummeted and in 1921 there were 2 million unemployed. Over six million men had served in the War - 725,000 never returned. Of those who came back, 1.75 million had suffered some kind of disability and half of these were permanently disabled. To this figure then had to be added the many that depended on those who had gone to war - the wives and children, widows and orphans as well as the parents who had lost sons, on whom they were often financially dependent.

The situation so moved Lance Bombardier Tom Lister, a Lancastrian, that he decided that if the Government was either unable or unwilling to do anything to improve the lives of ex-Service men, he would do something about it himself. This eventually led to the formation of The Royal British Legion.

When the Legion's leaders looked around in 1921, not only did they see a gigantic task in front of them looking after those who had suffered in the recent War, they also sought to prevent further sacrifice by reminding the nation of the human cost of war and to work actively for peace.

27 August 2015 Page 4

Page 5: A - Z VNB 2015

By the time of the Legion's formation in 1921, the tradition of an annual Two Minute Silence in memory of the dead had been established. The first ever Poppy Appeal was held with the first Poppy Day on 11 November 1921.

We were granted "Royal" status in 1971, and in 1981 we extended our membership to serving members of Her Majesty's Forces, as well as ex-Service personnel. Now, anyone can become a member of The Royal British Legion. We welcome men and women of all ages, whether they have served in the Armed Forces or not.

Being an Appropriate Adult is a challenging, fulfilling and often rewarding role. You don’t need previous knowledge of legal procedures or social work. The role of the Appropriate Adult is not to provide legal advice but to offer impartial support and be a friendly face in the absence of a family member or carer to people who may be feeling frightened, bewildered, and confused in an unfamiliar situation. It is vital that good levels of communication are quickly established between the detainee and AA. This is not always easy as the detainee may be agitated, un-co-operative or even aggressive. In order to open discussions, and in some instances diffuse a volatile situation, it is important that the AA proceeds in a calm and professional manner. It is essential that the AA gains the trust of the detainee without becoming over familiar. Ideally the AA and detainee will be able to converse in a quiet interview room thus removing the detainee from the often chaotic environment of custody which can cause additional anxiety and tension.
