A warm welcome back after the half term break. It has been

lovely to hear about the adventures that the children have

had.

It has been another busy and exciting week at Clifton. Please

read further on in this newsletter about all the great activities

that your children have been enjoying in school this week.

We have had a brilliant Science Day today coordinated by

Miss O’Sullivan. During the week each class was taught a

scientific concept; the pupils then went on to teach that

concept to other children in a different year group. Yesterday

I observed the Nursery children teaching the Reception

children all about explosions with fireworks in a jar. This

afternoon we had pupils from St Peter’s, Barney Baker, Toby

Mayfield and Harriet Doyle, who demonstrated many

amazing chemical reactions to the delight of the children.

This was organised by Mr Smith, Head of Chemistry at St

Peter’s School. My thanks to all of the children and staff,

particularly Miss O’Sullivan for organising such an inspiring

day.

3C presented an assembly on Wednesday about Guy Fawkes

and the Gunpowder Plot and also how to keep safe on

Firework night. My thanks for to the children who spoke so

clearly and to Miss Collins for preparing them.

It was great to see so many parents at our Family Matters

Talk, ‘Helping Your Child To Be Happy At Home And School’

on Wednesday evening. I know that I found it valuable and it

provided me with a few more parenting skills that I am sure

will help. My thanks to Helen and Ann from Family Matters

York. As I have previously mentioned, this seminar was one of

a number of workshops we will be running as a school

throughout the academic year.

On Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th November we are

hosting our Parent Forums for this term.

On Tuesday evening I attended a lecture by Sir Anthony

Seldon, Vice Chancellor of Buckingham University and retired

Headmaster of Wellington College. It was a very enlightening

and entertaining talk about ‘Cameron at 10’. This is one of a

number of lectures organised at St Peter’s School 3-18, please

see the attached form for future lectures and events.

As you know we are fundraising for “Walking with the

Wounded” this year. Further details about a walking

competition are included in the newsletter—Mrs Clarke looks

forward to seeing your photos!

Finally many congratulations to Sheldon Bonner and his

ground staff team who came second in the best grounds

teams category in the Independent Schools and Universities

Charity News

Our school charity, Walking with the Wounded, have been very busy. The Walk of Britain veterans arrived at Buckingham

Palace on Sunday, 1st November after walking 1000 miles over 72 days through Britain. Walking with the Wounded also

recently won a Pride of Britain award in recognition of their work in supporting veterans. You may also have seen them on

the BBC programme DIY SOS, which featured Prince William and Prince Harry helping to build a Walking with The Wounded

support centre as part of a project to create a community in Manchester for our wounded veterans and their families.

Now it’s our turn!

Popcorn Friday

On 27th November the School Council will be selling popcorn at playtime to raise money. Bags of popcorn will be 50p.

12th-26th December Walking Home for Christmas

Walking With The Wounded is calling on people across the UK to do their bit for wounded servicemen and women this

Christmas and asking us to join the campaign Walking Home For Christmas to raise vital funds for veterans who simply don’t

have a home to walk to.

The campaign, backed by Nick Knowles, Dominic West, Julia Bradbury and Sir Chris

Bonington among others, will see thousands of people being sent special Santa hats,

pulling on their walking boots and having an adventure on their very own doorstep – be it

1 mile or 100 miles this December.

David Henson, captain of GB’s Invictus Games team and an ambassador for Walking

Home For Christmas, said: “The Walk Of Britain team are showing what’s possible for

wounded veterans and Walking Home For Christmas is a fantastic way for people to

show their support, get involved and have some fun in a Santa hat. “As a wounded

veteran the challenges I faced seemed impossible but with the support of Walking With

The Wounded I am forging a new career in bio-engineering. I can’t imagine being

homeless. For those veterans, the need is even greater – with getting a job being the key

to getting back on your feet and independence.”

It costs £10 to sign up and you will receive WWTW hi-vis vest and a santa hat. We hope as many of you will sign up as

possible. To get involved go to http://walkingwiththewounded.org.uk/support-the-walk/wwtw-events/walking-home-for-

christmas or pick up a flyer from the school office.

