Canadian residents will be able to sample Ontario’s fishing oppor-tunities, licence-free, during the weekend of February 16–18th and the week of June 29–July 7th. Sponsored by a diverse range of government and non-government organizations, these events are designed to remind people of the recreational and economic value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of sustaining and enhancing it for future gen-erations. For this reason, anglers without a licence must abide by limits set for the Conservation Licence during these events. All other fees and regulations apply and will be enforced, including size limits and sanctuaries.

Tea time can evoke memories of friend-ships and shared conversations. Taking time to pause and reviewing the day’s events, allows one time to restore.

History credits the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung (28th century B.C.) with the discovery of tea. A meticulous man, the Emperor was known for the practice of carefully boiling all his drinking water. One day while waiting for his pot to boil, a few leaves from a branch of the camellia bush that was burning in the fire, landed in the boiling water. The Emperor’s attention was caught by the aroma which arose from the pot. Intrigued, he drank some of the broth. Immediately captivated by the taste and refreshing quality of the brew, the emperor knew he had discovered something of great importance. News of the Emperor’s discovery spread quickly throughout China, and soon everyone was trying the beverage. Before long, tea – known as Ch’a became an important part of Chinese culture.

The tea plant is a shrubby evergreen and grows to 30 feet, bearing fragrant white flowers. It is pruned to between three and five feet for harvest conve-nience. The best teas grow in mountains to 6,000 feet. Perfect conditions for the flavor and quality include an average shad temperature of 65 F degrees and rainfall of 100 inches a year, with long intervals of sun in-between the showers.

Black teas are fermented, which means they undergo two processes. First the leaves are placed on racks and surrounded by warm air. Then they are exposed to very hot air which turns the

leaves black. After the leaves cool, they are shipped to destinations where they will be sold either as a single leaf or as a blend. Black teas constitute about 95% of the world’s tea production. Some black teas are Ceylon, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, English Breakfast and Prince of Wales.

Green teas are not fermented but rather steamed in a large vat. They have the most delicate flavor of all and are very light in colour when brewed. Popular green teas are Gunpowder and Imperial.

Oolong teas are a blend of black and green teas. Partially fermented they are more delicate than black teas but stronger than green. Some examples are Formosa Oolong and Mainland Oolong.

Traditions surrounding tea differ greatly from Country to Country. The Japanese have a traditional Tea Ceremony where tea drinking and preparation can be a way of enlightenment. Irish like their tea strong with milk and sugar and it is an integral part of an Irish Breakfast. Many Canadians enjoy their tea with milk and/or sugar.

There are so many options – flavoured, specialty, green, black, oolong each bringing its own unique taste to the palette. Why not experiment by taking in “afternoon tea” at a local tea room – which may also include a variety of sandwiches.or scones with butter, clotted cream and jam or cakes and pastries – all very yummy!

Local tea rooms include - Summer-hill Manor Tea Room, Port Hope and Primrose Lane Tea Room, Peterborough. Take a few minutes away from your cares, relax with family and friends and enjoy a cup of tea.

Let’s talk tea!

Winner of the 2010 National Carousel Association Historic Carousel Award presented

to this carousel by Patrick Wentzel for Preserving the Past, Maintaining the Present, and Ensuring the Future.

The Roseneath Carousel was built in 1906 at Abilene, Kansas, by C.W. Parker, the machine is balanced from a center post and powered by a 5 hp electric motor and travels at approximately 4mph The125 Wurlitzer military band organ ushers out nostalgic music.

In early years the Carousel travelled around the fair circuit, surfacing at Mohawk Park in Brantford, Ontario until it was dismantled and placed in storage.

In 1932, a group of seven directors from the Roseneath Agricultural Society purchased the Carousel for $675.00 and returned it to Roseneath re-erecting it in a 16 - sided building, built to house it on the Roseneath fairgrounds, where it remains today.

From 1932 to 1986 maintenance was carried out by local trades people and local High School students who repainted the horses in advance of the annual Rose-neath Fair each year. In 1985 the Carousel was shut down due to disrepair.

In 1987, the Roseneath Carousel Restoration committee undertook a $400,000.00 fundraising campaign to restore the Carousel.

Under the expert hands of German master carver, Konstantin von Waldburg,

the restoration process took one year. The mechanical system was refurbished by Lakeland Machinists in Cobourg.

The wooden sweeps were refurbished by local Partek Construction Company.

Sixteen new gear screen panels depicting scenes from the area of Northumberland County were produced by international artist Ron Bolt from Gores Landing, Ontario. Local artists Herma Seppanen and Avril Bull Jones reproduced Mr. Bolt's paintings onto these gear screen panels.

