A WORD FROM THE
Ihope all of our school community– students (past and present),parents, teachers, Board membersand friends – enjoy reading our
2017 Yearbook and reliving thehighlights of what has been a veryexciting and busy year in WoodbrookCollege. I would like to extend mythanks and appreciation to ourYearbook editor Janet O’Brien foranother fabulous publication. Janethas put a huge amount of effort andtime into her role as Editor of theYearbook and I think the standard ofthe publication again this year istestimony to that.
I would like to pay tribute to all ofthe students and their parents for theircommitment to the school over thelast twelve months. These are difficulttimes for everyone, but despite this, parents have prioritised theirchildren’s education and doneeverything they can to ensure theyhave uniforms, books and all otherequipment. This is much appreciatedby all of the staff. I would also like tothank the students for the effort theyhave put into their classes and workthroughout the year and hope thatthey all, especially the examinationstudents, will reap the rewards theydeserve.
2016/2017 was of course our firstfull school year in our new buildingunder our new name WoodbrookCollege and as a co-educationalschool. I would like to thank all of thestudents, their parents and the staff forall of your patience and co-operationas we underwent so many changesover the last two years. Thanks to allof your efforts, the changes have beenseamless and we have come throughthe year a bigger, stronger and more
their lives whether it is starting the thirdlevel course of their choice, starting outin work, taking up an apprentiship ortaking time out to travel. Whatever paththey take, I wish them, on behalf of thewhole school community here atWoodbrook College, the very best ofluck and success now and into thefuture. To our present pupils, I wish themall a very successful year and hope that2017/2018 brings them success both intheir studies and in all of their otherpursuits.
I would like to thank the parents whowork so hard on the Parents Associationfor all the help they have provided atschool functions and other events andfor the tremendous fundraising effortsthey have put in. It is much appreciated.I would make a special appeal to otherparents, especially those of our youngerstudents, to consider getting involvedwith the Parents Association therebyensuring that this great work continues.I would also like to pay tribute to ouradministrative and ancillary staff –Nieves, Mary, Carol, Liz and Darren – forall their work behind the scenes makingsure that the school can functionproperly as well as to our Special NeedsAssistant Joy for her work with thestudents in her care.
In conclusion, may I especiallywelcome our new 1st year students andwish them an enjoyable and rewardingtime in Woodbrook College. I invite themto join with the existing students and theentire school community as we journeythrough the next academic year, guidedat all times by the principles of ourfounder, Edmund Rice.
JOHN TAYLOR PRINCIPAL
| WOODBROOK COLLEGE YEARBOOK 20172
Iwould like to start by thanking all those who contributedin any way to the production of this Yearbook especiallyMs. O’ Brien who brought it all together to be the fantasticpiece of work you are now reading.
This academic year has been our first full year in our newbuilding and the biggest and probably the best change alsohappened with girls now being members of our schoolcommunity. Those brave 1st year girls who came in a little bitunsure last August have now become fully fledged membersof our school community. I would just like to congratulate themon how seamlessly (even though they are totally outnumberedat the moment) they have adapted to their new environment.Well done girls!!
I would like to thank all staff who have given generously oftheir time to organise and lead all the varied and wonderfulextracurricular activities without which the school would be amuch poorer place. These have included debating, lunchtimeand afterschool clubs, a huge variety of sports (the latest
addition being cricket), Gaisce overnight trip, London trip andTY play. The photographic and written evidence in thisYearbook clearly backs this up. I know from talking to thestudents that they really do appreciate what you have donefor them. Well done and thanks to you.
I would also like to thank the Prefects who helped outduring the parent teacher meetings to provide a nicewelcome, directions and refreshments for parents andteachers. Also the Parents Council who gave generously oftheir time during the year.
Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Bergin (who acted up asDeputy Principal) and Mr. Kelly (who took over my classes)when I was absent due to my leg injury.
It only remains for me to wish those sitting the Leaving andJunior Certificate exams the very best of luck in June andhopefully you will all achieve what you are capable of.

