1. LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

What is Logistics ?

Logistics is generally the detailed organization and implementation of a complex operation. In a general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption to meet the requirements of customers or corporations. The resources managed in logistics may include tangible goods such as materials, equipment, and supplies, as well as food and other consumable items. The logistics of physical items usually involves the integration of information flow, materials handling, production, packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing, and often security.

Types of Logistics :

Inbound logistsics is one of the primary processes of logistics concentrating on purchasing and arranging the inbound movement of materials, parts, or unfinished inventory from suppliers to manufacturing or assembly plants, warehouses, or retail stores.

Outbound logistics is the process related to the storage and movement of the final product and the related information flows from the end of the production line to the end-user.

Beginning of Logistics

THE WORD “LOGISTIC” ORIGINATED FROM THE COMBINATION OF LOGIC (LOGIC) AND STATIC (LATIN) IN THE LATIN LANGUAGE.

Logistics is primarily a military term, so the first applications were in military areas. However, the word’s main importance was first understood during World War II and then started to be viewed and applied to logistics as a scientific subject. After World War II, many U.S. enterprise businesses recognized the importance of logistics and started to take advantage of logistics services beginning in 1960 and continuing to the present

WITH THE INCREASE IN GLOBALIZATION IN THE 1990S, COMPANIES STARTED TO IMPORT AND EXPORT MORE, AND TRANSPORTATION HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR BUSINESSES IN TERMS OF COST AND TIMELINESS.

Businesses gave importance to transportation in order to maintain their existence in a competitive environment. However, length of distances and the importance of time management have been competitive factors, and businesses must act by integrating various transportation systems. As a result, control of transportation systems has become an important factor. Companies have considered transportation as strategically important in order to maintain the speed of their activities and avoid losing their market share.

AS A RESULT OF THE NEVER-ENDING DRIVE TO MAINTAIN COMPETITIVENESS, THE FIELD OF “LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT” HAS EMERGED, WHICH INCLUDES ALL STAGES OF TRANSPORTATION.

Position in global

The global logistics market is anticipated to register a CAGR of 3.48% from 2016 to 2022 to attain a market size of around $12,256 billion by 2022. Asia-Pacific is anticipated to contribute significantly in terms of revenue to the logistics market share.

WHILE EACH COUNTRY HAS BECOME A POTENTIAL MARKET, SUPPLY AND SALES OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN COUNTRIES HAVE RESULTED IN THE NEED FOR LOGISTICS, EACH YEAR. ALLOWING THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY TO REACH GROWTH RATES OF UP TO 20%

Indian logistics

In the new age, logistics is the mixture of infrastructure, technology and new types of service providers

The Indian logistics sector is currently around $160 Bn and estimated to be of $215 Bn by 2020

International cooperation is required to make the logistics sector grow

From last couple of years, it has seen significant development which is reflected in the global rankings. According to the reports of Global Ranking of the World Bank’s 2018 Logistics Performance Index, India jumped to 35th rank in 2018 from 54th rank in 2016 in terms of overall logistics performance.

Future scope of business

Logistics is regarded as the backbone of the economy as it ensures efficient and cost-effective flow of goods and other commercial sectors depend on it. Logistics industry in India is evolving rapidly. It is the interplay of infrastructure, technology and new types of service providers, which defines whether the logistics industry will be able to help its customers reduce their costs and provide effective services. Despite weak response, the logistics industry continues to witness growth owing to the progress in retail, e-commerce and manufacturing sectors. The Global Logistics sector was expected to grow 10 to 15 per cent in 2013-14. Logistics industry is expected to reach over $ 2 billion by 2019. Rise of e-commerce logistics and increased domestic consumption will pave the way for the industry to grow further in future. With the promise of steady growth and improvement, the service oriented logistics industry is ready to expand beyond the horizons in the latter half of this decade.

COVID-19 Impacts on Logistics

he global logistics industry had a turbulent 2019, registering 1.2% in merchandise trade volume growth due to the stagnant global economy, trade disputes, geopolitical uncertainties, and environmental regulations. In Q1 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak flipped the growth switch in every area of the economy, and the global supply chain is no exception. As the global economy grapples with the pandemic situation, its impact on global trade and supply chain is mounting with rapid deterioration in global investment flows.