July 17, 1993 marked the grand re-opening of the Carousel. It is believed the Roseneath Carousel is the only one of its kind in existence in North America.

In 1998, the original Carousel building underwent significant repair to the foun-dation, exterior boards, and an exhaust fan was installed to curb moisture inside.

Since 2011, local artist Heather Cooper along with her husband Terry Price main-tains four or five horses each season.

Fundraising continues!! The Roseneath Carousel committee thanks the National Carousel Association for a $2,000.00 grant received in 2013 towards lighting on the rounding board.

The restoration project is nearing its final phase. Carousel horses are now protected by a new roof and cedar siding. An accessibile interlocking brick walkway leading up to the Carousel was completed in 2018.

Settlement of the township began in the late 1700’s and on February 14th, 1791 the township was officially named after Henry Hamilton, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. “By land and water we flourish” is an expression of the Township’s history and ongoing character, as well as its motto.

The township has a rural charm and consists of six hamlets Baltimore, Bewdley, Camborne, Cold Springs, Gore’s Land-ing and Harwood. It is bounded on the north by the famous Rice Lake and to the south by Lake Ontario and the Town of Cobourg.

The township is surrounded by interesting historical attractions. There is a

Joseph Scriven Monument which recog-nizes Joseph Scriven who wrote the hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”; Mount Ararat, the highest point of the Rice Lake plains and home in 1849 to early Canadian writer Catherine Parr Traill; the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad Causeway that once crossed Rice Lake where partially submerged remains are still visible.

A visit to Hamilton Township offers an incredible diversity of attractions for visitors with Rice Lake being the main attraction appealing to fishermen, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and the many people who simply wish to get away, get some fresh air, sunshine and just relax.

Rice Lake abounds in history. The hamlets, villages and towns that surround the lake remind one of the triumphs of previous generations. No matter from where you set out you will be met with rounded hills and broad vales which were formed from the terminal moraine of the Ice Age many thousands of years ago. Each road that winds through the hills and valleys was once a mere dirt trail, dusty in drought and rutty in rainy seasons. Today, many of these roads are paved; however, the charms of yesteryear are strong and compelling.

Let’s start our tour in Bewdley, lo-cated on the west end of Rice Lake named in 1833 by William Bancks, who arrived in Canada from Bewdley, England about 1831. It was originally the site of an Indian settle-ment, and was thought to be a stopping place of the Mound Builders when they travelled to Ohio via the Ganaraska trail or portage from Rice Lake to Port Hope. Today, Bewdley caters to the many tourists who come to Rice Lake to enjoy the lake’s fishing and vacation activities.

Going north on Cty. Rd 28 you come to Bailieboro. Until 1861 was called Bloomfield. Bailieboro was named after Bai-lieborough in County Cavan, Ireland, 40 km. west of Dundalk. Turning east at Bailieboro onto Cty. Rd. 2 will take you along the north shore of the Lake.

Hiawatha, situated on the north shore lies at the mouth of the Otonabee River as it flows into Rice Lake. The place was first called the Rice Lake Indian Village. It received its present name from H.R.H. Edward, Prince of Wales, during his 1860 tour. It is named after Henry Wadsworth

Longfellow’s epic poem the Song of Hiawatha, published in 1855. The hero of the poem is the legendary co-creator (the other one being Dekamahwideth) of the League of Five Nations, or Iroquois. He represented all the best features of human accomplishment. Of particular interest here is the lovely, white, framed church which dates back to 1823 when the area includ-ing the church was an early native encamp-ment. Hiawatha is also the point where the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad crossed Rice Lake from Harwood. Today, only part of the rail bed remains visible.

Still travelling on Cty. Rd. 2, the next point of interest is Keene. It was first called Gilchrist’s Mills in 1825 after its founder Dr. John Gilchrist. It was named Otanabee in 1832, and later corrected to Otonabee. Gilchrist renamed it Keene in 1858 for his home town in New Hamp-shire, 40 km. west of Manchester. It is an attractive village bordering the Indian River. One of the first curling clubs in Ontario was formed at Keene in 1861, and for half a century it was a top club in the province.

Continuing east on Cty. Rd. 2 through rolling farmland you will come to Hast-ings, where Rice Lake empties into the Trent River. The village (1874) of Hastings, on the Trent River, was first called Crook’s Rapids, after James Crooks who built a grist mill here in 1827. The mill was sold in 1851 to Henry Fowlds, who named the place Hastings for Flora Muir Campbell, Countess of Ludoun, and the wife of the Marques of Hastings. The first dam on the Trent-Severn Waterway was constructed here in 1838. The village is a port-of-call for visitors

enjoying a boating vacation along the 240 mile Trent-Severn Waterway passage from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.

