Welcome back Father Dan Kelly to his ministry at St. Mark’s As we continue our journey through Lent we welcome back our Pastor, Father Dan this weekend and join with him in moving forward in faith and benevolence. May our Parish, as Archbishop Paul-André wished us in his letter last weekend, become ‘even more wonderful, shining every more brightly the hope and light of the Gospel in the midst of our community’. In this we pray. At this time, we acknowledge with much appreciation the time Father Robert Smith spent with us in ministry and friendship. May we fondly keep him in our thoughts and prayers and look forward to having our paths cross again. What is Lent about?

Lent does not exist for itself. We observe it for the sake of Easter, the Church’s celebration of Christ’s victory over death, darkness and sin. There would be no Lenten season, just as there would be no Christmas (at least in a Christian sense), if it was not for Jesus Christ having been crucified and having been raised from the dead for our sake. This is such an enormous event of faith that it needs to be prepared for during these

40 days of Lent. Once we observe this preparation season well, we’ll get a sense of the immensity of the most important event of our Christian faith: Christ’s Death and Resurrection. And once we have let ourselves be immersed in that immense event during the Three Great Days, we’ll know why we want to celebrate it for 50 days: the Easter Season concluding with Pentecost.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE – Sowing seeds of justice for women and girls in Nigeria

“Doubly poor are those women who endure situations of exclusion, mistreatment, and violence, since they are frequently less able to defend their rights. Even so, we constantly witness among them impressive examples of daily heroism in defending and protecting their vulnerable families.” – Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 212. Supporting women and girls is a priority for Development and Peace. When 276 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram from Chibok in Nigeria, our local Nigerian partner began working for their freedom, and managed to smuggle three girls to safety. “The three girls, who were 17, 18, and 19 years old, still seemed to be under the effect of the swirl of emotions generated by the trials they experienced since their abduction,” states Raphael Yimga Tatchi, Development and Peace program officer for Nigeria. “Their voices and lost eyes betray deep pain… glimmers of humanity shine through only when they courageously recount the details of their escape.” The Share Lent collection for Development and Peace is on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, March 22nd please consider what you can contribute to make a difference in the lives of so many. Stations of the Cross February 20th -- March 27th Each Friday during Lent beginning February 20th at 7:00 p.m. we will be making the Way of the Cross here at St. Mark’s. Please join us as we journey with Christ through His Passion. Hunger Meal During Lent, Development and Peace will offer a hunger meal on Fridays at 6:00 p.m. downstairs in the Hall before the Way of the Cross. This meal is offered to remind us of all those who are less fortunate than we and who hunger. Anything that you can contribute will be shared with those most in need through the Development and Peace organization. All are welcome to join. ‘Priest, Prophet, King – The New Evangelization’ Adult Faith Formation series Parishioners will be pleased to know that Father Robert Barron’s ‘Priest, Prophet, King’ DVD series will resume Tuesday, February 24th 7:00-8:30 p.m. and continue on until Tuesday, March 17th in the basement hall. These interactive sessions include a DVD viewing followed by a short group discussion. Popcorn is provided. All are welcome! For those who want to avail themselves of daily spiritual reflections during Lent, you can sign up for them for FREE at the following link: www.lentreflections.com or check the website: www.wordonfire.org

Cursillo Announcement I would like to let you know about the upcoming Women’s Cursillo Weekend to be held March 5th to 8th at Notre-Dame-de-la-Providence Retreat House in Orleans. This will be followed by the Men's Cursillo Weekend, April 9th to 12th.

The Ottawa Cursillo movement is a powerful instrument of renewal in the Catholic Church. The aim of the movement is to concentrate closely on the Person and teachings of Jesus Christ. Its purpose is to deepen our faith, wherever we are, and to stir within us the desire to serve the Church. In the spirit of Pope Francis’ call to re-evangelize the world, starting with each of us, I would like to invite you to pray about attending this weekend. It has been my experience that if we give the Lord the opportunity to meet with us and touch us, He never disappoints! Come and see for yourself.

You can go to our website at ottawacursillo.ca to register and find out more about the movement. André Sirois (Parish representative) Reminder Church Envelopes for 2015 There are still about 30 envelope boxes remaining in the vestry that have not yet been picked up. We will be removing them soon. Note the vestry is the small room off to the left of the entry. If you do not find your box, please contact the Parish office. Important Security Reminder for St. Mark’s Parking Lot A couple of Sundays ago, a parishioner had the unfortunate experience of having their car window smashed and a sizeable amount of cash stolen. Please be reminded not to leave any valuables, cash or attractive items in your vehicles while attending mass or events at the church. Upcoming Meetings and Events