The container movement in the transatlantic and transpacific trade lanes has contracted due to the COVID-19 crisis with China’s manufacturing shutdown and sudden recession conditions in North America and Europe. The backlog of delayed orders, port calls, and blank sailings have escalated volume pressures on the containerized supply chain. The pandemic has created a supply shock across the markets, causing severe supply chain disruption, unlike a negative demand shock during the 2008 global financial crisis.

Ocean freight transportation takes the slow lane

China hosts two-thirds of the top 10 busiest ports in the world and meets more than 40% of the world maritime trade. The economy shutdown has led to supply shortages, and the pandemic situation is taking a toll on the global maritime segments, from oil tankers to container lines. The slump in cargo volume has led to increased carrier service cancellations and delays, and blank sailings are being announced by major carriers. The trend is expected to continue

Page 11: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

considering the uncertain market condition and measures to address the supply/demand imbalance. If the situation prolongs, carriers are expected to opt for heavy capacity reduction measures, which would impact the fleet-to-order book.

The major container carriers are at low risk for bankruptcy with this COVID-19-induced downturn as they use blank sailings to counter the impact. However, the small and medium-sized carriers are highly exposed and vulnerable to this unprecedented situation. With weakening investor confidence accompanied by a force majeure situation on energy-related projects, an outbreak in the Middle East, and steep cuts in OPEC oil production, Chinese exports on breakbulk and project cargo are expected to decline in the near-term, impacting the demand growth for heavy lift and multipurpose vessels (HLV/MPV). The widespread impact of COVID-19 accelerates the freefall in the price of VLSFO (very low sulfur fuel oil), reducing the bunker cost. Following the crash of oil prices, the extra cost of the IMO 2020 rule will be deferred until the global economy normalizes, posing a short-term relief for the container lines hit by slumping cargo volumes.

Mitigation measures and contingency planning

The COVID-19 outbreak has shown the industry how delicate the supply chain has become. The heightened safety precautions have required the logistics industry to work in emergency services, as governments and logistics associations work hard to keep the essential supplies flowing. During this difficult time, it essential for logistics companies to have an immediate focus on enabling end-to-end visibility, agility, process flexibility, and collaboration to support their customers in anticipating disruptions and mitigating the respective impacts.

With the global maritime and air freight industry experiencing capacity constraints, logistics service providers should drive transparency by assessing “what-if” scenarios with customers to understand planned volume and strategic needs. Advanced capacity bookings for air cargo could mitigate supply risks for customers on emergency shipments. Freight forwarders and small and medium-sized freight operators should emphasize building digital capabilities to evaluate alternate route-to-market models and address potential operational gaps. Digital logistics is essential to drive the adoption of e-freight to combat the spread of the virus through paper documentation. Production logistics service providers should focus on testing multimodal freight movement as a solution for customers with high dependence on the Chinese supply base, considering their potential dual-sourcing strategies and development of an alternate supply network. In the retail industry, order backlogs are creating inventory stocking issues. However, the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) in warehousing and distribution operations would facilitate inventory accuracy, ensuring the placement of the right products in the right place at the right time. In the long term, robotics systems for warehouse operations, SaaS platforms for transportation management and control tower operations, and artificial intelligence-powered technology platforms for customer management will allow logistics companies to anticipate supply chain risk and promote sustainability goals with enhanced operational efficiency.

Page 12: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

The Goodrich story started in the year 1997, when the promoters of the company T. Venkataraman and R. Gopal incorporated a company called Goodrich Maritime Pvt. Ltd., in Mumbai, India. The objectives before the promoters were to provide Shipping Agency services to the Indian trade. In the 19 years’ of its existence, this company grew in a formidable manner, to encompass within its scope, activities ranging from various spheres of shipping and logistics services.

