Principal’s Post – 26 July 2018

Dear Parents and members of our school community,

What is a School Climate Survey?

There are many different types of school surveys available today, measuring a wide variety of factors from mental health and bullying to drug and alcohol use and more. One popular type of measurement used today is the school climate survey. The phrase school climate “refers to the quality and character of school life…[it] is based on patterns of students’, parents’ and school personnel’s experience of school life and reflects norms, goals, values, interpersonal relationships, teaching and learning practices, and organizational structures.”

School climate surveys are scientific measures that evaluate a range of aspects of the educational environment to assess perceptions and identify specific strengths and weaknesses within a school. The goal of these measures is to gain an accurate, representative picture of the school in order to improve in various targeted areas.

A WISH FOR YOU MY CHILD by DONNA DARGIS

If there could be only one thing in life for me to teach you, I would

teach you to love. To respect others so that you may find respect in yourself. To learn the value of giving, so that if ever there comes a time in

your life that someone really needs, you will give. To act in a manner that you would wish to be treated To be proud of yourself. To laugh and smile as much as you can, in order to help bring joy

back into this world. To have faith in others, to be understanding. To stand tall in this world and to learn to depend on yourself. To only take from this earth those things which you really need, so

there will be enough for others. To not only depend on money or material things for your happiness,

but to learn to appreciate the people who love you, The simple beauty that God gave you And to find peace and security within yourself. To you, my child, I hope I have taught all of these things for they

are love.

What Do School Climate Surveys Measure?

School climate surveys measure an assortment of different facets of the environment, depending on the school’s goals and the variation of the measure being used. Many teacher and staff surveys of school climate gauge school staff knowledge and understanding of items such as:

• School safety • School leadership • Shared decision-making • School climate • Students and learning • The teaching experience

This year along with all Catholic Schools in WA, St Jerome’s is conducting a School Climate Survey in conjunction with Curtin University.

The one for our parents is named “The Parent and Caregiver Survey” (PaCS) and details on how you can participate are on the next page.

There are 483 families here and we are very keen to have at least 200 responses to accurately give us a sense of how we are doing and what we can do to improve even more. I am sending home the information that follows in paper form so there is more chance that parents will participate.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to tell us how things are going for you and your children. We value your feedback and we will try to respond to the information you provide.

Feedback does not include the data of individuals; rather, feedback involves a graph based upon feedback from all parents. Your responses are totally anonymous.

It is your impressions we are seeking. There are no right or wrong answers. All you will be asked to do is to consider how often each statement takes place in terms of: Almost Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Often and Almost Always.

***** Kindy Interviews These have been an extremely positive experience last term and this term too. I have met many lovely new families who want their children to come to our beautiful community. Please remember, if you have a child who is due to be enrolled for Kindy in 2019, please contact the office immediately. Every day, there seems to be more siblings making themselves known to us. They are our highest priority and it is very important that we get all them enrolled first. KINDERGARTEN 2019 ENROLMENT APPLICATIONS If you have a child born between 1st July 2014 – 30th June 2015, they are due to attend Kindergarten in 2019. Application forms are available at the office or online at our website. Please return application forms to the school office ASAP.
