The Office for Human Dignity of the Diocese of Joliet organizes several mission trips each year through its Partnership in Mission program. Our diocese has been sending mission teams to be witnesses to the Gospel call to respond to the needs of the poorest in our world. In 2016, teams from our area travel to the Navajo Nation in

Arizona, Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, and Bolivia. The work done by missioners is mostly either helping with construction or

addressing the medical needs of the people. The missions are open to everyone. Our own Judy Fuschen has accompanied the mission team to Bolivia every April, bringing a fresh supply of fake mustaches and comic relief. If you are able and moved to participate in one of the mission trips, I highly recommend the experience and would support your endeavor.

There are two mission trips each year that are specifically for students in our local universities, to the Philippines and Bolivia. Since 1995, students have traveled to Bolivia to serve the poor of Sucre in an orphanage, free daycare centers, a hospital built by the Diocese of Joliet, two mental hospitals, a soup kitchen for children and various construction sites. Students from the three Catholic universities in the diocese- Benedictine University, Lewis University and University of St. Francis have participated for many years as well as students from the non-Catholic colleges including College of DuPage, Elmhurst College, Joliet Junior College, North Central College, and Olivet Nazarene University. There are often participants who are from the Diocese of Joliet, but happen to attend school outside of the diocese.

I have been on mission several times, traveling to Africa, South America, and even several locations in the United States. Each trip was eye opening and a reminder of how blessed we are to live in a place where security and assistance are something that we can for the most part take for granted. Each trip was also a reminder how much desperate poverty exists in the world and how much work there is to be done.

For the next two weeks, I will be traveling with this year’s group of university students to Sucre, Bolivia. This will be my second time traveling to Bolivia for this mission. I will be the chaplain for the trip, assisting the leadership team with organizing the work, offering Mass each day for the participants, helping out with the work, and other duties as the Holy Spirit assigns (last time I found myself directing the extrication of a student from a rooftop with a broken leg). Mission trips are always an adventure.

Please keep me and the group of students in prayer. Know that I will be praying for you from afar.

Fr. Jason

RE = RECRUIT, REFLECT, REFRESH BY JO STYLER

It is a crazy notion of me sitting with my feet on my desk waiting for RE to begin again in the fall. I am busy trying to get more families into our RE experience. I am also seeking catechists who feel called to share their faith with our chil-dren.

If you know of a Catholic family who is searching for a parish for Religious Education, tell them about MQH RE, or have them contact me at the REO. Likewise, if you know of someone in the parish who you think might make an excel-lent catechist, contact me at the REO so I can reach out to them. Together we can make the MQH RE experience grow.

After reflecting on the RE year, it is good to reorganize and plan for the new RE year. I would like to showcase the great work our kids and catechists do throughout the year. A photographer would be a great addition to the RE ex-perience. Call me at the REO if you would be interested in photographing RE experiences during the year like the Pet Blessing and the Saint Parade.

VBS is a refreshing addition to the MQH Preschool/KEP and RE experience! It will be a week of Adventures in Sci-ence with little ones and youth leaders. We have reached the maximum for the campers, but we are in need of jr. high helpers. Jr High helpers will earn Confirmation Service Hours.

REDISCOVER JESUS- THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL (11)

POINT TO PONDER: Generosity is incredibly attractive. VERSE TO LIVE: “Some give freely, yet grow all the richer; others withhold what is due, and only suf-fer want. A generous person will be enriched, and one who gives water will get water.” PROVERBS 11:24–25

QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How is God inviting you to become more generous? PRAYER: Jesus, liberate me from any inclination to be stingy / ungenerous.

Reflection by guest parishioner from Saint Elizabeth Seton: Maria Llamas

Generosity is one of the most radical invitations from the Gospel and one of the most difficult to live. The Serenity Prayer is helpful to remember when we face challenges as we try to be more generous:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

Having recently watched the movie about Blessed Mother Theresa “The Letters”, I realized there are things that we can certainly change if we are willing to try with faith and with conviction that our actions can inspire others. In the case of Blessed Mother Theresa, she felt the call from God to help the poor, the forgotten. Her goal was not to end poverty in the world by herself, but she knew she had to start somewhere and her actions inspired others, including government leaders. This made her recipient of Nobel Peace Prize, which she humbly accepted to make her cause known and giving all credit to God.

Let’s reflect this week on ways we can be merciful / generous with others, starting with our family members. Je-sus wants us to become the most generous persons in our sphere of influence. Jesus wants that generosity to reach into every area of our lives. It goes beyond financial support; God wants us to be generous with our time, talent, encour-agement, compassion and patience towards others.

“Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise” (Luke 3:11)

YEAR OF MERCY PILGRIMAGE CHURCH HOURS SATURDAYS AT IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH

There is also the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy by visiting a Pilgrimage Church with the intention of acquiring the indulgence, going to confession (before or after the visit), receiving Holy Communion, making a profession of faith, praying for the Holy Father and for the intentions that he bears in his heart for the good of the church and of the entire world.