It expanded geographically from a small presence in Mumbai to various ports and ICDs in India and overseas. Today Goodrich has a very strong presence in overseas locations like UAE, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand. Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and the USA, and a cumulative employee strength of around 560 people. It is recognized by the Indian trade as “The Most Versatile and The Fastest Growing Logistics Company in India.

Aiming to be among the TOP globally too! From a

predominantly India-centric operation, Goodrich today has multiple global operations. The Goodrich Management has never believed in having an unlimited number of group companies needlessly, but always believed in creating additional companies in the group, with a clear-cut strategy in mind. Sometimes geographical and at other times activity-oriented!The highly

Page 13: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

proactive Directors of the Goodrich group have been trailblazers and trendsetters. Working on a 24×7 basis, these leaders have propelled the group to great heights over the last 19 years. This is evident also from the year-on-year growth in the top line and net profits of group companies. So deep rooted are their innovative capabilities, that they could visualize that their dream could fade away if they do not introduce ingenuous activities within their core competency and that was Shipping and Logistics.

There was a lot of thought and design in their approach. Today they are in a position to insulate and protect their profitability, from any untoward downward trend in one or a couple of their activities.

If their efforts have been tireless, their superbly trained and motivated personnel have taken a cue from them, to pursue the goals set by the Directors.

To achieve such an eminent place in the mercantile marine world, the sweat of the people’s efforts was supported by an amiable office atmosphere and constantly enhancing the state-of-art IT infrastructure.

The parent company, Goodrich Maritime is already ISO 9001-2008 certified, and along the way the Dubai outfit Goodrich Maritime LLC has also been similarly accredited by DNV-GL. Goodrich is also moving towards other product specific certifications.

Vision Our versatility in the sphere of shipping and logistics is limitless. Unexplored horizons still beckon us.

Mission To be recognised consistently as ‘the most’ versatile shipping and logistics company, offering on a global basis services par excellence, and developing credibility with all stakeholders to ensure their absolute satisfaction.

Goodrich Maritime LLC (GMLLC)

Established in the 2003, GMLLC was one of the first initiatives taken by Goodrich Maritime India, to set up a subsidiary overseas. The objective behind the formation of this company was to replicate the established business verticals of the parent company in India.

These included a Liner Agency, representations of Tank Operators, supply and fitting of Flexi bags, etc. The enhanced objective was also to set up regional headquarters for Goodrich in the Arabian Gulf. All these objectives were achieved via the establishment of GMLLC, which today has a strong represented presence in countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Iraq, with dependable agents.

GMLLC successfully ran a Dry Van NVOCC, encompassing the whole of Asia. Building in the process an impressive fleet of owned DV units, Reefers, Flat Racks and Open Tops; simultaneously operating its own, very profitable, Global Tank Operations.. This is apart from building its own fleet of owned, leased and lease-purchase tanks of various capacities. GMLLC apart from operating also is active in short and long term leasing of tanks.

Page 16: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

Goodrich Maritime LLC after its recent restructuring, now concentrates exclusively on the operation of only special equipments like tanks, reefers and equipment like Flat Racks and Open Tops.

What was especially remarkable, was the growth of GMLLC as a global tank operator. In the present scenario, Goodrich tanks move to all corners of the globe in an efficient manner.

For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Department of Transportation and state Departments of Transportation all have specific regulations that apply to shipping companies. Clear, well-written HR policies are vital to making sure your employees understand their rights and responsibilities, as well as applicable compliance requirements.

Communication Protocols

With large numbers of employees working off-site, HR departments often work and communicate with employees remotely instead of in-person. Since increased communication is a policy goal, it’s vital for HR not only to establish clear communication protocols within the policy but also to make sure your employees have access to the most current information. In addition to making sure the most current version of the policy readily accessible to all employees, telephone meetings, email, discussion boards and team calendars are helpful communication tools.

Page 24: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

Hiring and Pay

A well-defined recruitment policy is vital to attracting qualified employees. Intense competition in the shipping industry often means going where potential employees are, instead of waiting for candidates to find you. Hiring practices must consider both skills and compliance requirements, such as background checks, commercial licensing regulations and drug-testing requirements. The policy should also establish and clearly define a competitive pay structure. For example, the pay structure for an over-the-road driver might include a standard pay rate for mileage and incentives for downtime and trailer unloading.

