Welcome to our 2021 Martell Recital weekend, “A Celebration of Dance”!

As we share in what seems to be one of the greatest culminations of perseverance in our

children’s lives as well as our own, I find myself in awe of our Martell families. Together,

we went through a remarkable turn of events. The interruption of Covid brought to me so

much fear and uncertainty. With the transition out of our Highland Square location to our

new and beautiful space, the extraordinary changes to how we operate, the immense

health related concerns, and the absence of so many students we traditionally see in a

year, Martell started off on shaky but hopeful ground. As the dust began to settle and we

inched along, it was apparent that the foundation of Martell remained sturdy. Just like

other small businesses, the pressure was on, but the love and the smiles on the faces of

our dancers and the encouraging emails from our families kept us going strong and

pushing through. Then, one average afternoon while catching up on my emails, I

received a message from a well-known parent containing one of those subject lines you

never want to receive…

There's a student who has been dancing at Martell for the past seven years who began

again in 2020 with as much heart and soul as ever. Unfortunately, in November, Lola

Palmer was diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Hearing this news

from her mother, Lora, left me stunned. The thought that Lola, a dance loving, happy 10

year old, a student who I have watched grow up dancing alongside my daughters, was

fine one day and extremely ill the next was unfathomable and simply heartbreaking;

especially during such an already stressful time in our lives. I couldn’t help but think

about what she was feeling and how she was going to overcome all the new obstacles.

Knowing that Lola is a strong little girl, the Martell Faculty and I have found comfort in

following her journey on her Facebook page, “Support for Lola”, and have kept up with

her courageous battle. It’s amazing that throughout the ups and downs of treatment, Lola has maintained a 4.0 GPA. Rarely do you see her not casting her bright smile, having

fun with wigs and photoshoots, designing fabulous shoes for Project Outrun, enjoying

well-deserved naps, eating some very yummy meals, and being truly adaptable through

all she is experiencing; Covid times included.

When I mentioned Martell’s strong connection with Project Ed Bear to Lora, she told me that Lola had already received her bear and that she named it “Martell” because of how much she loves the studio. Lola, our dance community loves you and we know that if you

could be here on our stage this weekend, you would be without hesitation. That’s why we are dedicating this “Celebration of Dance” to YOU!

To Lola’s parents, Lora and Joe, our hearts go out to you and we will miss having you here in the audience, but we know you are watching virtually. We pray that you all

continue to stay strong and that we will soon see Lola back on her dancing feet as she

continues to make progress on her path to healing. You are an inspiration to us all and a

great reminder that no matter what, we just have to keep pushing through for our kids no

matter how scared we may be - they deserve everything we have to give. To all Martell

parents, we love and appreciate you and thank you for every second we have to spend

with your remarkable children.

With immense gratitude,

EMMA CAPOZZI

Our sweet girl, watching you fall in love with dance over the last 10

years has brought us so much joy. From the little girl who was so

concerned with getting the steps just right, to the beautiful young lady

you are today, who is at her happiest at the studio, it has all been worth

it. Enjoy every moment on stage tonight, you have earned it with your

endless dedication and hard work. We are so proud of you!

A Special Note from our Scholarship Student, De’Moni Dobson

I am very grateful for the opportunity of being Martell’s scholarship student for the past two years. Everyone has had a hard time adjusting to our new

circumstances, but the Martell faculty still made our dance season wonderful.

Rachel - I would like to thank you for giving me the best two years. You are a

wonderful teacher and such an inspiration. You’ve done so much to make sure my year went smoothly, and I greatly appreciate that. Your class,

amongst others, have really made my abilities advance and taught me how

to find the way I move.

Tammy - I’ve always loved the energy you create in your classroom. Thank you for pushing me to a place. I never would’ve thought I’d get to. Taking your class this year has really shown me my strengths and weaknesses. Your support

through everything has been amazing, thank you for all the love Tam!

Sharlee - I’ve always loved taking your classes. I always feel challenged and strong. Even demonstrating for you made me feel as if I was actually taking the

class. It made me realize how hard-working you make everyone feel. The space

is just so comforting, you feel like you can do anything.

Miss Patti - I would like to thank you for pushing me in your class. It’s been a hard

year, but your corrections help tremendously! Without your help I don’t know where I’d be now. Thank you so much for your support!

Torie - Your class will always be a place where you can challenge yourself.

Hard work really pays off in your class, but we still have such a good time.

Thank you so much for the beautiful solo you have choreographed for me!

Mrs Jen - Thank you for the talks we’ve had and all the encouraging words you’ve given. I know I can always come to you in times of need. Erica- Demoing for you this year has been amazing! Your dances are always

so creative. I haven’t taken your class for many years, but your Nutcracker pieces are always my favorite to learn.

April - I’ve had you ever since 3rd-5th Hip Hop and still to this day, you push me.

Your class has always been so fun, along with your choreography. Thank you so

much for getting me to where I am today!

Hailey - I really enjoy your class, and I’m so honored to be doing this solo you

have choreographed for me. It’s been exciting learning from someone new. Thank you for all you’ve done!

Mom and Dad - I will always be grateful for you guys. Thank you so much

for putting me in dance, I’ve never would’ve gotten here without you. Your support has helped so much, and I appreciate how much you’re there for me. I love you!

Future Scholarship Student - After all this time, it is now your turn to be

Martell’s Scholarship Student. You really deserve this but go through your

year wisely. It will be challenging, but don’t get discouraged. It’s your time to shine! I wish you the best, I hope your year is amazing!

Congratulations on 10 years of dancing at Martell. We are so

Proud of you!
