What is text?

• Text is any piece of writing.• This could be a letter, an email, a

novel, a poem, a recipe, a note, manual instructions, an article in a newspaper or magazine, writing on a webpage or an advertisement.

• Any texts written has got PURPOSES.

• Some types of text: exposition, description, narrative, recount, report, procedure, anecdote.

• A narrative is a text that tells a fictional story or fantasy, a factual-based story, or a story combining fact and fantasy.

• The purpose of a narrative is to entertain or to amuse the readers or the listeners.

What is a narrative?

• Orientation (a setting of characters & a plot)

• Complication (problems are arising)• Resolution (solution of problems)• Coda (moral values taken from the

story)

Generic structure of narrative (sistematika penulisan):

• An orientation contains who or what is in the story, when the story is taking place, and where the action is happening.

• A complication contains a chain of problems or conflicts that influences what will happen in the story

• A resolution contains how the characters solve the problem arisen in the complication. It can be ended by happy or sad ending.

• A coda provides a comment or moral values based on what has been learned from the story

One day a big ship was broken near a small island. There was only one man survived. He was washed away to an empty island.

Every day he waited for help but no one came. He built a little hut from the wood. One day after looking for food, he arrived home and found his little hut on fire. The smoke rolled up to the sky. Everything was lost. He was very sad.

Early the next day, however, he heard the sound of a ship that was getting closer to the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the man to the rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied. The man thanked God for the good luck. The bad thing made a good thing.

SNOW WHITEOne upon a time there lived a little girl

named Snow White. She lived with her aunt and uncle because her parents were dead.

One day she heard her uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White.

Snow White didn’t want her uncle and aunt to do this so she decided it would be best if she ran away. The next morning she ran away from home when her aunt and uncle were having breakfast. She ran away into the woods.

• Narrative text bisa berupa cerita rakyat (folktale), cerita binatang (fable), legenda (legend), cerita pendek (short story), dll. Di dalamnya terdapat konflik/masalah yang diikuti dengan penyelesaian.
