Ontario is a fly fishers paradise with over 400,000 lakes, rivers and streams and access to trophy-sized fish. In Northern Ontario and Algoma specifically, the fishing is world-class. In Sault Ste. Marie the famous St. Marys River has virtually every species a fly fisher would want to swing a fly for - Atlantic Salmon, Steelhead, Brown Trout, Lake Trout and even Pacific Salmon. Best of all, you can stay at local affordable hotels and walk down to this incredible fishery. Algoma Country is blessed with numerous outfitters and lodges that feature lake and river fishing for both warm water and cold water species. You can cast dry flies for wild Brook Trout on a small river in total solitude or throw big poppers to entice fat Smallmouth Bass into explosive surface takes. From Bass to Northern Pike, Algoma lodges and outfitters have the fly fishing conditions and species you want. You can take a floatplane, train or car to exceptional wilderness fishing adventures. Best of all, it is very affordable and accessible. This is the ultimate destination for fly fishers who want to catch trophy-sized fish!

Smallmouth Bass

Once you catch smallmouth on a fly rod – you’re addicted! Here in Algoma, the region is known for trophy-sized smallmouth that receive little if any fishing pressure. The smallies will readily come to the surface for poppers in yellow, black and green. For sub-surface, wooly buggers and muddlers are great as is a local pattern known as “Scotty’s McFly”. The bass are always looking for crayfish, leeches and especially minnows and smelt. These are big fish so we recommend you use a minimum of 5 or 6 weight rods with floating lines and intermediate lines. For leaders, 9 foot lengths matched to 10lb tippits is best. Algoma lodges, outfitters and flyshops can put you onto world-class smallmouth bass fishing with the chance of catching a new record. This is the best-of-the-best for bass fishing!

Northern Pike

Seeing a massive northern pike explode on a surface fly is something any fly fisher loves. Here in Algoma there is incredible access for fly fishers to cast for trophy pike on both rivers and lakes. Fish of 30 to 45 inches are common, all in the 15 to 30 pound range. The pike here will readily hammer large streamer flies and topwater poppers. Recommended rod weights are 9 or 10 matched to good quality reels with solid drag systems. Floating lines will serve most of your needs but bring a sinking line matched to a steel leader to cover all parts of the water column. Algoma has exceptional fishing for pike through their numerous lodges, outfitters and fly shops from May through to September.

Brook Trout

Few things compare to seeing a wild brook trout come to the surface for a dry fly. Here in Algoma some of the finest brook trout fishing is available for anglers and at very affordable costs. Algoma is blessed with numerous locations that have lake, river or both types of fly fishing opportunities for brookies. Using 4,5 and 6 weight rods coupled to floating lines and using dry flies and streamers, you can catch lots of quality wild brook trout from 2 – 5 pounds and larger. Lodges and outfitters throughout the region have great brook trout fishing plus the bonus of other types of fly fishing for species such as northern pike and smallmouth bass.
