TBA Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin Thursday, April 11, 7:30 PM The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain Winner of the National Jewish Book Award, The Gustav Sonata begins with the meeting of two five-year-olds, in kindergarten, in a small town in Switzerland just after the war. A lifelong friendship ensues, indelibly marked by what they uncover in their town—and about their families—from before they were born.

Thursday, May 2, 7:30 PM—Join the TBA Book Group for a celebration in honor of

Rabbi Kulwin after the book discussion! The Far Euphrates by Aryeh Lev Stollman Stollman, an academic physician by day, has achieved critical acclaim through his moon-lighting as a novelist. Through the story of Alexander, son of a rabbi in Windsor, Ontario, The Far Euphrates is what The Times called an exploration of our effort to “solve for our-selves the riddle of God’s existence and cultivate a sense of mercy in an unforgiving age.”

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

Parashat HaShavuah Join the lively discussion of legend and lore, the ancient world and the modern one, the Jewish peo-

ple’s feelings about its God, and God’s feelings about His people. Through our reading of the weekly portion, and occasional forays into the traditional commentators, we seek not only to understand the profundities of Torah, but also to understand the world and ourselves a little better. Parallel English/Hebrew texts will be used. We hope you’ll stay for services, but even if you can’t, stop by for a weekly dose of Torah! Saturdays, Parashat HaShavuah, from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin Each class is a stand-alone unit so that an inability to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an enjoyable and stimulating learning experience. Jews, Art and Jewish Art : The Ten Commandments insist that we are not to make graven images. Nev-ertheless, graphic arts—to say nothing of music, literature and other artistic forms—have long been associated with Jews and Jewish life. The Torah itself contains prose and poetry of unparalleled beauty; a Renaissance rabbi “proved” that all orchestra instruments were found in the Bible; and Marc Chagall is on anyone’s list of the greatest painters of the 20th Century. We will examine Jewish writings about art, and works of art themselves, to try to understand Judaism’s historic relationship with art, and the prominence art enjoys in Jewish life today.

Jews and Music—Liturgical music, folk music, Mahler, Schoenberg, Copland…what makes it Jewish music? Tuesday, April 9, 7:30 PM

Jews and Painting—Jewish themes, like Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac, have long been subjects of the greatest western artists; many of those great artists were Jews. How did this happen? Thursday, May 16, 7:30 PM

Art and the Holocaust—From before the war, from the camps, and certainly since, the Holocaust has inspired artistic works beyond number. Does this say something about the importance of art to the Jews?

Our First 120 Days

On Sunday, May 5, 9:00 AM, Representatives Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) and

Tom Malinowski (NJ-7) , will visit Temple B'nai Abraham to discuss their

"First 120 Days." Sworn in at the beginning of one of the most

tumultuous legislative sessions American has ever known, they will

describe what their first months in Washington were like: what was

expected, what wasn’t, what they learned, and what they think lies ahead. There will be ample time

for Q and A. Free and open to the community. For information go to www.tbanj.org or 973-994-2290.

(Over 95% of Temple members live in one of these two districts.)

Pesach Custom of Selling Chametz

Dear Friends: I am pleased to give you the opportunity to participate in the lovely Pesach custom of selling Chametz. As you know, in preparation for Pesach we are to clean our homes of all forbid-den foods. Technically, Chametz (“leaven”) is any food made of grain and water that has been allowed to rise. Practically, this includes bread, cake, cookies and so on, and depending upon our level of observance can also include items as diverse as beer and ketchup.

A key problem with pre-Pesach cleaning is what to do with Chametz we would rather not get rid of? That unopened box of Captain Crunch or those still sealed Oreos are definitely Chametz…but do we really have to throw them out?

Happily, Jewish tradition says “no.” Jewish law allows us to sell our Chametz temporarily. Even though the Chametz remains under our roof, as long as it is owned by someone who is not Jewish, and is therefore not really “ours,” our home is kosher for the holiday.

The procedure is as follows: 1-Go ahead and clean your house for Pesach. As you come across Chametz that you would like to keep, put it in a special, segregated place, like a cupboard designated for this purpose or a special section of the pantry. Once you have set aside all the Chametz you want to sell, seal it in some fashion, perhaps by putting tape across the cupboard door or by securing a large piece of paper or plastic wrap over the goods stored on a shelf. The seal should remain in place until late in the evening of Saturday, April 27. 2-Fill out the authorization form ( on the right) and return it to me. I need to receive it no later than the morning of Friday, April 19. Later that day I will enter into a contract with a non-Jew who will purchase our Chametz.

Erev Passover, First Seder: Fri, April 19

Passover, Second Seder: Sat, April 20

Passover Services: Sat, April 20, 10:00 AM, Shabbat/Passover Services Sat, April 27, 10:00 AM, Shabbat/Passover Services, Yizkor

There are many online and print resources to help us in preparing for Pesach, including how-to guides for the proper way to rid our homes of Chametz and lists of permitted and forbidden foods for Pesach. If you have any questions at all, please call me directly.

With best wishes from house to house for a hag sameach,

B’shalom, Rabbi Clifford M. Kulwin

Authorization to Sell Chametz

I/We, the undersigned, do authorize Rabbi Clifford Kulwin to act as my/our agent to sell my/our Chametz as necessary. I/We understand that any Chametz in my/our house will not be mine/ours for use from the afternoon of Friday, April 19 until Saturday April 27.
