Smallmouth Bass
Once you catch smallmouth on a fly rod – you’re addicted! Here in Algoma, the region is known for trophy-sized smallmouth that receive little if any fishing pressure. The smallies will readily come to the surface for poppers in yellow, black and green. For sub-surface, wooly buggers and muddlers are great as is a local pattern known as “Scotty’s McFly”. The bass are always looking for crayfish, leeches and especially minnows and smelt. These are big fish so we recommend you use a minimum of 5 or 6 weight rods with floating lines and intermediate lines. For leaders, 9 foot lengths matched to 10lb tippits is best. Algoma lodges, outfitters and flyshops can put you onto world-class smallmouth bass fishing with the chance of catching a new record. This is the best-of-the-best for bass fishing!

Northern Pike
Seeing a massive northern pike explode on a surface fly is something any fly fisher loves. Here in Algoma there is incredible access for fly fishers to cast for trophy pike on both rivers and lakes. Fish of 30 to 45 inches are common, all in the 15 to 30 pound range. The pike here will readily hammer large streamer flies and topwater poppers. Recommended rod weights are 9 or 10 matched to good quality reels with solid drag systems. Floating lines will serve most of your needs but bring a sinking line matched to a steel leader to cover all parts of the water column. Algoma has exceptional fishing for pike through their numerous lodges, outfitters and fly shops from May through to September.
