A Word from Father Rick
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The New Year of 2017 is well underway. I
look forward to working with the new parish
council and the newly elected officers: Jon
Kennedy (president), Nanette Gomez (vice pres-
ident), Steve Arsenault (secretary), John Simon
(treasurer), and Bill Clemons (assistant treasur-
er).
We began the year with a beautiful Theophany
celebration on January 5 and 6 including the
first ever outdoor water blessing of the Missis-
sippi River at Hidden Falls Park. Despite the
extreme cold several faithful attended with my-
self, Fr. George Dokos of St. Mary Greek and
Fr. Mircea Vasiu of St. Mary Romanian. We did
the blessing service near the parking lot on the
upper bank, then we descended the ice boulders
and sheets on the lower bank and out onto the
frozen ice of the river. We needed to get as
close as safely possible in order to toss the cross
into open water and retrieve it. Unlike other
warmer water blessings, we retrieved the cross
with rope, not a person. We look forward to
doing it again next year.
We also look forward to our annual God-
parent/Godchild Sunday on February 5th this
year. As usual godparents and godchildren are
encouraged to attend the divine liturgy together
and, if prepared appropriately, to receive holy
communion together. Then, afterwards, to share
fellowship in the social hall. Please spread the
word and plan to come!
We also look forward to our annual GOYAL
Family Basketball Tournament hosted by our
sister parish of Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox
Church in Rochester, Minnesota on February 10-12. We have three teams registered (men, boys,
joy) and they’ve already started practicing
(Sundays: kids 12:30 at St. Paul Academy on Goodrich Ave.; men 2:30pm at St. Mary Greek).
We are encouraging everyone (in addition to
players and parents) to attend the Saturday
evening banquet on Feb.11th to join in the fel-
lowship and support our sister parish. See an-
nouncements elsewhere for specific registration
info.
Hard to believe but we are also anticipating
Great and Holy Lent, which begins on Clean/
Pure Monday February 27th. It’s always good to
plan ahead for fasting, confession and worship
routines. I strongly encourage parents and chil-
dren to attend at least one weekday Lenten ser-
vice every week. There are plenty to choose
from including Sunday Lenten Vespers at vari-
ous churches, Monday Compline, Wednesday
Presanctified Liturgy, Friday Akathist/
Salutations and Saturday Vespers. There are
plenty of readings to do and it’s a good way to
get everyone involved in a less-intimidating
environment versus Sunday morning liturgy.
With Lent brings new educational opportuni-
ties including our annual Lenten Lectures and
Lenten Retreat. This year ’s Wednesday
theme will be “Modern Heresies” and the Friday
theme will be “The Torah/Pentateuch.” Our
Lenten retreat will be led by Fr. Barnabas Pow-
ell, pastor of Sts. Raphael, Nicholas & Irene
Greek Orthodox Church in Cummings, Georgia.
You may remember Fr. Barnabas from many
years ago, before he was Orthodox, when he
was Chuck Powell working for the Orthodox
Christian Network and Come Receive the Light
radio program and travelled to the Twin Cities a
couple times. Anyways, our theme which is not
quite finalized, will be “Normal Orthodoxy &
Healthy Parish.”
Finally, please avail yourselves of the priestly
pastoral service. If you are not feeling well,
whether in soul or body, come for Holy Unc-
tion. Make an appointment for Holy Confession. If you’re going to be in the hospital for whatev-
er reason, let me know and I will try to visit
there or perhaps after your return home. I visit
the home-bound and shut-ins regularly two to
three times per year including before Christmas
and Holy Week. If additional visitations are de-

Fr. Duane Pedersen celebrated his 25th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood on December 18th at St. George Antiochian Church. Bishop Anthony of the Antiochian Archdi-ocese was in attendance, pictured along with Fr. Tom Begley, pastor of the parish. Fr. Rick was invited to make a brief presentation on behalf of the Minnesota Orthodox Chris-
tian Prison Ministry, since Fr. Duane is considered to be one of the founders of the national OCPM.

sired, please call me to schedule one. I am available for counseling by appointment at mutually convenient times. Please call office or
email me to schedule. My preferred mode of non-emergency communication is the church voicemail and/or email. Please use my cell
phone, including texting, only for emergency or last minute necessary communication.
Thank you for your prayerful support of our parish. May St. George intercede for us all!
Blessed Triodion and Lent!