The prefects provide leadership to the student body in the school throughthe good example they set in their behaviour both inside and outside ofthe classroom. They have a vital role to play in the life of the school. Theyhelp to prepare the rooms and corridors for parent teacher meetings(PTM’s). They provide refreshments for parents who are attending a PTM.They also assist with other school events that may arise from time to time.
Well done and thanks for all that you have done!MR MURPHY
A WORD FROM ECKENER ADIZON - HEAD BOYYou wouldn’t believe if I said six years passes by quickly, but it does.It feels as if 1st year camp back in 2011 was only last week. Eventhough time has flown, there’s no doubt that a lot has happenedsince the first September I entered the school.
We have all changed and matured over the years. Thanks to thestaff and the new school, the environmentin which we developed in was positive andsupportive. In Woodbrook College there isa great sense of camaraderie betweenstaff and students.
School for me didn’t always have to bea place for strict learning and following theguidelines to the dot, it was also a place offun and friendship. Woodbrook allowedstudents to be themselves, to follow theirhobbies and passions. To reach their ownpotential through their own hard work. I’dbe lying if I said being in Woodbrook hasn’tchanged me. The experiences, skills andmemories I’ve gained here have made meinto a better person.
Like many others here, I am a more intelligent and confidentstudent. Not only that but I’ve formed friendships with many otherstudents, friendships that will hopefully last for a long time aftersecondary school. It’s been a privilege to be given the title HeadBoy of 2016/2017, to represent the students of Woodbrook and theschool itself.
On behalf of the students of Woodbrook, I’d like to thank all pastand present staff of Woodbrook College, for all the work they havedone to help us achieve our fullest potential. Woodbrook has abright future ahead, and each student too.
I wish the best for all the students, my friends, and the staff inthe years to come. Thank you and good luck.

The cross country and athletics team was very strong thisyear and were unlucky not to get further than the qualifiers. The cross country event took place in Dublin and the EastLeinster competition in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. There werestrong performance by the athletes that participated but nonewere strong enough to qualify for the Leinster finals.
In the recent, East Leinster Track and Field competition, theteam did well but were unfortunately outrun. However, allathletes had commendable performances. Hopefully, everyone will come back next year fitter and stronger thanbefore.

It has been a good year for the firstyear football team. The team startedwell with getting through the first roundof the Leinster 5 a side tournament butwe unfortunately lost in the secondround. We suffered a tough loss in theLeinster 11 a side cup away at Finglas;before losing our two league games inShanganagh Park.
Our final match was the LeinsterShield semi-final. We played away toColáiste Chiaráin in Lexlip. We went 1-0up after a Dylan Kavanagh free kickand went 2-1 down in the second halfbefore Dylan equalised late in thematch. The game went to extra timeand we found ourselves behind 3-2before another dramatic Dylan

As it was the first years of girls in Woodbrook College we didn’thave many players but as the weeks went on our team grew. These are the players who took part in football; Toni-Marie Ceno(forward), Adriana Demcenco (defence), Niamh Carry McLeavy(midfield) Mya Davy (defence), Alannah Dunphy-Finn (midfield),Holly Keane (defence), Aleena Jose (goalkeeper) and myselfSophie Kennedy (defence). We all train on Thursdays after schoolwith our coaches Ms Doyle and Ms Ring.
Out of this football season our top goal-scorer was Toni.Throughout the year, we played in two football tournaments inwhich we came 2nd in the first and 1st in the second tournament. We also played a friendly against Loreto Bray. We are all sothankful for the support from our classmates and the teachersespecially Ms Doyle and Ms Ring for without whom our teamwould not have come together as it did.
We hope to see the team grow with new players throughout theyears of Woodbrook College and all girls are encouraged to join.
equaliser saved us. We had a fewchances to win the game but couldn’thit the target again; so the match wentto penalties. Dylan, Evan and Toni
scored their kicks, but we had a fewmisses: so despite some great savesfrom Lorcan in goal, we were knockedout of the cup.
1st YEAR GIRLS
The U-15 year soccer team had unluckyresults but performed very well throughoutthe season. The Wicklow-Wexford leaguecampaign saw the team lose two tightgames to CBS Arklow and ColáisteCraobh Abhann, 4-2 and 3-1 respectively. The Leinster cup again saw a tight 3-2defeat in a tense game to CBS Arklow.
In spite of the results, players showeddedication in their training and awillingness to learn and improve theirgame. A continued commitment by theplayers to training and improving theirgame will see them be competitive in theLeinster Cup and Wicklow-Wexford leagueas they go through 2nd and 3rd year. Finally, a thanks to all the players for theircommitment and to school managementfor facilitating a team to be proud of asthey represented the school withteamwork, skill and humility.