Heading south on Hwy. 45 from Hast-ings continue to the village of Rose-neath known for its fantastic annual fall fair and historical Roseneath Carousel. This Carousel was built in 1906 at Abilene, Kansas, by C.W. Parker, a manufacturer of amusement rides. Only four like the Roseneath type were known to be made in North America and the number three is stamped on the ring gear. A group of dedi-cated volunteers has worked hard over the years to make the Carousel a working piece of history. You can ride the Carousel – a precious reminder of days gone by in rural Ontario.

South of Roseneath is Alderville, a First Nation, relocated from Quinte Region in 1837. It was established on about 3000 acres stretching from Rice Lake inland over prairie lands and woods to both sides of what is now County Road 45. At the junction of Rice Lake Road and Cty. Rd. 45 is the unique monument the members of the Alderville First Nation erected to honour of all those who fought in the two world wars. Here are excellent curio shops where you can buy well-made handicrafts of leather, bark, feathers and beads.

At this junction turn west onto Cty. Rd. 18 where you will come to Harwood, situated on the south shore of Rice Lake. It was first called Sully by Cobourg entrepre-neur and owner of the steamboat Peme-dash, James Grey Bethune, to honour his illustrious ancestor, Maximilien de Bethune,

Duc de Sully. In 1854 it was later named for Robert Harwood, an early property owner from Lower Canada. In its day it was a bustling community with several inns, a paper mill, and various saw mills, a ferry service running between Cobourg, Sully and Peterborough. Today, only a few signs are visible of a once bustling industry but you can still see evidence of the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad causeway that once crossed Rice Lake. The last train crossed the causeway in 1860. Some partially sub-merged remains of the old causeway from Harwood to Tic Island can still be seen.

As you travel west on Cty. Rd. 18, the next port-of-call is Gores Landing, situated on the south shore of Rice Lake, north of Cobourg. The area was first called Sidey`s Tavern, then Claverton. The present village was named after its founder Thomas Sinclair Gore, a civil engineer from Ireland, who built a plank road from Cobourg to his property on Rice Lake during the 1840s. For over a hundred years, Gore’s Landing was an important canoe and boatbuilding centre. One of the builders, Daniel Herald, is thought to have built one of the first board canoes in the Kawartha region. His canoe known as “Herald’s Patent Cedar Canoe” was a double cedar canoe, planked inside and outside. In the late 1800s this canoe won many medals for Herald at international exhibitions. Today, Gore’s Landing is a port-of-call for boaters as they travel Rice Lake and the Trent-Severn. Throughout your drive around the lake, depending on the time of year, you will experience many breath-taking views of the lake so bring your camera!

It is a phrase most use to describe an unseasonably warm and sunny patch of weather during autumn. The trend is generally observed anywhere from mid-October to early November and normally occurs after the first front. The warm temperatures are usually accompanied by dry, hazy conditions.

An Indian summer is typically caused by a sharp shift in the jet stream from the south to the north. The warm weather may last anywhere from a few days to over a week and may happen multiple times before winter arrives for good.

To be a true Indian summer, the fol-lowing generally agreed upon criteria must be met:

• Temperatures must be above 70 F de-grees for a period of at least seven days or more after the autumnal equinox.

• In Canada, the heat wave must occur after the first frost.

No one really knows how “Indian summer” came to describe such periods. However, if you experience an Indian summer, take advantage of it because you know winter will not be far behind!

What is an Indian Summer?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

The Trent-Severn Waterway The Trent-Severn Waterway is a picturesque 386 km (240 miles) connection between the Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario. The route passes through many locks, including two of the highest hydraulic lift locks in the world, one being Lock 21 in Peterborough. The Otonabee River is short in length and is actually two very different rivers. The upper portion runs from Katchiwanooka Lake to Peterborough’s Little Lake, and is surrounded by limestone and cedar lined shores. The lower level travels along treed shorelines to Rice Lake. The Otonabee River is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway system and flows into Rice Lake. Hastings is where Rice Lake flows into the Trent River. ©

A butter tart tour, how delicious is that? Do you prefer firm, soft and runny? The Butter Tart Tour map describes a great butter tart as one with “...a soft and flaky crust that forms a bowl around the filling. It’s just firm enough to allow you to cradle the tart between your thumb and finger as you gently devour it. A good crust doesn’t explode on the first bite but rather holds the contents of the tart like a spoon as you savour every last nibble”.
