WDPR wishes to express our heartfelt sympathies to her family for their loss. A native of Arlington, MA, Betsy graduated from Arlington High, and Kathryn Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. While she was working at the Harvard Business Review in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Betsy met Hayward Jones, also a native of Arlington, who was home on leave from the Navy. Betsy and Hayward were married in 1956 at the start of his senior year at Springfield College in Springfield, MA. After tours of duty with YMCA’s in Milwaukee, Newark, and Ashland, Ohio, Betsy and Hayward arrived in Dayton in 1970. As their four children grew up and became more independent, Betsy began night classes at Sinclair Community College and eventually earned an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts—achieving all A’s. Betsy served over 15 years as the secretary to the Chairman of the Nursing Dept. at Sinclair Community College, retiring in 1994…then began her volunteering career. For several years she served as secretary to the Loaned Executives program of the United Way during the annual campaign. In the mid-1990’s, she began her volunteer work with WDPR helping with the mailing—first with Jenny Paxton and then Helena Carter—and working the phones during pledge drives. She also contributed delicious home-baked goodies from time to time. She also volunteered at the Miami Valley Literacy Council serving as the organization’s librarian, and whenever possible at Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm for various activities. During the past few years, while she was fighting cancer, she organized the newspaper clipping files for Dayton History. Museum of Discovery will also display some of their 1.4 million cataloged pieces, “Including a Mastodon skull, a Saber Toothed Tiger skull and even Triceratops eggs from June 21st to September 1st,” Becker enthuses.

Also of note is the arrival of “Crunch,” a nearly 200-year old alligator snapping turtle, weighing in at 165-pounds and measuring 4-feet in length. Crunch is the oldest of his kind in the world. Becker is very excited about Crunch’s 6-day layover at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, “He is visiting from the Blackwater Turtle Refuge in Indiana, helping to spread awareness about endangered species. If you’d like to see Crunch up close, he’ll be here June 16th through the 21st.”

Also part of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery network is SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park at 2301 West River Road. SunWatch will join with the Miami Valley Council for Native Americans for the 20th Annual Keeping the Tradition Pow Wow. “An opportunity for the whole family to explore traditional American Indian culture, arts, crafts and food,” Becker notes.

On Classical 88.1, she believes that we are much like the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, saying “I see us as very similar assets to the community—irreplaceable and places where everybody can get something positive out of the experience.” More information is available on-line at www.boonshoftmuseum.org.

If you have children or grandchildren and live in the Greater Dayton region, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, at 2600 DeWeese Parkway, is a must-visit attraction. Tracing its roots all

the way back to 1893 and the Dayton Museum of Natural History, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery offers interactive science learning for children of all ages—and the adults that tag along!

“We really do have something for everyone, from toddler areas to very complex exhibits” says Sarah Becker, Manager of Marketing and Public Relations, continuing, “I’ve been surprised how much I have learned since I’ve been working here, on everything from Peregrine falcons to dinosaur bones.”

Speaking of Dinosaur bones, a very special exhibit is on display now through September 1st—“Chinasaurs: Dinosaur Discoveries from China” This traveling exhibit showcases some of the wonderful fossil finds from China. “We’ll have 5 complete dinosaur skeletons plus 3 dinosaur “robots,” basically, mechanized dinosaurs,” explains Becker. As a companion to the Chinasaurs exhibit, the Boonshoft

KEYNOTES | JUNE 2008 | CLASSICAL 88.1 FM 3

As summer approaches, we salute two members of the air staff whose service to WDPR will be sorely missed. First, Hank Dahlman, host of

Voices, our weekly program devoted to vocal ensemble music, will no longer host his weekly show. In his own words to our listeners,

“It’s been great serving you for over five and a half years, a joy and a privilege to share with you some of the finest vocal ensemble music I know. But, life has gotten pretty crowded with my work at WSU and the DPO, and there are some new creative things in my real day job that I just can’t pass up. I will miss hosting Voices, miss the folks at the station, and most important, miss you… the listeners.

It’s been a distinct pleasure to be a member of the Dayton Public Radio family, and to work with so many wonderful and professional folks. I look forward to serving them, and you, in new and exciting ways in the future. Keep listening. I know I will!”

We will also miss our Wednesday evening host, Bob Weisman, host of Back from Baroque and Classical Classics. Bob joined the station

over 20 years ago when WDPR was 220 watts monaural and located in Hills and Dales Shopping Center. Over those 20-plus years, Bob hosted the following programs:

The 4-7 pm slot of Weekend Concert on Saturdays, Voices in Concert on Tuesday evenings, The Opera House on Friday nights, Symphony Hall (Tuesday night and later Wed night, over quite a few years). He was also the creator and producer of Back from Baroque—the first program aired March 6, 1991. More recently, Bob produced Classical Classics, which aired on Wednesday evenings. Bob parting words to the station and listeners, “I thank everyone for the kindness and the help they have given me. It has been a privilege to work with so many terrific people. I wish the station and all involved

the very best, and continued success.” Thank you, Bob!

Hank Dahlman and Bob Weisman are two fine examples of how the station has grown into its place of prominence in our community. While both gentlemen will always have a place at the Dayton Public Radio table, their weekly presence will be missed, and we are grateful for their years of service.

“hank dahlman and Bob Weisman are two fine examples of how the station has grown into its place of prominence in our community.”

Our very own Shaun Yu was recognized by the Dayton Business Journal’s as a 2008 Forty Under 40 Award winner on Thursday, April

24. The event was presented by Raj Soin College of Business, Wright State University, and was held at the Dayton Convention Center. The DBJ’s annual award recognizes top young leaders who represent the promise of the Dayton Region and reality of today’s business and community development. A group of staff and board members from WDPR was there to cheer him on. Congratulations, Shaun!

Congratulations to Kevin Gabbard, our Weekend At The Met Contest winner! He and his aunt—who he credits with introducing him to the arts—will be hitting The Big Apple the weekend of October 4th for The Metropolitan Opera’s presentation of Don Giovanni. Kevin is student at The Ohio State University majoring in linguistics and philosophy. He is a Centerville native and has never been to New York City or The Met. They plan to take in many other NYC sights in addition to The Met Opera. Have fun, Kevin! Weekend At The Met Contest was made possible by the generous support of VIP Uniglobe Travel and The Metropolitan Opera.