Our first encounter was against St.David’s and we had high hopesheading into the game. Our playerof the year Jamie Nelson put us 1-0up 10 minutes into the game. MarcPerry extended our lead just beforehalf-time with a great finish to makeit 2-0.
St. David's managed to pull oneback soon after which put us undera bit of pressure. Considering howtight the game was we managed tofinish strongly with the final result inour favour as the game ended 5-2.A well deserved mention must goto Marc Perry who scored 4 goals.
In our next game we faced a verystrong Coláiste Chraobh Abhannteam. They put up a good fight butfortunately for us we won 2-0. Goalsfrom Marc Perry and Jake Dalygave us our second win of thecampaign.
In the semi-final of the Wicklow/Wexford we came up against a veryphysical Wexford CBS side.
We had a slow start but once we gota feel for the game we were able to takethe lead through David Power with anexceptional free kick. Wexford thenequalised in the blink of an eye due toour lack of concentration and
awareness. Wexford finished the matchwell and caught us on a quick counterattack which decided the game andunfortunately meant that our season wasover.
Even though we could not make itinto the final it was a thoroughlyenjoyable year for us all.
DAVID WEBSTER TRAINING SESSION

This year Woodbrook College formed their very firstcricket team. 1st and 2nd years were encouraged toplay, but they weren't the only ones. Two amazing ladsfrom 4th and 5th year also joined in. We played twomatches against Presentation College Bray. Both werereally great matches and everybody played very well.We trained on Wednesday after school and everyonelearned something new in each training session. Inone of our training sessions we even had a formerplayer from the Leinster cricket team.
The team captain was Leslin Vinod, who did a superjob leading and guiding us.
Well done to everyone for forming WoodbrookCollege’s first ever cricket team! It was a greatexperience for everybody who took part, and we can'twait for next year. There's no doubt that even more players will join our fantastic team.
We would like to thank Mr. Cullen for training us and organising all our matches.JAMES McGRANE ERO, AND THE CRICKET TEAM

Monday and Tuesday sees the gym block-booked forbasketball training every week. The numbers have growneach week and we now have a huge amount of committedstudents who train and play for fun and to improve on thedifferent aspects of the game. It has been great to watchthem build skills in dribbling, shooting and gamemanagement.
The teams competed in the Dublin leagues and both got tosemi-finals which is a huge achievement considering thereare no junior clubs in the area. Many players have nowsigned up to proper clubs in South Dublin and will be a greatresource to incoming players as the school grows. Welldone to all involved. A special mention to the Senior andJunior Players of the Year which were GV Ludovice (5th) andAlan Piegza (2nd).

Every Friday during TY, Mr.O’Brien arranged for variousguests to come in and talk to usor demonstrate a new skill. Theguests included a local GP,pilates teacher, a Guard, JohnO’Shea from Goal, a fencinginstructor, a first aid instrutorand a member of AlcoholicsAnnonoymous.
The talks/activities werereally interesting and welearned loads. The fencinginstructor taught us the basicsof fencing. He brought in all theprotective clothing and showedus moves such as offensive anddefensive. The pilates teachershowed us how to do differentstretches and exercises. Thiswas really enjoyable as welearned to work muscles thatwe didn’t know we had! A localGP talked to us about generalhealth. He brought inequipment to measure our lungcapacity. He also gave us somepractical information on mentalhealth.
My favourite speaker duringthe year was the Sergeant fromthe bomb disposal unit. He toldus some really interestingstories about his time in thearmy.
We are really grateful to allthe people who came in andspoke to us and made TY sucha rich and varied experience.

TY ACTIVITIES AND SPEAKERS
As part of our TY programme, every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, the twoTY classes had social outreach which is a module where students go to placessuch as a school, nursing home or charity shop. I went to a Charity shop on BrayMain Street for my social outreach before Christmas and from the New Year untilthe end of the school year I went to Cuala Montessori on Cuala Road in Bray.
Some of the other places where students did their social outreach were; St.Cronan’s B.N.S, Enable Ireland, and Fassaroe Youth Centre.
The module is a valuable part of TY as it keeps students active and involvedin the community. It is a very rewarding module as you get to feel good aboutyourself that you have given back to the community by helping others aroundyou. I benefitted hugely from my social outreach in Cuala Montessori as I havean interest in becoming a teacher. I got to see first hand what it would be likeworking with children.
Overall it was a great module in the year and I am glad we were given thisopportunity.

