Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above.

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee: earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, joy inside of me. I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, I’ve got the joy, joy inside of me.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began. Love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Joy, joy, joy, joy inside of me! Joy, joy, joy, joy inside of me!

9gLoving God/Loving Neighbor – Faith Family Devotional

How long do you think it took the Israelites to finish the Tabernacle?

Why do you think it was so important to God and the Israelites to have a place to worship when they were traveling through the desert?

Family ActivityTalk about when and how your church building was built.

Think about a big project you as a family can do. Write down the details and di#erent jobs. Plan a time to accomplish this project.

PrayerDear God, thank you for our place of worship. Help us discover new ways to worship you; in Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Exodus 25:1–31:15; 35:4–40:38

God told Moses to have the Israelites build a special place of worship, a church, to use in the desert. Everyone contributed materials and gi"s such as gold and silver for the tent. This was a big project, because God gave them detailed directions for every part. Everyone had a special job to do, and they all followed God’s directions exactly. The place of worship was called the Tabernacle. It was put together like a tent to make it easy to take down when they were traveling and put up when they stayed in one place for a while.

David assembled a group of select soldiers of Israel, thirty thousand strong, to bring God’s chest to Jerusalem. They loaded God’s chest on a new cart. The people treated the chest special because it was the holy presence of God. David and the entire house of Israel celebrated in the L!"#’s presence with all their strength, with songs, zithers, harps, tambourines, ra$les, and cymbals.

Along the way to Jerusalem, the oxen pulling the cart stumbled. A man walking by the cart reached out to steady God’s Chest. One of the rules God gave to Moses was that no one could touch the chest because it was holy. If they did, they would die. When the man died, David was frightened. “How will I ever bring the L!"#’s chest to me?” he asked.

So David didn’t take the chest to Jerusalem. Instead, he had it put in the house of a man from Gath. The L!"#’s chest stayed in this house for three months, and the L!"# blessed the man’s household and all that he had.

King David was told about the blessings on the household because of God’s chest being there. So David went and brought God’s chest up from Gath to Jerusalem with celebration. David, dressed in a linen priestly vest, danced with all his strength before the L!"#. This is how David and the entire house of Israel brought up the L!"#’s chest with shouts and trumpet blasts.

The L!"#’s chest was brought in and put in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David o%ered sacrifices and blessed the people in the name of the L!"#. He gave all the people of Israel a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people went back to their homes.

The Israelites treated the chest with respect, because it was where they felt God’s presence. Do you have a place where you feel God’s presence?

Have you ever been so happy you couldn’t sit still? Did you dance for joy?

Family ActivityHow do you as a family worship God? Do you have a place in your home where you feel God’s presence?

Dance together with joy and celebrate how good God is.

PrayerDear God, thank you for always being with us. We celebrate your love and your presence in our lives; in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

2 Samuel 6:1-19

The Israelites had a place to worship, but the chest of God wasn’t there. King David knew it was important to bring the chest to Jerusalem. He organized a big parade so everyone would see the chest enter Jerusalem. He led the parade, and he danced with all his might to praise God. People playing instruments followed David, and the priests carrying the chest came next. The Israelites celebrated because they were very happy to have God’s chest in their place of worship. David o%ered sacrifices to God. Then he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.

King David wanted to build a permanent temple in Jerusalem to be the worship center for the Israelites, but God chose to give that responsibility to Solomon, David’s son. Solomon’s temple was the first temple the Israelites built for God. It reminded the Israelites that God was the special head of Israel.

The temple was pa!erned a"er the tabernacle, and divided into three important areas: the Most Holy Place, the Holy Place, and the outer courtyard. The inside of the temple, the Holy Place, was made from cedar wood and covered in gold. It held a small gold altar, a gold table, and ten gold lamps on stands. The courtyard had a huge bowl for the priests to wash in before they o#ered sacrifices on a big metal altar shaped like a box, also in the courtyard.

King Solomon made sure all the work was done well. It took seven years to build the temple. When it was finished, Solomon called for the

priests to bring God’s Chest to the temple and place it in the Most Holy Place. Some of the priests sang, “God is good. His love lasts forever.” Others played horns, cymbals, harps, and lyres.

Then a cloud filled the temple. God’s greatness filled the house of worship. Solomon bowed down and called out to God, “There is no God like you.” Then he prayed for God’s people.

Fire from heaven came down on the altar in the courtyard and burned the animals placed there for o#erings. The people bowed down with their faces to the ground in awe of what God had done for them. They thanked God like the priests had done by calling out, “God is good. His love lasts forever.” They worshipped God for seven days. Then the people went home happy.

The Israelites were finally se!led in the land God had promised them. Now they wanted a permanent place to worship God. Solomon took on the task of building the temple. It was to be the center of their religious lives. Solomon wanted the temple to be the most beautiful place ever built. His father, David, had designed the plans for the temple, but God didn’t allow him to build it. He passed it on to Solomon when Solomon became king. Only the best materials were used. It took seven years to finish, and it was as beautiful as Solomon expected. The people gathered and remembered all the wonderful things God had done for them.

Paul: One day, when we were on the way to the place for prayer, we met a woman who was a slave. She had a spirit that enabled her to predict the future. She made a lot of money for her owners through fortune-telling. She kept following us around and shouting.

Woman: These people are servants of the Most High God! They are proclaiming a way of salvation to you!

Paul: The woman kept doing this for several days. Finally, I turned to her and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to leave her!” The spirit le! her immediately.

Silas: The woman was happy, but people were very angry. They realized that their hope for making money was gone. They grabbed us and dragged us before the o"cials in the city center. The crowd joined in the a#acks against us, so the authorities ordered that we be thrown them into prison.

Jailer: I received instructions to secure us so they couldn’t get out. I threw them into the innermost cell and secured their feet in stocks.

Paul: The jailer put us in stocks and chained us, but Silas and I both knew God was there with us. Around midnight we were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to us. All at once there was a violent earthquake that shook the prison’s foundations. The doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

Jailer: I had fallen asleep in the jail, but the shaking and noise woke me. The jail doors flew open and the prisoners’ chains came loose. The prisoners were free to escape. I had promised the authorities I would keep Paul and Silas safely in jail, but I hadn’t counted on an earthquake. The responsibility for losing the

prisoners would fall on me. I was worried, but then I heard someone shouting at me.

Paul: Don’t harm yourself! We’re all here!

Jailer: I got some lights and rushed into the cells. The shout had come from Paul, and all of the prisoners were still in their cells. All I could do was fall down trembling before Paul and Silas and ask them, “Honorable masters, what must I do to be rescued?”

Paul: God was with us, and we were so happy about the jailer’s question. We told him to believe in the Lord Jesus, and he would be saved—along with his entire household.

Silas: The jailer washed their wounds. Then the jailer and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. He brought Paul and Silas into his home and gave them a meal. He was overjoyed because he and everyone in his household had come to believe in God. The next day Paul and Silas le! the prison and made their way to Lydia’s house where they encouraged the church with what God had done for them.

Acts 16:16-40

Paul and Silas traveled to di"erent cities telling people about Jesus’ love. In one city, they met a woman who was a slave. She made a lot of money for her owners because she could tell people’s fortunes. Paul freed the woman. That made her owners mad, so they had Paul and Silas thrown in jail. But Paul and Silas knew God was always with them, so they sang and prayed in the jail. At midnight, an earthquake shook the jail and all of the prisoners’ chains fell o". The strange thing in this story is none of the prisoners ran away when they had the chance. The jailer was so amazed that he and all his family believed in Jesus that night.