Training and Development

Although web-based training is often sufficient for compliance training, policy directives should include an annual or semi-annual in-person skills training requirement. In addition, the Society for Human Resource Management recommends increasing the degree of training documentation you provide off-site employees. Written summaries, online answers to frequently asked questions and scenario-based guidance, such as bad weather driving tips, are helpful tools for summarizing on-site training. Policy directives should also outline procedures for conducting and following up on an annual performance appraisal. A mentoring program is often helpful, both in helping off-site employees feel connected and in skill development

11.COVID-19 Impacts on Logistics

he global logistics industry had a turbulent 2019, registering 1.2% in merchandise trade volume growth due to the stagnant global economy, trade disputes, geopolitical uncertainties, and environmental regulations.

The trend is expected to continue considering the uncertain market condition and measures to address the supply/demand imbalance.

The heightened safety precautions have required the logistics industry to work in emergency services, as governments and logistics associations work hard to keep the essential supplies

Page 32: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

flowing.

2.1 INTRODUCTION TO LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

LOGISTICS

Logistics is generally the detailed organization and implementation of a complex operation. In a general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption to meet the requirements of customers or corporations. The resources managed in logistics may include tangible goods such as materials, equipment, and supplies, as well as food and other consumable items. Logistics was initially a military-based term used in reference to how military personnel obtained, stored, and moved equipment and supplies. The term is now used widely in the business sector, particularly by companies in the manufacturing sectors, to refer to how resources are handled and moved along the supply chain.

LOGISTICS INDUSTRY Logistics Industry refers to the movement of goods and information between the provider and the receiver. The market of international logistics is having a significant growth with growing demand of various goods across the globe. Logistics includes transportation and warehousing, which is undertaken by the logistics provider for the efficient and effective delivery. Major companies are primarily focusing on the specific industry sectors such as high-tech machines, automobile sector, pharmaceutical sector and other high revenue generators. Furthermore, the demand for logistics by major companies has increased. This will include technology-based supply chain, data analytics and other highly developed software technologies in logistics function

EVOLUTION OF LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

The term logistics is attested in English from 1846, and is from French: logistique, where it was either coined or popularized by military officer and writer Antoine-Henri Jomini, who defined it in his Summary of the Art of War Today logistics and distribution is a rather complicated and advanced process but it began years ago in a less advanced form.

Page 40: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

An entire industry was born from what started as a way to get products from point A to point B. Many companies now rely on outsourcing for some or all of their supply chain management activities, resulting in the development of third party logistics companies for efficient transport and tracking of goods. During the Middle Ages elaborate supply systems, roads and warehouses were used. Forts and castles became storage depots supported by the economy of the surrounding countryside. During the Industrial Revolution, logistics advanced greatly with the addition of railways and ships. World War I further increased industrial capabilities. The internal-combustion engine gave rise to widespread use of motor transport. World War II was characterized by dramatic advances in transportation and communication. U.S. shipyards performed at an unprecedented pace to expand the merchant marine (a fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels that engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States).

After World War II, logistics moved from warfare to business. Physical distribution of products began with a focus on outbound activity. Filling orders, distribution of products, storage and warehousing, production planning and customer service are presently important aspects of the logistics process

For most of us, pets are as much a part of the family as the children. Just that they may not be allowed to accompany you on the flight. However, it is the organisation’s job to see that the customer’s pet gets all the attention and care that it needs on its journey. However, all living, warm-blooded animal shipments must meet container requirements established by the USDA. This part, they must also meet minimum requirements for container construction, stability, and ventilation.

Page 52: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

The IATA Live Animal Regulations book contains information for shipping both warm-blooded and cold-blooded live animals. (Details of the regulation can appear as a link since not many browsers would be interested in such details when browsing through this site for the first time)

CUSTOM CLEARANCE

At AIMS Logistics, They have an in-house custom clearance department which enables them to always have full control over exports. hence there is no question of sub-contracting the shipments to anyone for clearance. Being in the Custom House Broking industry since the past few years and also due to their overall good performance standards they have been able to create a good favourable impression with the Customs Authorities.