This year’s TY Drama Production was theplay Hatchet by Heno Magee. Auditionstook place before Christmas and a total castof 16 students took part in the play withanother 13 students involved in set designand backstage.
Students performed a thrilling matineewhich was enjoyed by all the student bodyand also one night-time performance forfamily and friends. The production wasdirected by Ms Syron and Mr O'Brien.
This stark but realistic play was set ininner city Dublin in the early 1970's. It’scentral character was Hatchet Bailey, played by Jamie Byrne, a tough, violentcreature whose life strives to escape the
poverty of his environment. It offered us afrightening picture of violence but in themidst of this teaches students andaudiences alike powerful lessons aboutcultural pressures and expectation.
Students involved in the production willnever forget Hatchets insightful advicegiven in Act 3..."A man goes out to find hisenemies he finds no friends...now a mangoes out to find his friends and he finds noenemies."
Overall, I think everyone enjoyed theplay, because it was a new experience formost of us, and even the people whoweren’t in the play made an importantcontribution by making the set.

One of the new subjects we triedin TY was Mini-Company. This iswhere you think up of a businessidea in a group and develop it untilyou reach the point where you areready to sell and hopefully make aprofit.
Mini-Company introduced us tomany business skills such as idea generation, market research,
marketing, preparation of financial accounts, report writing and presentation skills.Just before Christmas we held a trade fair in the school. This gave us the
opportunity to sell our products/services to the rest of the school. Some of thebusinesses included survival bracelets, headphone protectors and car washes.
Each Mini-Company had to write up a report and present a Powerpointpresentation to Mr. Taylor. Mr. Taylor then selected 2 teams to representWoodbrook College in the Dun Laoghaire finals. The winning team was Sigma, made up of Ralph Lacap, Olegs Maksimovs and Fernando Marquez who soldheadphone protectors. In 2nd place was Luke Murray who designed and madebespoke wooden stationary holders. Both companies did the school proud in the

I also got to see how much of a tightknit family all the workers are upthere. I also worked with the HSE.Other students had some other veryinteresting places of work such asScott Drew on the set of the Vikings,Elvis Karoblis in Laptop Lab, LewisKinlan in Bray Head Golf Club, RyanO'Callaghan in Noah’s Ark Restaurant,

Each year we bring our adventurous cohort of TY students to London as part of thebrilliant TY Programme. They got an in-depth guided tour of London City which gavea really clear understanding of how the city developed from a Roman centre of tradeto a world city of finance and culture. The trip also involved a training session withWatford Football Club who then invited the guys to join them for the Premiershipgame against Swansea City at the Vicarage Road Stadium. We rounded off the tripwith an excursion to Thorpe Park to experience the roller-coasters, water featuresand high-jink adventure rides. Each student was a brilliant representative of theschool and we look forward to seeing how their leadership skills and sense ofcommunity stand to them as they begin their Leaving Certificate cycle.

On Wednesday 14th at 6:45 we went onthe train to Achill Island for a 3 day trip.
When we arrived at the Gaeltacht, wewere assigned our houses and quicklyunpacked before our first activity whichwas surfing. This was great fun. A lot of usnever realised how difficult it is to get upon the board. After the surfing we did cliffdiving, which was an interesting and funexperience along with searching throughcaves and swimming, we also jumped offsmall cliffs. After that we went back to thehouse we hung our wet clothes out to dryand just hung around each others roomsuntil dinner and then later went to a halljust up the road and did rock climbing.
The next morning we were kayakingwhich I think it would be an under-statement to call exhausting, but it was agood laugh. We had to go around somecliffs and into a small bay-like area andwhen we got there we could get out andtop each other over and mess around for10 minutes before we had to go back tothe pier. Here we went pier jumping intothe water before heading in to getchanged.
The next day we went bog snorkelling. For most of us this was the highlight ofthe trip. It was very messy but a brilliantlaugh and a great way to end ourfantastic trip to Achill.