Attempt to go for one walk or walk every day! Take photos of you on your walk and email them to Mrs Clarke so we can

share them with everyone at school in January. We will have prizes for the most walks completed and the most unusual walk.

Keep fit, raise money, raise awareness and have fun!

Mrs Clarke has already signed up and will be walking every day for all 14 days. What will you do?

discovered a mysterious rucksack in their classroom on

Monday morning. After investigating the contents and

other clues, we decided the bag belongs to a real life polar explorer. He must have accidentally left it in 1B! This has led us to learn about the cold Polar Regions on planet Earth, the 3 different states of water and what we can do to keep ourselves warm.

All the children in Years 1 to 3 have now completed their gymnastics apparatus work. It is always a very exciting time for everyone when the big, scary equipment comes out and the Year 2 children demonstrated some wonderful shapes in their Balance theme, always remembering to stay in position for three elephants!!

What an exciting first week back in 1M! On Monday we

stumbled across a rucksack full of warm clothes, ropes and

ice picks belonging to an Antarctic explorer. We have since

been carrying out lots of scientific experiments which we

were able to use today to teach the rest of the school about

hot and cold.

2S have had a busy first week back after the half-

term break. It was lovely to see the arrival of

such a lot of beautifully made Viking ships and

photos of ships which have been made by the

children over the holiday. Clearly a great deal of

imagination and creative effort went into all of

these. Thank you to all the patient helpers at

home! Everyone has really enjoyed admiring

them.

2S are also the proud owners of the Mathletics

cup this week, which is nestling amongst the

Viking ships. Well done you mathletes!

Here are some pictures of their French lesson

this week. The children were showing great

concentration during a game, thinking carefully

about the French words they had to read before

placing them on the game board. I was most

impressed with their beautiful accents!

Child Development and Parent Books In conjunction with the recent Parent Workshops, you may be interested to know that we recently purchased some Child Development and Parenting books. These books are in the Library area, (please see attached photograph of where these books are positioned). Please feel free to peruse these books. If you wish to take any book home there is a generic ‘parent book’ barcode positioned inside the front cover of the red Library Barcode folder. Scan the book and then scan the barcode. Alternatively, please ask your child for full instructions! You are able to have a book out for a period of two weeks and we would be grateful if you could return any books you borrow in a timely manner. Please remember to scan the book back onto the library system on return – any books outstanding will be followed up with a reminder in the weekly newsletter asking for the return. Mrs Franey was instrumental in sourcing these books for us. Should you have any ideas of books which would enhance this resource please do not hesitate to contact her and indeed, should you have any ‘technical’ issues, please see Mrs Headlam-Morley. We certainly hope that this new resource will be an excellent addition to the school.

Where to find our Child Development and Parenting Books

This week in RB we have been exploring flight through the air. We discovered a magic flying carpet had arrived and the children all thought of magic words to make our carpet fly—this set

us off on many adventures! We also learnt about what gravity is and how it sticks everything to

the Earth, and had fun being scientists, testing which objects would stay in the air the longest.

In Nursery we have been investigating fire and fireworks as part of Science week. The week started with a talk about fire safety from the fire brigade. On Tuesday we lit a fire at Forest School to practise the fire safety rules and toasted marshmallows. We have also carried out several firework related experiments. We made fireworks in a jar using oil, water and food colouring. Next we made different explosions using coke, mentoes, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and alka seltzers.

Finally on Thursday we demonstrated what we had learnt during the week to Reception. A really interesting week!

All the Year 3 children enjoyed an energetic sporting afternoon at Yarm School on Tuesday where they took part in skill workshops and small sided games of tag rugby and high five netball. We had a lovely time and the children were a credit to the school on and off the field of play. Well done Year 3!

RS have been wondering why leaves fall! We

have been exploring gravity using a range of

different objects. We made predictions about

how far and fast different objects fall,

measured the distance of thrown and falling things

as well as using different

recording methods.
