PROGRAM SPONSORSWelcome families, friends and supporters to the very first concert of The Central Oregon Youth Orchestra.

With exuberance and steadfastness, WE, as a community, have launched a youth orchestra program in Central Oregon! I thank you, each of you, sincerely with gratitude and appreciation for your involvement to create this remarkable opportunity with me. Tonight, we’ll savor and celebrate the music making of these fine, young musicians. Your presence this evening is vital and

equally essential to the beauty of the music. I hope you will enjoy this evening with love, pride and joy.

Congratulations, a dream unfolds…

Respectfully yours, Amy Goeser Kolb, Founder and Director

We are the music makers,

And we are the dreamers of dreams,Wandering by lone sea-breakers And sitting by desolate streams;

World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers

Of the world forever, it seems.

Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy O’Shaughnessy,

Ode from Music and Moonlight (1874)

Program notes written by Central Oregon Youth Orchestra musicians

Composer George Bizet wrote the “Farandole” as the 4th movement of the L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2. L’Arlésienne was also a play written by Alphonse Daudet, a romantic yet heartbreaking tale. Georges Bizet was French, and lived in Paris almost his whole life. He wrote his first symphony when he was seventeen, but it was not discovered until after his death. The “Farandole” is most decidedly French, and consists mainly of two contrasting themes; the march is in a minor key that has its roots in a French folk song, and the more dance-like part is in a major key that is from the farandole dance that originated in Southern France. This piece changes from a monophonic texture (a single melody line) to a polyphonic texture (two interrelated melody lines) to a homophonic texture (with a single melody line and background chords) to form a moving and varied piece. Written by Skylar Grayson, COYO percussionist.

French Composer Maurice Ravel originally wrote the Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte for piano in 1900. An orchestral version was published in 1910. Ravel dedicated his Pavane to his patron, the Princesse de Polignac, however, it is not about any particular princess. The pavane is a slow dance that Europeans liked in the 16th and 17th centuries. Ravel described his pavane as “an evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times have danced at the Spanish court. When asked, Ravel said, “do not be surprised that the title has nothing to do with the composition. I simply liked the sound of those words and I put them there, c’est tout.” Written by Mateo Garza, COYO violinist.

Wagner’s Overture to the Mastersingers of Nuremberg acts as a beautiful medium to showcase the repeating themes that are present throughout the rest of the opera. There is juxtaposition apparent between two conflicting ideals of music: one belonging to the conservative and traditional Meistersingers and the other pertaining to the radical and progressive young Walther (the protagonist) of the story. This opposition is best seen in the contrasting melodies. Big, triumphant marches symbolize the Meistersingers and their massive presence, while soft and melodic lines belong to Walther. What will be heard in this piece is a mix of ideas between the serious and the comedic, the unsuccessful and the triumphant, and the heroic and the not so heroic. Enjoy! Written by Jacob Jarvis, COYO trombonist.

Dmitri Shostakovich composed his third string quartet in the village of Komarovo, outside Leningrad in early August 1946. This work was dedicated to the Beethoven String Quartet, who gave the world premiere in December in Moscow of the same year. The second movement, in a dark minor key, is based on three themes. The first violin presents the first theme set against a viola *ostinato (a motif or phrase, that persistently repeats itself on the same instrument); the second theme is presented by the viola, against a cello ostinato. The third theme is played *staccato (very short notes) and *pianissimo (extremely soft), as the first theme returns to frame the contrasting episodes.Written by Amy Kolb.

Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 is background music for the play by Henrik Ibsen, also called Peer Gynt. The first movement, Morgenstimmung (Morning Mood) is a calm piece that is intended to portray the sunrise over a peaceful grove of trees in the desert. The solo flute and oboe melodies parallel the rising of the sun; the full light of day is displayed when the whole ensemble plays together. The fourth movement portrays the nastiness of the trolls in the repeated melody, which steadily increases in volume, speed and pitch. In the play, this is a backdrop to the trolls arguing for Peer’s death, while he tries to escape their clutches. Written by Alex Gesme, COYO oboist.

The Lord of the Rings compilation has many beautiful, light colors of the rainbow with dark, strong and emotional spots through it. Howard Shore is the composer, I like him because he loves nature and uses it to get inspiration for his music. These pieces are based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings. The story is an adventure and the music guides you through the adventure. I like that even though the pieces in this compilation are not fast, they are still very powerful. Close your eyes and feel the emotion through the adventure. Written by CJ Neary, COYO violinist. The Planets is a very popular orchestral suite written in the early part of the 20th Century. The composer, Gustav Holst, wrote 7 movements each one named after the planets in our solar system, except for Earth. In 1930 the planet Pluto was discovered, but Holst preferred not to add an 8th movement. After Holst’s death, Colin Matthews, who was familiar with Holst’s works, wrote an 8th movement and called it “Pluto the Renewer.” The Central Oregon Youth Orchestra is playing the 4th movement “Jupiter - Bringer of Jollity.” We hope you enjoy listening to this piece as much as we enjoy playing it. Written by Jonah Rosberg, COYO cellist.

The Central Oregon Youth Orchestra – Staff

Julia Bastuscheck, COYO conductor, is retired from a 21-year career teach-ing beginning strings and orchestra in Juneau, Alaska. Currently, Julia con-ducts the Desert Sage Orchestra and the Awesome After School Orchestra at the Cascade School of Music. She also teaches private viola and violin students. Julia received her B.A. in music at Western Washington University, studying viola with Charmian Gadd and chamber music and orchestra with Barton Frank. In 1985, at the University of Washington, Julia completed her teaching certification, and studied viola and chamber music with acclaimed violist Paul Coletti. She plays with the Central Oregon Symphony, North State Symphony in Chico/Redding, CA, Juneau Symphony in Alaska and the Proteus Chamber Players, a diverse ensemble of fine, local musicians including her husband, Nathan.

Eddy Robinson, COYO conductor, began playing the bass at age nine. Be-tween the ages of 11 and 18 he was a member of the Salem Youth Sympho-ny program. In 2004 he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon, where he studied double bass with Forrest Moyer and Tyler Abbott. In 2005 Eddy started an orchestra program, in Flor-ence, AZ, where he taught for seven years. Eddy currently teaches orchestra at Pilot Butte and Sky View Middle Schools and is also a conductor for the Awesome After School Orchestra at the Cascade School of Music.

Max Burns, COYO orchestra assistant, is a Central Oregon native raised in Redmond, the first one in his family to take up a musical instrument. Max chose the trombone in the 6th grade and began to seriously focus on his musical studies while attending Redmond High School. He studies music at the Central Oregon Community College with Michael Gesme and is a trombone student of Sue Mudge.

Amy Goeser Kolb, COYO founder and director, moved to Bend with her family, husband Andrew and 8-year old son Alex in August of 2012. Amy completed doctoral studies in oboe performance at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She also lived and trained in Germany for nearly ten years. She has served on the faculty at Wichita State University and the University of Oregon. She is currently principal oboist of the Amarillo Sym-phony TX and still enjoys concertizing in Europe and giving master classes around the country. This May she played her very first concert set with the Central Oregon Symphony! In the summer she enjoys performing with the Oregon Bach Festival and traveling with her family, particularly to the Ore-gon Coast with Jack Russell Terrier, Lucy.