The year started with a focus on water as we begin ourattempt to earn our third flag. We started off with TYPicasso putting together an Action Plan based on thethemes of Litter and Waste Energy and Water. Weconducted a review of our consumption and set sometargets around our water use and the new taps that wereinstalled in the school which were taking a long time toswitch off!
We followed this activity up by attending An Taisce’sAnnual Water Forum in Dublin City Centre where we cameup with some ideas to bring back to Woodbrook and tryout.
In November we had a momentous event when our firstfemale representatives from the Green Committeeattended the 8th Annual Dun Laoghaire Rathdown EcoConference. Valeria, Ella and Mya did an amazing job atrepresenting Woodbrook College, as did all of the boystoo!
In early 2017 TY Rembrandt attended the Irish FilmInstitute and watched the documentary Atlantic, which
highlights the challenges facedby Irish fishermen and otherswho exploit our coasts.Afterwards there was aquestion and answer sessionwith the Director Risteard ÓDomhnail which was veryinteresting.
Our next activity was a TreePlanting session in Shankillwhere TY Rembrandt wereinvolved in planting an orchardin Shanganagh Park. Despitethe cool temperatures the boys
did great work and were finished in no time, theyeven got their picture taken with Cllr. Cormac Devlinand made an appearance in the Wicklow Times.
Throughout this year we have begun a newpartnership with SAGE who are a Shankill basedenvironmental group. Thanks to Willie and hiscolleagues we were able to go on a veryinteresting nature walk in May to look at the hiddenforest on Bray beach which can only be seen at lowtide and we learned a lot about the coastal erosionof Shanganagh Cliffs and the flora and fauna of thelocal area.
We finished off the year with the GreenCommittee running a Water Awareness campaign inrelation to the amount of water that we should usein the shower and during Sports Day the everpopular Tinfoil Toss was held again.
All of this work is only possible with the hardwork and commitment of the students whovolunteer and give up their breaks to attendmeetings, to them and all of the teachers whosupport the Green Committee I say thank you. Hardto believe another year has passed! Hopefully thistime next year we will be raising Flag number threeon the flag pole outside.