SHIPPING

Specializing in booking over 1600 containers for the organization's merchandise in a given year, they have the best shipping lines competing to get business from them, offering the most profitable freight rates. The power of negotiation that they have is matchless and at times they even negotiate the freight for shipments bound for India from other countries. As a result of their clout they get more benefits compared to others and the savings are passed on to the final customer. Also since the past few years they have been working and supporting the best shipping lines and freight forwarders and have availed the best services in terms of economic rates, prompt feedback, scheduled delivery and transit times etc.

STORAGE AND WAREHOUSE

With a strong 5000 sq. ft. worth of facility they can arrange to store shipments for long as well as short term basis depending on the requirement of the customer. It is also the hub of all their moving operations.

Page 53: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

The organisation’s storage facility is well equipped with fire fighting equipment and has round the clock security. It is also pest and rodent free.

INSURANCE-INSURED FOR PEACE When we move with AIMS, we have total peace of mind. Each and every piece of customer’s goods is insured comprehensively. Their "All-Risks" policy covers domestic and international shipments From the time the goods leave the customer's premises to the customer's new home, subject to policy terms and conditions. Moreover, their capable team takes care of nitty grit-ties since claiming your insurance is a painful process.

LOADING INFORMATION To enable save time during customs clearance, the organisation recommend that all electronic appliances be loaded in one lift van. A separate list of major electronic appliances with their make, model number, quantity, value and year of purchase will also prove beneficial during customs examination.

SHIPMENT INFORMATION All lift vans / packages must be marked with the Consignee's Name C/o. AIMS Logistics and address. Since removal of shipping containers for delivery is not feasible / allowed at certain ports in India they strongly recommend that the shipment be loaded in lift-vans to avoid chances of damage due to multiple handling, pilferage and theft. LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

In military science, logistics is concerned with maintaining army supply lines while disrupting those of the enemy, since an armed force without resources and transportation is defenseless. Military logistics was already practiced in the ancient world and as the modern military has a significant need for logistics solutions, advanced implementations have been developed. In military logistics, logistics officers manage how and when to move resources to the places they are needed.

Logistics management is the part of supply chain management and supply chain engineering that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective forward, and reverse flow and storage of goods, services, and related information between the point of origin and point of consumption to meet customer's requirements. The complexity of logistics can be modeled, analyzed, visualized, and optimized by dedicated simulation software. The minimization of the use of resources is a common motivation in all logistics fields. A professional working in the field of logistics management is called a logistician.

After World War II, many U.S. enterprise businesses recognized the importance of logistics and started to take advantage of logistics services beginning in 1960 and continuing to the present.

Page 70: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

The definition of logistics is as follows: The efficient planning and implementation of all kinds of products, services, and information flow in the supply chain from the starting point to the end point to meet customers’ needs, including transport, storage and control. The logistics of supplying materials and information within the supply chain is the bridge between suppliers and customers.

Logistics activities or Functions of logistics in an organization

1. Order processing.

2. Materials handling.

3. Warehousing.

4. Inventory control.

5. Transportation.

6. Packaging.

Challenges faced by Logistics Industry

Business models pose challenges for logistics companies Factors like the growing demands of the client, changing needs of consumers, and complicated

Impact of COVID-19 in Logistics

Logistics and transport services constitute an integral part of buyers’ supply chain. The continuity of operations for a majority of industries is heavily reliant on the service assurance provided by vendors in the logistics and transport industry in the US. Evidently, the blockade of geographical borders and clampdown orders imposed on all the transportation services to limit the impact of COVID 19 have restricted the scopes of service delivery in the logistics and transport industry in the US. Like a chain reaction, it has triggered a blackout in the operational momentum across

Statistics of India Logistics

The country's industry is projected to be worth $215 billion by 2020-21, recording a 10 per cent compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over its approximate size of $160 billion in 2016-17.

