Approving the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget, which covers July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014, was one of my first actions as your newly elected Councilmember. On July 30th, my Council Colleagues and I passed the Appropriations Ordinance (AO), the final step in the City's 2014 Budget Process. The AO defines the legal levels at which the Mayor is allowed to control operational and capital expenditures. This Ordinance governs the upcoming financial transactions required to conduct the affairs of the City throughout Fiscal Year 2014. You sent me to City hall to bring resources to District Four neighborhoods. I am pleased to report that I have successfully advocated for the inclusion of several key infrastructure and neighborhood improvements. With my vote, millions of dollars have been allocated toward the following District Four projects, bringing them one step closer to becoming reality: New Skyline Hills Branch Library Martin Luther King Jr. Way Promenade Sidewalk repair and construction: examples: Market St. and Kelton Rd. PROJECT UPDATE: Promenade on Martin Luther King Street

Councilmember Cole assisted the Broadway Heights Community Council in securing $225,000 to begin planning the construction of a promenade on Martin Luther King Street. The promenade is currently in its planning stages. The coordinated effort of Broadway Heights Community Council, the Public Works Department, and Councilmember Cole’s office has allowed the project to develop successfully. A complete project plan and timetable for the construction of the promenade is expected to be released late September 2013.

Tuesday, August 6 — Annual National Night Out— The first Tuesday of August, each year, is nationally recognized as National Night Out. "National Night Out" is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., residents in neighborhoods throughout San Diego and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout San Diego host a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities, and anti-crime and drug rallies. Join me at the following National Night Out events:

Saturday, August 17- Health Fair and Back to School Kickoff will be hosted by Assemblymember Shirley Weber, 79th District from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the George Stevens Senior Center, 570 S. 65th Street 92114. Bring your family and enjoy a fun filled day with a wide variety of health screenings, educational activities and free give-a-ways for the whole family. Saturday, August 10- Family Art Day will be held at the Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave. from Noon– 4:00 pm. This event is hosted by the Center for Community & Cultural Arts in Conjunction with El Caballo. This year’s exhibit will highlight ‘The Horse in Mexican Folk Art’ along with free entertainment, refreshments, demonstrations and hands-on art projects. Jackie Robinson YMCA summer sports kick off in July. This summer the YMCA will be offering youth basketball, soccer, pee wee sports for 3-5 years of age, as well as cheer and football clinics. (Monday through Friday, from 12 to1 p.m.) at Chollas Lake, Encanto and Skyline Hills Recreation Centers as well as the Jackie Robinson Robins YMCA, Bell Middle School, O’Farrell Middle School and Lincoln High School. El 30 de julio, mis colegas del Consejo y yo pasamos la Ordenanza de Apropiaciones (AO), el paso final en el Proceso del Presupuesto de la Ciudad 2014. Esta Ordenanza regula las próximas transacciones financieras necesarias para llevar a cabo los asuntos de la ciudad durante todo el año fiscal 2014.