Better yet, think of all the songs that’ll be written:‘Fridge Killed the Ozone Laya…’
Can’t waitFor the bloody thing to happen already.
Boulderstown was a tired old town, as old asthe giant boulder it was founded beside;which had now been reduced to dust. Painthad flaked like snow, and weeds dominatedthe drainpipes. At the end of a short cul de sacroad lived Terry Kite.
Terry was a troubled young boy. His facewas paler than the flaking paint of his house, and there was always something on his mind. His hair was thinning and split at the ends likeshredded paper. The ten-year-old had nofriends, but regularly turned to his consciencefor entertainment. He was his own best friend, which did not bother him at all.
As with many aspects of his later life, TerryKite struggled with school. There was a jokegoing around about him. It was so common infact that it could be published as a nurseryrhyme:
‘Terry Kite, O so white, Stands out like a starat night!’
‘Hey!’ It was Tom. A twelve-year-old boyfrom the older year. His brown eyes weresharp and he was quite tall for his age.
‘You’re that Kite kid aren’t ya?! Ha ha!’sniggered Tom. There was no audible replyfrom Terry, who was standing in the middle ofthe dull road, with a football at his feet. Tom,seeing the ball, snatched it from Terry withimpressive skill; he was the captain of theschool football team.
‘Come on Terry,’ challenged Tom. ‘Just tryand take it from me.’
After a moment of sheer silence, Terrywhispered ‘fine…’ in one heavy breath. Heapproached Tom, one unsure step afteranother. At this point, Terry would haveallowed the bully to keep it, providing he hadthe confidence.
When the young, pale-faced boy finallyreached kicking distance of Tom, thesportsman dashed away. To Terry’s slowreflexes, he could have sworn Tom hadteleported away, with the ball still at his feet.‘Come on!’ screamed Tom at the top of hisbreaking voice. ‘Try a little harder and I mightjust enjoy myself.’ Seeing Tom taunting himwith his football, Terry built up the courage tocharge at him, in a pathetic wild rage.
A smirk formed on Tom’s thick face. ‘That’smore like it.’ In one lightning quick move, Tomparried the screaming child’s assault, andshoved him to the ground; a move that wouldbe rewarded with a red card, had this been afootball match. A soft ‘thud’ was heard asTerry’s feeble body made contact with the
black tarmac. ‘You’re the only Kite that willnever fly, remarked Tom. Before leaving, hewalloped the ball as hard as he could. As heshuffled away, Tom seemed pleased with hisperformance.
Noticing that the bully had vanished, Terryrolled onto his back and gazed at the greysky. Luckily for him the road was so unusedthat he could have slept there for the night.Terry sighed as the first drops of a heavyshower of rain hit his thin cheeks. ‘No…, hethought when he realised where his ball hadlanded. He stumbled to his small feet andmade his way to the ‘creepy house’.
Next door to Terry stood the ‘creepyhouse’. A derelict wooden mansion with morerotting wood than a discount builder’s yard. The veranda was non-existent, and the stenchof damp wood and dead flowers wasoverwhelming. The owner ironically was acarpenter, who had restored the dwelling toits former glory. He has been missing for fiveyears now.
The garage, located to the right of theabandoned building was structurally sound.Made entirely of concrete blocks, its onlyweakness was the rusty iron shutter. Spooky. There was an air of death-tinged despairabout the place. This was not a goodexperience for Terry. The only way onto theroof was up a black PVC pipe. Well, it lookedblack from a distance, but it was turning whitewith age and weakness, like stretched outchewing gum. In a world as small as Terry’s,the decision to climb up was a decisivemoment in his life.
For once, his fear had given Terry theenergy to get it over with. He approached thepipe. With a deep breath, Terry began hisascent; slowly but surely, and with calculatedaccuracy.
CRASH! Silence. It was as if time hadstopped to allow the red river to flow freelyfrom Terry’s shattered skull. Blu-Tac wouldhave fixed that pipe to the wall better than thestumpy nails. The PVC pipe plummeted to theground and shattered like glass. No birds flewaway. No dogs were heard barking.
As the world grew dim through Terry’s darkeyes, he shook his head in agony. But it wasonly making things worse, as the woundbecome covered in cold moss from the colderconcrete. He reached out. It seemed pointless. But to Terry Kite of Boulderstown, it was hisfinal salute to the world. The only thing Terry’sbest friend couldn’t do was call for help.

From November 2nd to 5th some of the 3rd, TYand 5th Year students went on a trip to Munich,Germany. During the trip we visited a lot oflandmarks and interesting places.
First was a walking trip of Munich. Our tourguide brought us around various locations in thetown and gave a brief description of the town’shistory. Afterwards, we visited the NaziDocumentation Centre. It was quite fascinatingto learn about the rise of Nazism and the buildup of World War II.
Thursday saw us visiting DachauConcentration Camp. Upon entering thegrounds you get an eerie feeling because ofwhat happened. Dachau was more of a labourcamp than an extermination camp but theconditions were no better. Later in the day wevisited ‘Galaxy Waterpark’ which is the biggestwater park in Europe. It was amazing! It reallytook our minds off what happened earlier in theday but I will never forget standing in the gaschamber and crematorium. That night we visitedthe Olympic Park. The buildings have beenthere since the Olympics were held there in1972. We went up the 291m tall tower andobserved stunning night-time scenes of Munich.
The following day, we took the U-Bahn to theAllianz Arena. While there, we got acomprehensive tour of the stadium. We sat inthe stands, stood in the changing rooms andlooked down the prestigious players tunnel.Next, we entered BMW Welt (BMW World) amassive showroom of lots of BMW models, mostof which you could get in/on. It was thoroughlyenjoyable sitting in such beautifully designedcars. That was just the start; we then visited theBMW museum where we went on a journeythrough time from the origins of BMW in 1916 tothe present day. What a journey it was.
Our final day involved a short ramble aroundMunich doing any shopping if necessary andexploring the town itself.
Overall it was a marvellous experience thatwas enjoyed by all. I would definitely go againif the opportunity arose.

Chefket ist ein deutsche Rapper. Ich bin in Oktober auf seinem Konzertgegangen. Meine Lehrerin hat die Karten gekauft und ich bin mit meinerKlasse gefahren. Es war im Opium Zimmer in Dublin. Das Show dauerteeine Stunde.

