IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING THIS TOUR

PLEASE NOTE: • Due to the remoteness of the locations we will be visiting and nature of some of the activities included in this tour,

participants should be in good physical health to participate. While we will do our best to accommodate special requests, this tour is not recommended for travelers if accessibility is a concern or requirement. Some hotels and attractions are not handicapped accessible and walking up to 1/4 mile to viewpoints is required to experience outdoor attractions.

• Please note that European-style hotel rooms tend to be more functional then elaborate and are typically smaller than accommodations in the United States. If you are requesting two beds in a room, the rooms will have 2-TWIN beds. Rooms with 2-queen beds are not available.

• While it is HIGHLY unlikely that we won’t see the Northern Lights while in Iceland, they are naturally occurring phenomena and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

• Be prepared for winter weather! Average temperatures range from 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit in Iceland during the month of November; snow, wind, and rain are all possible during our visit.

• This itinerary is subject to change. The itinerary/schedule is based on current and historical air flight times, but the 2021 schedules have not been confirmed yet. Modifications to the schedule are possible, but the dates of the tour will not change. Flight schedule is TBA, but we anticipate non-stop flights from Boston, which will include an overnight flight on the way to Iceland.

• All activities noted on the itinerary are WEATHER DEPENDENT and can be changed or cancelled due to inclement weather or unsafe conditions. In the event that we need to modify the schedule, we will do our best to find suitable replacement activities.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

• This is a one-of-a-kind, small group private tour designed specifically for Terrapin Tours. There is a maximum of 22 passengers, we will have a local guide with us for the duration of the tour, and we will be traveling in a 34 passenger mini-bus.

• Reminder: To see the Northern Lights, it needs to be dark...we’re increasing our chances by visiting at a time of year when there are approximately 16 hours of darkness a day. Good for viewing the lights, but be prepared for limited daylight.

• We have chosen smaller boutique hotels in remote or countryside locations to increase our chances of viewing the Northern Lights. While each hotel has an on-site restaurant, and comfortable accommodations, the hotels have limited amenities and are located in rural areas. Multiple dining options, shopping, and other activities are not available nearby. The evenings will be spent gazing up at the sky.

• Be prepared for higher prices in Iceland. Food, souvenirs and other items come at a higher cost. You should anticipate spending between $40-70 USD for dinner (inclusive of tax and gratuity) and $15-30 USD for lunch.

Page 4: A Terrapin Tours “Signature Tour” Experience Winter Iceland · Relax and unwind at the Blue Lagoon ~ a geothermal spa like no other place on earth • Travel around the famed

Day 1 – November 2: We will depart New Hampshire and make our way to Boston for our flight to Iceland. We anticipate a non-

stop, overnight flight that departs Boston in the late evening. Dinner on your own at the airport.

Day 2 – November 3: WELCOME TO ICELAND! Upon arrival, we will have time for a quick “grab and go” breakfast at the airport,

before meeting our local guide and driver. This morning we’ll learn all about one of the country’s most treasured natural resources –

geothermal energy, and then it’s off to begin our journey around the famed Golden Circle. Our stops include the historical and

geological wonder that is Thingvellir National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here the American and Eurasian tectonic plates

are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimeters per year (you can actually stand on both plates at one time!), and it is here that the

Icelandic Parliament was founded in 930 AD.

In the afternoon, we will arrive at the Geysir area, which is filled with geothermal hot springs, geysers, and vents. While the original

geyser is now dormant, the Stokkur geysir shoots a column of water up to 30 meters into the air every 5-10 minutes in a thrilling

display of nature’s forces. We will check into our hotel in the late afternoon where our guide will give us more information about

the Aurora Borealis or “Northern Lights”, and if you are lucky, you will witness the bubbling hot springs contrasting with the

Northern Lights dancing in the sky above. Lunch and dinner will be on your own at the Geysir Visitor Center and/or our hotel.

HOTEL (1 Night): Litli Geysir Hotel – a newly opened hotel located on the Golden Circle, across from the geothermal fields

Day 3 – November 4: Our first stop today is one of Iceland’s most memorable sights – Gullfoss – a two-tiered, roaring waterfall that

tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river below. As we continue our travels, we will visit a geothermal greenhouse where tomatoes

are grown all year. Before we end our tour of the Golden Circle, we will also have a chance to come face-to-face with majestic and

gentle Icelandic horses.

This afternoon, we will visit the LAVA Centre – a volcano and earthquake exhibition center that reveals the epic forces of nature that

shaped our planet and created Iceland over millions of years. The interactive exhibition displays a collection of artifacts, films and

graphics from various volcano eruptions that have occurred in the past century.

In the late afternoon we will check into our countryside hotel for a relaxing 2-night stay. While here, you can enjoy the outdoor hot

tubs and gaze up at the sky in search of the elusive lights! Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

HOTEL (2 Nights): Hotel Rangá - a luxury, yet relaxing countryside lodge, located on the South Coast

Day 4 – November 5: Today we will travel along the South coast to one of Iceland’s finest folk museums, the Skógar Museum. The

unique collection of mementos of this region’s past is housed in beautifully preserved old turf-roofed houses known as

Byggdarsafnid Skogar.

