A Vision for Teachin g Early Ad olescent Ch ildren Martin Smith The greatest necessity in teaching English to early adolescent children is to catch their attention; and the only way this can be done is to have a theme. A theme is a n all-enco mpassing a nd known subject arou nd which the serie s of lesson s revolves. I say, ‘series of lessons’ because it is axiomatic that all courses should have defined beginnings and ends : administrators need to realize that English is not sold by the yard – as if it were a fabric for making something – but rather as individual pedagogic artefacts, like Persian carpets. The reason for this is that if the children’s interest is caught, the teacher gradually acquires increasing freedom of movement; as intelligent children aged 10-12 can quickly progress