Priest & Communion By Father Rick
A question was raised recently, “Can priests refuse communion
to anyone?” The simple answer is yes but a better answer is found
on the Orthodox Church of America website:
“With regard to whether or not the parish priest can refuse to give
an individual Communion, it must be understood that the priest is
the guardian of the Holy Mysteries which, as the Holy Fathers
warn, can be to our condemnation as well as our salvation. Techni-
cally a priest does not “refuse” to give Communion to someone; it
would be more correct to say that the priest must discern, recog-
nize, and respond to any circumstances by which an individual
has cut off himself or herself from the Eucharist or any other sacra-
ment. In other words it is not the priest who “refuses” to offer the
sacrament but, rather, the circumstance in which the person is in-
volved which makes it impossible for the priest to offer the sacra-
ment.” (https://oca.org/questions/sacramentconfession/proof-of-
confession)
It’s been a very rare occasion that I have refused anyone at the
chalice even though they are obviously not prepared. I would prefer
not to do that and embarrass anyone in front of the congregation.
That’s why we publish guidelines in our bulletin and I occasionally
make public announcements or references in the sermon. One of
the worst things a person can do is receive communion in lazy ig-
norance or knowing defiance, especially instructing our children to
violate the instructions/guidelines given by the priest. I try to ad-
dress these situations personally/confidentially and if I notice re-
peated unpreparedness after doing so, then I will refuse that person
at the chalice if they approach.
Receiving the Eucharist is extremely serious business. That’s
why the Apostle Paul warns us: 27Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord
in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood[a]of the Lord. 28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the
bread and drink of the cup. 29For he who eats and drinks in an un-
worthy manner[b] eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discern-ing the Lord’s[c]body” (1Corinthians 11:27-29)
Preparation for Communion This raises the additional question of how do I prepare for com-
munion? As is noted in our bulletin every Sunday:
Note to Orthodox about Holy Communion: Receiving the
Body and Blood of Christ is one of the most Holy experiences
for a Christian in order to be granted the forgiveness of sins
and everlasting life. We are never worthy to partake of Divine
Nature. Yet, it is essential that we prepare ourselves for this
sacred Communion by constant prayer, reading the Scriptures,
regular fasting and periodic Confession. At a minimum, we
should fast all morning before Communion, arrive at the begin-
ning of Liturgy, and come for Confession at least once a year.
In addition, we should not have separated ourselves from the
Church through serious sin. Otherwise, please refrain from
Communion to avoid “judgment…not discerning the Lord’s
body” (1Cor. 11:29). Contact Fr. Rick for pastoral guidance.

Of course, these are general minimum guidelines but the best way to determine one’s personal prepar-
edness is to be in a relationship of spiritual/confessional guidance with the local parish priest. In this
context, the spiritual father can give appropriate and specific directions for preparing to receive the
Holy Eucharist and also advise when it is appropriate to refrain from Holy Communion for a time in
order to be better prepared in the future. Spiritual direction can be given outside of the Sacrament of
Confession but to be better prepared see the “Preparation for Confession” guidelines on our parish
website under “Pastor’s Corner.”

Thank you! to everyone who made
stewardship contributions in 2016 and
helped us exceed our goal of $237,000.
Let us continue to grow and mature in
our personal giving to God and His
Church!
Giving Options w/ Tax Advantage:
There are some simple ways to make
stewardship contributions with signifi-
cant tax savings. One is to transfer ap-
preciated stock to the church claiming
full value of donation and avoiding
capital gains tax. 2016 has been a very
good year in the market and this may
be a simple, easy way to fulfill your
stewardship pledge early in the year.
Transfer forms are available by request.
We recommend that everyone consult
an accounting and/or tax professional
for the best personal advice. Thank
you!
Recycle Icons- please do not throw
icons, including printed Sunday Bulle-
tins, in the trash. They are holy and
sacred images of the saints. Please re-
turn them to the church office or social
hall to be given to those in need.