Next, we will visit two of South Iceland’s most well-known and beautiful waterfalls; Skógafoss, an impressive 60-meter-high

waterfall located at the foot of a mountain range, and the fairy tale-like Seljalandsfoss. Set at the foot of a mountain range,

Skógafoss comes directly from two glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, and is one of the largest and most elegant waterfalls

in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is part of the river Seljalandsá, which has its origins underneath the glacier Eyjafjallajökull. The waterfall

towers 200 feet above you, and it is possible to walk behind the falls (conditions permitting, and if you are willing to get soaking

wet!). It is one of the most photographed attractions in Iceland.

Winter Iceland ~ Incredible Sights & Northern Lights Itinerary Overview – November 2-9, 2021

REMINDER: All passengers MUST carry a valid U.S. Passport for air travel between the United States and Iceland. Passengers without proper documentation will be denied boarding and refunds will not be given. If you are not a U.S. Citizen, it is your responsibility to obtain the required travel documents to enter Iceland. Please contact your embassy or consulate to ensure you obtain the proper documentation. Please Note: U.S. Passport Cards are NOT acceptable for international air travel.

Page 5: A Terrapin Tours “Signature Tour” Experience Winter Iceland · Relax and unwind at the Blue Lagoon ~ a geothermal spa like no other place on earth • Travel around the famed

Before returning to our hotel for the evening, we will visit a local wool store, a unique family owned local gift shop in the heart of

South Iceland. Iceland is known for its fine wool products, and this will give you a chance to see the beautiful Icelandic design items

created locally. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

HOTEL: Hotel Rangá

Day 5 – November 6: Today, we will travel along the South coast towards the small village of Vík. We will stop at the black volcanic

beach south of the village, from where you can view the impressive rock formations Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar.

The beach, where the Reynisdrangar rock formations are located, was voted as one of the top ten beautiful non-tropical beaches in

the world. The Reynisdrangar Sea Cliffs are towering, spiky basalt sea stacks jutting out from the black sand beach into the air. The

Dyrhólaey Peninsula is a promenade famed for its rock arch, staggering views of Iceland’s South Coast, historic lighthouse and

wealth of birdlife.

Next, we will embark on an exciting adventure! Our journey and destination will depend on the weather and road conditions, as

well as the current ice formations. We may visit a glacier, we may visit an ice cave, we may take a ride to the top of a mountain- no

matter what we do, it is sure to be memorable!

This evening we will check into our hotel for a 2-night stay. Our hotel is located near the small village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur on the

famous Ring Road between the two of Iceland’s most famous glaciers, Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The location provides another

opportunity to gaze up this evening for a chance to see the Northern Lights. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

HOTEL (2 NIGHTS): Fosshotel Núpar - a country hotel in a spectacular setting near glaciers, mountains, and lava fields

Day 6 – November 7: Today is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs. Our drive today takes us along the Ring Road and offers awe-

inspiring views of Europe’s largest national park. Vatnajökull National Park is home to Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine

environment, and the Vatnajökull glacier - which dominates the area and is larger than all of Europe’s glaciers combined.

We will arrive at the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, famous for its floating icebergs in shades of milky white and bright blue.

On a clear day, you may even get a good view of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier behind the lake. Next to the glacier lagoon, we will stop

at the Diamond Beach where you will see large chunks of ice that have washed up on shore after being shaped and polished in the

surf of the glacier lagoon. It´s truly a beautiful sight and a great photo opportunity! In the afternoon we visit the tiny turf church at

Hof before making our way back to our hotel. Meals: Breakfast

HOTEL: Fosshotel Núpar

Day 7 – November 8: Today we will make our way back along the south coast of Iceland towards the Reykjanes peninsula -

characterized by immense lava fields, barren landscapes, cone-shaped volcanoes and heightened geothermal activity. We’ll visit the

Blue Lagoon geothermal spa to relax and unwind in the beautiful mineral rich water. The milky-blue water is unlike anything else

found on earth and makes a stark contrast to the surrounding black lava fields.

After experiencing the Blue Lagoon, we will check into our nearby hotel, Fisherman’s Village. This quaint collection of turf-topped

hotel rooms and cabins is bursting with Icelandic charm, and is located away from city lights, on its own small peninsula. This

evening we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner before venturing outside one last time to search for the Northern Lights. Meals: Breakfast,

Dinner

HOTEL: Fisherman’s Village- located seaside, on the southwestern coast of Iceland

Day 8 – November 9: This morning we will depart from our hotel and drive to the capital city of Reykjavik for a short sightseeing

tour. There will be time for lunch on your own and shopping for any final souvenirs, before we make our way to the airport. We

expect an early evening departure from Iceland and a late evening return to New Hampshire. Meals: Breakfast

NOTE: Many activities are weather dependent. In the event that we need to modify the schedule, we will do our best to find

suitable replacement activities.
