ThispastyearwasoneofgreatreflectionaswecelebratedEventide's60thyearofcaringforseniorsinourcommunity.
Aswereminiscedoveroldphotosandtalkedaboutthosewonderfulindividualswhohelpedshapeourlifestylevillageasitistoday,wealsoacknowledgedanotherimportantsectorintheStawellcommunity:ourwarveterans.
Uponthe70thyearanniversaryoftheANZACslandinginGallipoli,wenotonlyobservedthetraditionalANZACDayservice,butwerecognisedourveryownwarveteranslivingrighthereinEventide.
Therearecurrently16warveteransresidingatEventide,allwiththeirveryown,heroicstorytotell.Thereisalsoalargecontingencyofresidentswhokeptthe'homefiresburning'whilsttheirpartnerwasinservice.FortheyoungergenerationworkingandvolunteeringatEventide,itwasmesmerizingtoheartheirindividualstoriesandwecan'tthankthemenoughforthecontributiontheymadetoourcountry.
TherearemanybigsupportersofEventideinthelocalcommunityandbeyondandwewereonthereceivingendofsomesignificantfinancialassistancethisyear,includingasubstantialbequestfromalateresident.Wealsoreceivedagenerous$9,900grantfromtheFreemason'stoinstallshadecoveringoverthesensorygardenatWarneHouse.AgroupoftalentedlocalcraftersalsocametogethertohosttheinauguralWinterWoolliesFestivalwithaportionofprofitsgoingtoEventide.TheBoardofGovernancewillensurethatthesefundsareappropriatelydirectedintoprojectsatourfacilityinthenearfuture.
Otherkeyeventsthisyearincludeupdatingourconstitution-asrequiredundertheAssociationsIncorporationReformAct2012(Vic)-whichwillbeofficiallyadoptedatthe2014-2015AnnualGeneralMeeting.EventidealsotookpartintheRegionalLivingExpoheldinMelbourneduringMay,handingoutbrandnewinformationpackstopromotetothecityfolkallthebenefitsoftheEventidelifestyle.
Aswemoveintoanewyearwe'llcontinuetoendorseourunique,qualityaccommodationoptionsatEventide,includingthenewtwo-bedroomunits,Plantationhousesandresidentialaccommodation,byreachingouttofamiliesacrossVictorialookingforafantasticseniorlifestylechange,supportedbythebestprofessionalsintheagedcareindustry.

ThechangingfaceofEventideHomesbecameapparentthisyear,withsignificantconstructionandrenovationworksundertakenthroughoutthefacility.
OneofthemosttalkedaboutprojectswastheconstructionofthefirsttwoofeightunitsatthefrontoftheEventideprecinct.Aspartofa$1.8millionproject,thesetwo-bedroommodernunitsofferseniorsafantasticindependentlivingoptionwithintheEventidecommunity.AnotherunitwasalsobuiltforanewresidentatThePlanationVillage,andwewelcomethemtoourcommunity
Tocaterforourexpandingfacility,anewcarparkwith26parkingbayswasbuiltinWilliamStreet.Thisprovidesourstaffwithadesignatedcarparkingareaandhasfreedupthemainentranceareaforvisitorparking.Anothernoticeableimprovement-insideandoutsidethebuildings-isthenewsignagetohelpvisitorsnavigateourever-growingvillage.
Thisyearwewerealsobusywithrenovations,withcottagenumber22undergoingacompleterefurbishmentandseveralothersundergoinganexternalpaintjob.FifteenbathroomsintheCashinandMcGregorwingswereupgradedandafurther25aretobeupgradedacrossthefacilityinthenearfuture.
OverinGrampiansHouse,wepurchasedadditionaloverheadliftingequipmentandotherspecialisedstate-of-the-artequipmenttoassiststafftocareforresidentswithmorecomplexcareneeds.
OthermajorchangesincludedthetransformationoftheKingstonLoungetotheKingstonCommunityCentre,completewithfullyequippedkitchen.ThiscommunalspaceisdedicatedtoindependentlivingresidentstoenjoygatheringsandfunctionsandhasreplacedtheoldPlayhouse'.
