Introduction

• Today were all going to explore a whole new world. The world of ASL! ASL stands for American Sign Language. By using our hands to create signs we will be able to communicate with each other. With the help of your classmates you will be able to learn this new language.

Task

• Before we’re able to explore this new world you will have to know how to sign. Don’t worry, I will pair each one of you with a partner. You will practice with your partner through different fun activities. By playing games you will improve your knowledge on ASL. At the end of this task you will each be able to know how to fingerspell the alphabet and your name.

Process

1. Each student will be assigned to a partner.

2. You will practice fingerspelling the alphabet with your partner by using the slideshow.

Process 2 4. Feeling confident on your fingerspelling? Great job on

working together as a team! Now lets play a game to test our knowledge on alphabet signs. With your partner you will have the opportunity to play a memory game. In this game will have to click on the question marks to reveal what's underneath. Then you will have to match the letter to its ASL sign. 5. Individually you will complete this worksheet. You will match 4 letters to the proper sign. You will draw a line from the letter to the correct ASL sign. Once you are done you will hand it in to the teacher.

Process 36. Now you have learned how to finger spell the alphabet

and your name. You will move on to completing a Fingerspelling Word Puzzle. Each student will work on it individually . You will write down the correct letter for the ASL sign in the box on the right. There are at least five hidden words in the puzzle. You will circle the hidden words . For each word you find you will get an extra point to your grade. Once you are done with the puzzle you will hand it in to the teacher. Good luck and have fun!

*** Students who are English Language Learners or have a learning disability will have personal assistance by the teacher or aide.

A No mistakes in fingerspelling the alphabet and name. The alphabet must be in correct order. Fingerspelling will be completed in a timely manner.

B Less than five mistakes in fingerspelling the alphabet and name. Must be in correct order. Fingerspelling must be completed in timely manner.

C Less than ten mistakes in fingerspelling the alphabet and name. Few mistakes in the alphabetical order. Fingerspelling completed at a slow pace.

D Less than fifteen mistakes in fingerspelling the alphabet and name. A lot of mistakes in the alphabetical order. Fingerspelling completed at a very slow pace.

E More than fifteen mistakes in fingerspelling the alphabet and name. Most of the alphabetical order is incorrect. Fingerspelling completed at a extremely slow pace or not completed at all.
