Here is an outline of the activities for OP4; this unit SHOULD be completed by 11/10, but MUST be completed no later than 11/16. Check with me after

each step, I MUST initial off on completion before you may move on.

1. Page 4: Complete K: what do you already know about this unit? [should take about 5 minutes]

a. Think about what you already know about our Constitution, why it was created, what ideas we used to create it and why it is so important. List at least 4 facts

2. Page 4: Complete W: what do you want to know about this OP? [should take about 10 minutes]

a. Read the Intro on page 5, look at objectives, learning targets, learning scales, vocabulary and the visual to get a better understanding of what this unit will cover

b. Write at least 2 SPECIFIC questions you want to learn related to this unit

3. Vocab: Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: New Jersey Plan, Virginia Plan, Great Compromise, 3/5th’s Compromise and Shay’s Rebellion. [should take about 10 minutes]

4. Page 9: You are going to begin to understand the first government in America, the Articles of Confederation and why it did not last. [should take about 40 minutes]

a. Rip out Workbook pages 61-70 and attach them to page 9 of your ISN.

i. As usual, complete ALL the questions (DBQ: Breaking it Down, It Matters Because, What Do You Know? Think Critically, Mark the Text, Show Your Skills) EXCEPT the Take The Challenge.

b. Left Side Activity on page 8: There is a list of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, it is your job to explain the results of those weaknesses. It is important to understand the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation to understand why the Constitution was created.

5. Vocab : Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: Articles of Confederation, Federalists and Anti-Federalists. [should take about 10 minutes]

6. Page 11: The first major political parties were the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. They had very different opinions about what the country needed, but created a compromise to ensure the longevity of the country and its government. [should take about 40 minutes]

a. Read the notes on Page 11, highlight all the FEDERALIST ideas in YELLOW and all the ANTI-FEDERALIST ideas in PINK.

b. Left Side Activity on Page 10: Complete the double bubble to compare and contrast the ideas and viewpoints of the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists.


7. Vocab : Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: preamble and posterity. [should take about 10 minutes]

8. Page 13: The Preamble is like the intro paragraph for the entire Constitution; it lays out the reason for our government, [should take about 30 minutes]

a. Get the GREEN Preamble Puzzle handout and cut the pieces. You will be matching the phrase with its means and putting them IN ORDER on page 13 of your notebook. You may use the workbook pages and the textbook to complete this activity.

b. Left Side Activity on page 12: Your teacher will assign you a phrase from the preamble. On page 12 draw an illustration to visually define the phrase.

9. Vocab : Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: amendment, ratify and article. [should take about 10 minutes]

10. Page 15: You are going to extend your understanding of the beginnings of our government, especially the Constitution [should take about 45 minutes]

a. Rip out Workbook pages 71-80 and attach them to page 15 of your ISN.

i. As usual, complete ALL the questions (DBQ: Breaking it Down, It Matters Because, What Do You Know? Think Critically, Mark the Text, Show Your Skills) EXCEPT the Take The Challenge.

ii. Page 79-80 is EXTRA CREDITb. Left Side Activity on Page 14: Pick an activity to demonstrate

your understanding of how to make an amendment:i. CHOICE 1: Create a children’s story book (at least 5 pages

PLUS a cover, with color and pictures) to explain how to create an amendment.

ii. CHOICE 2: Create an iMovie to explain how to create an amendment.

11. Vocab : Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: popular sovereignty, bicameral, legislative branch, executive branch and judicial branch. [should take about 10 minutes]

12. SUMMATIVE PROJECT : You will be investigating one of the founding fathers to better understand the men behind the government [should take about 35 minutes]

a. You will be creating a “Fakebook” profile on your assigned Founding Father using the sheet provided.

13. Page 17: It is important to understand that our FIRST government was the Articles of Confederation, but that it was not a successful government. We had to fix the issues from the Articles of Confederation in order to create the Constitution, which frames the government we have today. [should take about 35 minutes]


a. Complete the notes on page 17 using the Presentation on the website.

b. Left Side Activity on page 16: Using your new understanding of the Constitution and its different parts, write a short summary explaining each and draw a picture to accompany your explanation using the template provided.

14. Vocab : Complete the following definitions in your ISN on page 6 and 7: federalism, confederation and unitary. [should take about 10 minutes]

15. Page 19: You have looked out the changes made from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution; we changed the system of government we have in America. Systems of government show how power is distributed (different from types of government, where we looked at who is in charge).

a. Watch the video and look at the notes on the Presentation to complete the notes on systems of government on page 19.