The industry's growth will be fueled by the strides in manufacturing, retail, fast-moving consumer goods and e-commerce sectors. Development of related infrastructure, like dedicated freight corridors, parks, free trade warehousing zones and container freight stations, are expected to improve efficiency, a report by CARE Ratings observed.

Page 71: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

At present, the logistics sector is dominated by transportation, which has over 85 per cent share in value terms. Its share is set to remain high for the next few years. The remaining 15 per cent share is accounted for by storage. The sector is employment intensive, absorbing 22 million people.

Logistics costs have a significant bearing on exports. It is estimated that slashing logistics costs by 10 per cent could widen exports by five to eight per cent.

Steep logistics costs in India vis-a-vis other nations have been a vexing issue. Logistics costs as a percentage of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is 13-14 per cent. The figure is higher compared to 10-11 per cent for BRIC countries and eight to nine per cent for developing nations. USA spends 9.5 per cent of the GDP on logistics, while Germany is even more competitive with a share of eight per cent. Higher logistics costs in India could be ascribed to the lack of efficient inter-modal and multi-modal traditional systems, the ratings agency said in its report.

Going ahead, the logistics costs as a share of the GDP is expected to decline, led by initiatives like the implementation of goods and services tax (GST), investments in road infrastructure, development of inland waterways and coastal shipping, and the thrust on dedicated freight corridors.

At present, the India is highly fragmented and unorganised. Owing to the presence of numerous unorganised players in the industry, it remains fragmented, with the organised players accounting for approximately 10 per cent of the total market share. With the consumer base of the sector encompassing a wide range of industries, including retail, automobile, telecom, pharmaceuticals and heavy industries, has been increasingly attracting investments in the last decade.

Further, the logistics industry faces challenges such as under-developed material handling infrastructure, fragmented warehousing, multiple regulatory and policy-making bodies, lack of seamless movement of goods across modes, and minimal integrated IT infrastructure. In order to develop this sector, focus on new technology, improved investment, skilling, removing bottlenecks, improving intermodal transportation, automation, a single-window system for giving clearances, and simplifying processes would be required.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGAMENT

HR Management Strategy and Logistics Workforce Performance

A high-performance supply chain is essential for any company to stay in front of the competition, and contrary to what many IT aficionados would have you believe, people are still the critical ingredient in supply chain performance.

At a time when many companies prioritise technology implementation and partner selection over logistics workforce development, your company can achieve a competitive advantage by investing in the performance of labour and management resources.

Choose the Right HR Management Strategy

To leverage the potential of your people most effectively, it’s paramount to ensure the right HR management strategy is in place to hire, train, retain and optimise your logistics workforce.

This strategy of course will depend upon the business goals and the culture within your company, but to promote excellence in logistics workforce performance, will probably fall into one of the following three general categories:

A results-based strategy, which rewards employees for meeting KPI targets

A strategy which rewards people on the basis of behaviour rather than outcomes

A development-focused strategy, which rewards employees for actively pursuing their

own skills development

Page 80: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

Whichever strategy is chosen, personnel management and performance-based remuneration will need to be based on clearly defined goals and metrics.

Keeping the Logistics Workforce on Track

To ensure your logistics workforce HR strategy is executed successfully, the following steps (which are omitted surprisingly often, even by companies professing to invest in their people) must be planned and put into effect:

1. Implementation of Performance Metrics

This is the first step in a successful logistics workforce HR strategy. Performance metrics must be developed which make sense for your business and are aligned with business and supply chain goals.

2. Secure Management and Workforce Buy-in

Too many companies make the mistake of implementing metrics without talking to those whose performance will be measured. KPIs will be worthless if your managers and staff don’t see them as realistic or achievable—and more worthless still if nobody understands them.

3. Make Metrics Easy to Track

The more workforce performance metrics you implement, the easier you must make it to religiously track them.

This may require an investment in better business analytics tools, especially if your company is still working with spreadsheets for reporting and data analysis. If your metrics are not easily monitored, they probably won’t be monitored for long.