The Student Council in our school plays a big role in how thestudents voice their opinion. Each year group elects 2-3representatives who can bring up any issues that may occur.
The Student Council this year was particularly important with theintroduction of girls to the school. It was important for Mr Taylor toget feedback from students, especially girls, on how the schoolcould be changed. This year there were quite a few changes made.
We met on Mondays every 2-3 weeks in the conference roomwith Mr Taylor, where we voiced our opinions and put forwardproposals.
This year due to vandalism Mr Taylor was going to close theupstairs toilet, however the Student Council proposed making theupstairs toilets senior only. This small change addressed the issue. We also organised more bins in the school, we had a major role inuniform changes for girls in the new school year and we arecurrently discussing the length of the 11 o’clock break.
We hope to continue to make a difference in the new school year.CAIN CARSON

The LCVP (Leaving Certificate VocationalProgramme) is an extra subject that LeavingCertificate students can sign up to do. You mustmeet the requirements by doing a combinationof 2 specific subjects and involves a mixture ofproject and exam work. The written exam itselfis worth 40% of the total grade and the projectwork is 60%. For our projects we had tocomplete a portfolio of 6 different projects. Themandatory options are a CV, CareerInvestigation, Enterprise Action Plan andSummary Report. Optional items are EnterpriseReport, Diary of Work Experience and RecordedInterview.
We began with our own CV and thenconducted a career investigation on a job thatwe would like to do in the future which I foundvery beneficial.
In March we had to organise and run our ownevents for the Enterprise Report. My group andI ran the Teacher Sponge Toss. It went very well, was good fun and it was a great way to give usevent management experience that will surelybe of aid in later life.
ByADAM TILLEY
Our recorded interview was a very goodexperience as it put us all at ease and gave usa chance to see what it’s like to be in a real lifesituation. We also had the added benefit ofseeing what worked and what didn’t and beingable to change it.
Some students decided to do a Diary of WorkExperience which saw them partake in threedays outside of school time and complete workexperience which they all seemed to enjoy andfind very useful.
In May we carried out an investigation ofBray, to discover more about the town for ourSummary Report. We surveyed differentbusinesses and received a talk from the localtourism office which was very helpful and gaveus a good insight into Bray.
These tasks required us to be creative, resourceful and be able to work as part of ateam. The course itself was able to help usimprove our skills, learn new ones and help uswith our chances as jobseekers by providing uswith information and experience for the workingworld. The theory itself is very practical as well
as useful. We’re taught material that wouldn’tbe covered in other classes such as the rightsand responsibilities of an employee, how tobetter deal with job interviews as well as otherthings.
All in all, the LCVP course was very useful aswell as beneficial. It was quite enjoyable andprovided me as well as everyone else withuseful skills that we learned practically ratherthan just reading and writing in a classroom. Iwould thoroughly recommend LCVP to anyonethat is able to do it.

Any chance to experience learning outside ofthe classroom and to work with primary andsecondary sources is a young historiansdream. This year we brought the entire groupof 1st years to Ferrycarrig National HeritagePark to climb inside and explore Iron Agetombs and settlements.
The trip saw the students move fromAncient Celtic Ireland through to EarlyChristian Ireland and to finish up by climbingon-board a Viking ship.
All the boys and girls really enjoyed the tripand it will be a great resource to them duringtheir Junior Cycle History programme.

2nd Year TripsOur year is headed up by Ms. O’Gorman and threetutors: Mr. Cullen, Mr. Connaughton and Mr. Fitzpatrick.
The students have had a really important yearwhere each have grown and developed into younggentlemen. As a reward the boys have been broughton two brilliant excursions to Bray Head and to thePhoenix Park. These trips really help the boys to bondand see their hard-work and diligence beingappreciated by their Year Head and Form Tutors. The Phoenix Park was a highlight which includedorienteering, pizza and fun all round.

On a bright and sunny Wednesday morning atthe end of May the corridors of WoodbrookCollege were very quiet. As a reward for thehard work put in by all years, Yearheadsorganised to take their groups on variousdifferent trips such as Jumpzone, Footee,Phoenix Park and Bowling.
Great fun was had by all and it was a lovelyopportunity for students to let their hair downbefore the exams.
