From the Principal’s Desk ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Kia ora koutou e te whanau This week we welcomed Leah, Chase, Sophia, Kade, Saryn, Axel and Riley to our school. It has been great to see how quickly they have all settled in. This takes our roll to 132. We also welcomed May Gelacio and Margaret Stark to our school in the role of Teacher Aides. We look forward to working alongside them both as they support students within our school. Thank you to everyone who has respected the procedures that have been put in place for Alert Level 2. Rather than going directly to the classroom, please remember to continue to come directly into the school and sign in. This is important for contact tracing. This week the Prime Minister announced information about Alert Level 1 and the Golden Rules for everyone to follow. Moving to Level 1 will depend on Monday’s Cabinet’s decision. For schools this means: If people are sick, they should stay home (phone Healthline or their GP and get tested if they have cold or flu symptoms). Continue to regularly wash and dry hands, sneeze and cough into elbows. Soap, water and the ability to dry hands need to continue being provided in bathrooms. Regularly disinfect shared surfaces. Support contact tracing efforts. Stringent self-isolation of those who display relevant symptoms of COVID-19, test positive for COVID-19, have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, or have been overseas in the last 14 days – Ministry of Health information for self-isolation. It looks like sport is underway again, with rugby practices starting this week. There were some very excited students yesterday afternoon. Ngā mihi nui Val Ward and Rebecca Suangoon

THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS COMPETITIONS (ICAS) 2020 Students are invited to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS) programme. Except for writing for Year 4 and 5 students, all the assessments are now online and students will sit them in August/September. The competitions, available for Year 4 to 8 students (Year 3 to 8 in English, Science, Spelling and Mathematics) provide an opportunity for students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling, and Computer Skills. ICAS Writing will not be offered this year. All students receive a certificate, an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The student report is also useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in skills and processes in the ICAS they participate in.

Certificates are awarded for each year level in New Zealand as follows:

High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants Distinction to the next 10% of entrants Credit to the next 25% of entrants