Dear Saint George Parishioners:
I wanted to give you an update on our progress in 2016 after our year-end meeting in December. The committee decided to con-
tinue with our list of charities from 2015 and include in 2016 the Lynn Olson Medical Crisis Program, a charity which Father Rick
serves on the board. We also initiated the M&B college student essay program and awarded Matt Simon $800 for the winning
essay. We received a total of 3 essays from students in our parish this year and we hope to continue with the essay contest next
year. I want to thank Steve and Minda Arsenault for serving on the essay contest committee to help select the winning essay.
We served 6 Loaves & Fishes meals in 2016 and successfully transitioned our team to the new location at St. Matthews. Our at-
tendance waned for a few months but we improved our number of volunteers in the last two months, with the December meal
reaching 18 volunteers. We also served 2 Focus MN meals and we plan to host 3-4 in 2017 with 2 meals already on the calendar
for early 2017. I want to thank all the volunteers who help serve meals throughout the year, especially our cooks (Dino & George
Contolatis, Sue and Richard Gnetz, Lampros Petanitis and Anastasia Mastrogiorgis). It’s a great cause and we couldn’t feed over
100 people each meal without the help of our cooks and volunteers.
We also had a very strong fundraising year. We raised approximately $4,823 with four fundraisers, the monthly Silent Auction,
the Union Depot Bake Sale, the UACC Holiday Festival and the 2nd Annual Minnesota United soccer outing. I want to thank An-
gela Mortari for organizing the monthly silent auction and our dedicated bakers, Angela, Anastasia Mastrogiorgis, Stella Hofren-
ning, and Irene Loudas for representing our Church and our culture with their baked goods across the metro area.
I also want to thank AHEPA for their generous donation of $200 to the adopt-a-family program this year, their second year in a
row they are sponsoring the program at the $200 level. I also want to thank all the individual contributors who either donated
money or bought gifts for families in need during the holidays.
After meal and fundraising expenses, the M&B had a balance of $8,466 available to distribute to our identified charities by end of
year 2016. Our Focus MN Mobile Health Clinic commitment is in it’s second year and we were obligated to contribute $2000 for
the Saint Luke Mobile Health Clinic. The remainder of the funds will be distributed equally among the following charities: Prison
Ministry, Rochester Philoxenia House, IOCC, MEOCCA, St. Paul Area Council
of Churches, Orthodox Christian Network, OCMC, Hellenic College, Orthodox Christian Fellowship, Priest’s Discretionary Fund,
and the Lynn Olson Medical Crisis Center.
I want to thank everyone on the committee for all their help and personal contributions in 2016, and I look forward to working
with everyone in 2017 to continue our efforts with our Missions and Benevolence ministry.
Sincerely,
George Mastrogiorgis

All members of the Delton-Karvounarakis family were together for Christmas and took the opportunity to host social hour on New
Year’s Day.
Father Rick visited Kalliopi Verros
(seated) at Little Sisters of the Poor
Home, where Geor-gia Lucas works. Son Demetri was
there also.
To our Beloved Community,
Christ is born! Glorify Him!
In December, our youth program started out hosting the
annual Maker's Mall, where families were invited to come
together and make Christmas gifts for members of the St.
George community, specifically, a population who are
unable to join many of our events in the community. This
took the place of our typical JOY youth night. Later in the
month, the GOYA went to Brunswick zone in Brooklyn
Park for the 3rd year in a row. Here, we enjoyed bowling
and laser tag, along with some of our friends from St.
Mary's OCA. It is important to note that for the 3rd year
in a row, many youth attempted to step up and out-score
the reigning laser tag champion (me), but none succeed-
ed. Alas, the GOYA must wait another year before anoth-
er opportunity is given. Will anyone be able to finally beat
their youth minister? Only time will tell...
Our youth's Manoli Mastrogiorgis was chosen to pre-
sent to the youth a way we can help those in our commu-
nity. He chose to share with us his experience in volun-
teering for Focus Minnesota. On Sunday nights, Focus
Minnesota offers meals to all who walk through their
door, completely served by volunteers. Manoli has been a
part of every aspect of this volunteer night, as he has par-
ticipated in preparing the food to be served, and volun-
teering the 2-3 hours serving. St. George often volunteers
their time to serve the people in the community, and if
Focus Minnesota is an organization you would like more
information on, please see Nathaniel Kostick. Every Sun-
day (as well as other days in the week) are open for vol-
unteer opportunities. Let us thank Mr. Manoli
Mastrogiorgis for sharing his experiences with us and
look forward to next month, where we will hear from Par-
ry and Billy Paraschou.