Eventidecelebratedsomebigeventsthisyear,includingtheopeningoftheBillCrowCourtyardinNovember.TherefurbishmentwasfundedwithabequestbyWilfredAlanCrow,wholivedatEventideHomesfrom2005to2009.FormerlyknownasCurrieHouseCourtyard,theupdatedspaceincludesanalfrescodiningarea,seatingandpaths.
Theofficialopening,whichwasattendedbyresidents,staffandmembersofBill'sfamily,wasalsoagreatexcuseforustocelebrate60yearssinceEventidestartedoperations.And,speakingofmilestones,wehadafabuloustimecelebratingthe100thbirthdayofresidentBobMcKeewithhisfamilywhoflewfrominterstatetoseehim.
OurvibrantcommunityatEventideHomescertainlyhasalottocelebrateandIthankourBoardofGovernancemembersforvolunteeringtheirtimetoguideus,allourwonderfulvolunteersforthemanyhourstheyputinandourfantasticprofessionalstaffwhobringsomuchloveandcaretoourresidentseveryday.

New units started
Thisyearconstructionbeganonagroupoftwo-bedroomunitsatthefrontoftheEventideHomesprecinctonPatrickStreet.Twounitswerecompletedandoccupiedandanotheronepurchasedoff-the-planreadyforconstructioninthenextfinancialyear.Thereisspaceforeightunitsintotalunderthis$1.8millionproject,toprovideaflexiblelivingoptionforseniorslookingtodownsizewithconfidence.
Freemason funds for canopy
FreemasonsVictoriapresentedEventidewitha$9,900communitygranttoinstallshadecoveringoverthesensorygardenatWarneWing-ourresidentialaccommodationforpeopleexperiencingmemoryloss.In2013,theFreemasonsgrantedEventide$8,500topurchasecanvasawningsforWarneHouseandin2012,$4,000tolandscapethesensorygarden.
New courtyard opened
TheoutsidespaceatCurrieHousewascompletelyrefurbishedandnamedtheBillCrowCourtyard.TheworkswerefundedbyabequestleftbythelateWilfredAlanCrow,wholivedatEventideHomesfrom2005to2009.Completewithartificiallawn,raisedgardenbeds,plants,treesandautomaticsprinklersystem,thecourtyardfeaturesanalfrescodiningarea,seatingandpaths.MembersofMrCrow’sfamilyattendedtheofficialopening.
Mine grant for movies
A$2,000communitygrantfromStawellGoldMineshelpedEventidetopurchaseanoverheadprojectorandascreentothetuneof$7,000.Residentsandtheirfamilieshavesincebeenenjoyingaplethoraofoldandnewreleasemoviesattheirveryown‘cinema’attheGlynCashinHall–completewithpopcorn!
Artists mentored residents
MonthlyartclasseswereintroducedtotheLeisureandLifestyleProgramthisyear,withabandofGrampiansartistsvolunteeringtheirtimetomentorresidents.AnnetteMay,BeverlyGrace,LynMartin,JudithBurkeandIngridRudolphhavehelpedresidentsexploretheuseofacrylicsandwatercolors.Theclasseshavealsobroughtmanysocialbenefitstotheparticipants,aswellasencouragingthemtorevisittheirpastloveofpainting,ortakeupanewcreativeinterest.
Family day at Cato Lake
InMarch,theEventidecommunitygatheredfora‘familyday’atThePowerhouseprecinctinStawell.Alargeturn-outofresidents,includingthoseinindependentaccommodation,metupwithfamily,friends,staffandvolunteersforabarbecuelunchandawiderangeofindooractivities,aswellasenjoyingastrollaroundtheCatoLakeparklands.

Utilizingconstructivefeedbackfromourresidents,families,staffandvolunteersisabigfactorinhelpingEventidecontinuetopositivelygrowandprogress
Beingopentoopinions,suggestionsandcriticismisallpartofourdailyContinualImprovementProgram.Thisyearwereceived470generalfeedbackcommentsfromindividuals,aswellas47complaintsand50compliments.Thisvaluableadvicepresenteduswiththeopportunitytoreviewourapproachesacrossvariousaspectsoftheorganisationandtointroducenewprocessestocontinuallyimproveourqualityofservices.
