FROM THE PASTOR

"They will ridicule him, spit on him, torture him, and kill him.

After three days, he will rise up.” Mark 10:34

On the road to Jerusalem, Jesus predicts his own death and resurrection three times. (Mark 8:30, 9:30, 10:30.) Jesus is walking with his disciples and trying to teach them and prepare them for what is to come. And with one exception they entirely dismiss his words. They don't ask about it, they don't laugh it off. In the first prediction, Peter tries to correct Jesus and Jesus has to end up correcting Peter. It's almost comical, but again, there was no request for clarification. Nobody thought to ask what it meant that he would rise 3 days later. Instead, after each prediction, the disciples end up bickering with each other over who's the greatest or who can sit by Jesus in glory. They try to play favorites with the Son of God. They are distracted by trivial debate instead of focused on Christ. Have you ever not listened to God speaking in your life? Have you ever ignored God, because life was busy or you were otherwise engaged? Have you ever looked back and seen that God placed opportunities or clues for you to be more prepared for a particular time in your life? A couple weeks after Christ says these words, he will have gone to the cross and left an empty tomb. The disciples will wonder why. The women will leave the empty tomb scared. There will be confusion, fear, and doubt. There didn't have to be. There doesn't have to be now. Listen when God is calling. When God calls, new life is born. When God calls, there is resurrection. Grace & Peace,

Matt Cecil

Associate Pastor