HR Management Matters to the Logistics Workforce

The steps outlined above can help your HR team play its part in a successful supply chain. While there is no doubt that technology is a key enabler for supply chain success, the best IT applications are impotent without a logistics workforce to manage and operate them.

Page 81: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

By applying an HR management strategy to incentivize and engage logistics teams, your company can maintain an edge over its competitors, many of whom become increasingly reliant on IT as a supply chain panacea.

Let their mistake be your advantage—get the best from the people AND the technology deployed in your logistics operation, by keeping on top of HR management strategy and execution.

Improper packing

Abandonment of cargo

Rejection of goods by customs

Failure to pay or collect account

Inherent vice, (infestation or loss due to nature of the product itself)

Employee conversion or dishonesty

Losses due to delay or market loss

Goods subject to an on-deck bill of lading

IMPACT OF COVID-19 Logistics and transport services constitute an integral part of buyers’ supply chain.

Post COVID-19, the global logistics market size is projected to grow from USD 2,734 billion in 2020 to USD 3,215 billion by 2021, at a Y-O-Y of 17.6%. The major drivers of this market are increasing focus on the continued supply of essential commodities, creation of supply chain stabilization task force to fight COVID-19, and growing demand and distribution of personal protective equipment. The factors that restrain the market are labor shortage and a shortage of COVID-19 testing kits. The projection for 2021 is estimated to be down by over 10-15% as compared to the pre-COVID-19 estimation.

FMCG is expected to have the largest market sizing in the global logistics market during the forecast period. FMCG and healthcare are among the major industries facing prominent logistics challenges. Most consumers are experiencing the fear of limited availability of fast-moving consumer goods as well as healthcare goods such as disinfectants. Most countries are experiencing supply pressure due to panic buying by consumers amid COVID-19 impact. As a result, FMCG companies are continuously tracking the current situation and are coming up with new strategies to ensure continued supply. The agriculture sector has been exempted from the restrictions laid by the countries. This has ensured sufficient supplies of food and other daily needs products. E-groceries continue to meet the increasing demand for daily supplies by the consumers. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Walmart Grocery application hit all-time high downloads in the US. Roadways is the largest segment for the logistics market by mode of transport. Roadways are relatively less affected by the COVID-19's impact on the logistics sector when compared with airways and waterways.Trucking is seen as a critical mode of transport amid the pandemic. However, the primary concern faced by the road transport segment is driver shortage and ensuring the health safety of the available drivers as well as their infrastructure. Being the preferred mode of transport for essential goods, road transport is relied upon heavily for the continued supply of food, medicine, and other essential products. Asia Pacific to have the largest market size during the forecast period Asia Pacific is expected to have the largest logistics market size as the region has taken stringent and quite early measures to contain the virus outspread.China has started to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic faster than any other country. Only some provinces of the entire country are in lockdown after the second wave of COVID-

Page 92: A STUDY ON THE COMPANY GOODRICH MARITIME LOGISTICS …

19.The World Health Organization has also appreciated India's control over the spread of the pandemic. This has allowed the logistics and supply chain companies to meet consumer demands during the pandemic situation. The supply of vital products in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan has also regained normalcy. Thus, Asia Pacific region is expected to show positive signs in the near future as the supply chain industry recovers gradually. In-depth interviews were conducted with CEOs, marketing directors, innovation and technology directors, and executives from various key organizations operating in the logistics and supply chain marketplace. • By Company: Logistics Companies - 60% and Others - 40% • By Designation: Directors- 60%, C level - 40% • By Region: Asia Pacific - 80%, Europe - 10%, and Others - 10% Note: Others in Company Type include Industry Consultants and in the region includes other regions such as North America and RoW. Some of the key players in the logistics and supply chain industry are DHL (Germany), UPS (US), FedEx (US), Kuehne+Nagel (Switzerland), CEVA Logistics (Switzerland), DB Schenker (Germany), SNCF (France), XPO Logistics (US), Kenco Group (US), and Hitachi Transport System (Japan). The study includes an analysis of the key strategies and practices followed by these players to handle the impact of COVID-19.