Anextensivetrainingprogramhasagainbeenundertakenthisyearenablingallstaffthroughlearningtoeffectiveprocessesandcompetentperformances.
Eventidestaffwereverybusythisyear,withthegroundsandmaintenanceteamactivating1500requeststhroughouttheEventidecomplexandoveratThePlantationVillage.Laundrystaffwashed11,000loadsofwashingandthedomesticstaffcompleted6,000hoursofcleaningduties.Inthekitchen,ourcooksproduced97,000meals,plus95,000morningteasandsuppers.
ThisisanoutstandingeffortbyourteamandIwouldliketoexpressmygratitudefortheirprofessionalandfriendlyapproachwhilstmakingtheenvironmentandlifestylesocomfortableforourresidents.I’dalsoliketothankourwonderfuladministrativestaff,whichhelpsourdailyoperationsrunsosmoothly.
It’sbeenagreatyearatEventideandIlookforwardtonextyear’sexcitingchallenges,whichincludeimprovingandexpandingourcapabilitiesacrossabroaderrangeofservicestogiveresidentsanevenmoreflexibleseniorlifestyle.

Thisyeartherewasastrongfocusonservicebenchmarkingandimprovingapproachestothewaywedeliverourclinicalcare.
EventidevoluntarilytookpartinthefirstphaseofastudybytheDepartmentofSocialServicestobenchmarkcertainaspectsofclinicalservicesinAustralianagedcare.Thesetqualityindicatorswere‘pressureinjuries’,‘unplannedweightloss’and‘physicalrestraint’.Wearepleasedtoreportthatweareoperatingatbenchmarklevelforallqualityindicatorsandwearewellbelowthenationalaverageforniluseofrestraints.Theappointmentofanindependentdieticianover12monthsagohashelpedcontributetominimalunexplainedweightlossamongstresidentsandareductioninnutritionalsupplementsbeingrequired.
ThisyearweadoptedtheDepartment’spilot‘PalliativeApproachToolkit’,aimedatraisingthebarofpalliativecareinagedcarefacilitiesacrossthecountry.Ourstaffareprogressivelybeingtrainedintheuseofthetoolkit,whichprovidesvaluableresourcesandguidelinestodeliverbestpracticepalliativecare.
Othernewapproachesforbestpracticeincludedtheintroductionofanewfallassessmentsystem,anewdiabeticmanagementprogram,newchecklistsforreturn-from-hospitalassessmentsandareviewofourmandatoryreportingsystems,withrefreshertrainingprovidedtostaff.
Wealsocompletedadvancedcareplansfor80percentofourresidents.Theseplansarebeingrolledoutaccordingtonewsystemsandprocesses;underpinnedbyincreasedcommunicationwithresidentsandtheirfamiliestosuccessfullydelivertheseplansandefficientlyaddressanyacutehealthconcerns.
Clinicalstaffcontinuedtobuildtheirskillsandknowledgethroughprofessionaldevelopmentduringtheyear.Allnursescompletedthelatestwoundcaretrainingandsevenstaffbecamefullyaccredited‘no-lift’trainers,whowillberesponsibleforenforcingour‘no-lift’program
tominimizestaffinjury.WearealsonowreceivingregulartrainingfromMedicationReviewConsultantswhocomeintoreviewourresidents’medicationsbi-annually,orasreferredbymedicalpractitioners.
Staffingwasachallengethisyear,withasignificantnumberofnursesmovingontootherpositions.Thankyoutoourcontinuingstaffwhopulledtogetherduringthistime!WealsowelcomedanewRNMaryJosephandanumberofenrollednursesundergoingplacement.And,aspecialacknowledgementtopersonalcarerPrincePhillipforcompletinghisenrollednursestudies!
Thestrengthofourteamplacesusinaverycapablepositiontocareforresidentswithawiderangeofneeds,includingthoserequiringthehighestpossiblecare(thisyearwereceivedarecord75residentsinthiscategory).
I’dliketothankthetirelesssupportoflocalpharmacistBrianHancock,GPsfromStawellRegionalHealthandGPsfromSloaneStreetMedicalCentre,EastGrampiansHealthService(physioservice),AgedFootCarePodiatryandtheDementiaBehaviourManagementAdvisoryService,whoareanintegralpartofourdementiasupportgroup.

Thisyear,theLeisureandLifestyleProgramintroducedavarietyofexcitingnewactivitiestoourresidents.
Informationtechnologywashighonthelist,withresidentslearninghowtouseourIPadsandevenuseSkypetocommunicatewithfamilyandfriends.
Thepurchaseofanewoverheadprojectormeansthatourmovieprogramhasbeenactive,bringingmanyhoursoffuntoresidents,aswellastheirfamilyandfriendswhomaypopintowatchamovie.
Whenitcomestohealthandwellbeing,residentshavehadaccesstomassagetherapyandsomehavebeentakingpartinwateraerobicsattheStawellLeisureComplex.
We’vebeenoutandaboutinthecommunitydoinglotsoffunthings,likevisitingtheMen’sShed,StawellLibrary,concertsinStawellandArarat,VintageCarClub,MoystonSheepDogTrialsandmanyofthelocalschools(whichalsoenabledustobrushuponourITskillsthankstothestudents).
We’vetakenpartinsomekeylocaleventssuchastheChristmasParadedowntheMainStreet,whichwaslotsoffun!WealsowonfirstprizeintheChristmasTreeFestivalforournoveltytreemadeofedibledecorations.
ANZACDaywasundoubtedlyanextraspecialonethisyearandmanyresidentsattendedthelocalmarchandceremony,aswellasmade500hand-craftedpoppiesfordisplayatFederationSquare.
Throughouttheyearwealsoenjoyedamixofpartiesandgettogethers,includingabarbecueatCatoLakeforourresidents,volunteers,familyandfriends.
Fundraisingwasbigthisyeartoo,withresidentscomingupwithallkindsofideastoraisefundsforlocalandinternationalcausesincludingCancerCouncilofAustralia,NepalEarthquakeReliefandMoystonFireAppeal(throughtheRedCross).We’dlike
tothankeveryonewhosupportedourfundraiserseitherthroughsponsorshipordonations.
Thisyearweaddedartclassestoourregularactivities,whichalsoincludeZumbawithGiovanna,gamesandquizzes,craft,cooking,gardening,sing-a-longsandvisitsfromperformerslikeKeithHaymes,CarmelPhelan,GeoffHarmer,BobFry,MargaretRobertson,ChristineJohnstonandNeilThornton,SeniorCitizen’sSingingGroup,StPatrick’sPrimarySchoolchoir,StawellBrassBand,UnitingChurchFellowshipGroup,AnglicanChurchChoir(CarolsbyCandlelight)andOACministries.
ResidentsinWarneandUrquharthousesenjoyedsocialandstimulatingperson-centredactivitieslikecooking,gardening,music,dollandsensorytherapy,busoutings,lotsoflovelymorningteasandtimediscoveringtheinternetontheiPad.Highlightsincludeda‘motheranddaughterhightea’andaChristmaspartyforresidentsandtheirfamilies.
Asalways,wewelcomedministersfromalldenominationstoofferspiritualandpastoralcaretoourresidentsandtheFellowshipGroupmetregularlyforprayer,Biblestudyandfellowship.
Tokeepresidentsindependent,weenjoyedvisitsfromBlumesFashions,AthletesFoot,ActionAidsAustralia,AMCALChemist,ANZBank,HelloGorgeousBody,BeautySkinandParklaneJewellery.
Ahugethankyoutotheleisure/lifestyleteamandallthevolunteers.Withoutyourcontributionwewouldnotbeabletoofferthevarietyofprogramsthatwedoandrunthemsosuccessfully.
