We received this thank you note early in 2015 from a wish child named Addison. She wished to go to Walt Disney World with her family. We can think of no better way to communicate to the Dayton community the impact of your generosity and support. The tremendous support of the Dayton region for our families continues to inspire. In 2015 we received a record amount of donor support, buoyed by the many third-party events and our two signature events, the Valentines Dance and the Superhero Donut Run. The popularity of the Valentines Dance required a change in venue to accommodate the largest crowd yet. WSU’s Nutter Center transformed

their arena into a wonderful space to host the Dayton’s Dancing with the Stars fundraiser. We raised over $65,000 and are already poised to surpass that amount in 2016. Our first ever Superhero Donut Run presented by Bill’s Donut Shop and Primrose Schools of Centerville and Yankee was a huge success. We hosted more than 500 runners at the Bill’s Donut Shop parking lot on a beautiful Saturday morning last April. We anticipate this event to grow year over year and provide not only needed funds, but extend our reach in the Dayton region. ASW is always thankful for the support of Dayton Children’s Hospital. Our almost 30-year partnership has provided the best possible connection to our Wish Kids and their families and has enabled us to be able to fulfill our mission daily, and to do it in a cost-effective manner.

We have compiled for you in this 2015 Report to the Community the many individuals, businesses and organizations who were able to give in excess of $250. There are so many donors and volunteers who without we absolutely could not achieve our mission to be Dayton’s only wish-granting organization, granting the wish of every eligible child. To keep up-to-date on our families, events and other information, please visit www.aspecialwishdayton.org and our facebook page at aspecialwishdayton. Together… we will continue to make a child’s very Special Wish come true!!!

11-year-old Matthew Fox of Vandalia loves the great outdoors and his very own camper seemed to be the perfect fit for this young nature lover. Through a generous partnership with Colerain RV, Bonbright Distributors and Five Rivers Metro Parks, A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter (ASW) was able to make Matthew’s very Special Wish come true for his own “man cave” on wheels. Matthew’s journey began with suffering from persistent headaches. After a visit to the pediatrician and subsequent MRI, he was diagnosed with a non-

malignant brain tumor. Following the diagnosis, Matthew underwent eight hours of brain surgery at Dayton Children’s Hospital. The tumor and his eventual

surgery were so invasive that Matthew lost significant adrenal and thyroid function, and also much of his peripheral vision. He also struggles with tiring easily, loud noises and crowds. Matthew and his family are planning their first big camping trip this spring. He is looking forward to spending time with his family including his two brothers who are serving in the armed forces.

Kierstin Yoho, a 7-year-old Middletown girl and her family, including twin sister Katelyn, brother Austin and sister Mackenzie, stayed at Give Kids the World Village (GKTW) in December 2015 and visited many Orlando attractions, including a stop at the Magic Kingdom to celebrate Christmas with Mickey Mouse. Both Kierstin and her twin sister Katelyn have a genetic disorder called William’s Syndrome (WS). Characterized by many medical and developmental problems, people with WS are very social and friendly, and the Yoho twins are no different. Kiertin’s mother Tiffany conveyed the sentiment shared by so many of our wish families. She said, “we just wanted

to thank you guys at A Special Wish Foundation and everyone that was involved in making Kierstin’s wish come true! She had so much fun, and we all got to spend some much needed time together as a family having fun!” The Xavier University Chapter of Distance 4 Dreams, an organization that started at the University of Dayton, raised the funds for Kierstin’s Special Wish.

A Special Wish Foundation gives a special thank you to all of our donors who have helped make Special Wishes come true during the 2015 calendar year.

Dayton Children’s Hospital has been a partner with A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter (ASW) since the beginning. We are honored to be the only wish-granting organization affiliated with Dayton Children’s. With their generous support, ASW has been able to grant the Special Wishes for over 1,600 children in the Dayton region and to maintain low administrative expenses so more of the funds raised each year go to granting wishes.

Give Kids The World Village (GKTW) is a 79-acre resort designed exclusively for wish children and their families. Wish Kids and their families vacation among the many other families facing similar difficulties. There they find comfort, hope and as much ice cream as they want each and every day during their stay. In 2014, GKTW provided nearly $125K in in-kind guest services for our wish families. As a valued partner, GKTW helps us provide cost-free vacations in the Orlando area for children facing life-threatening diagnoses. Thank you GKTW!

THANK YOU, DAYTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL!

The Gniazdowskis are often seen at ASW events around town. They nearly always say yes to volunteer requests and also support the Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation financially. They unfortunately know well what families go through and how important a wish is to a child. Their son Daniel lost his battle with Hunter Syndrome at the age of 7, but not before the family made some wonderful memories at Walt Disney World. Anne and Tom have a strong desire to give back. ASW is honored to have their help and support!

It is very fitting to name an award after Ruth Wiles. She began volunteering at ASW in 1988 to help her daughter Teresa, then a board member, deliver wishes. Ruth was the organization’s first employee from 1990 until 1995 when she retired. Since then she has spent countless hours doing everything from keeping track of donations to continuing to deliver wishes. Ruth epitomizes volunteerism. Following in her footsteps is the very first recipient of the Ruth Wiles Volunteer of the Year award, Katie McGrath. Katie was a two-year intern from Wright State University at the ASW office and a favorite among wish families. She was a recognized as an outstanding student leader at WSU for three straight years and service permeates her every move. Congrats, Katie!

There are few events in the Dayton region that are as unique and fun as the Valentines Dance and the event in 2015 was the largest one yet. What started as a small fundraiser in 2005 with 150 in attendance, this event chaired by Union Savings Bank’s Dona Niswonger has grown into one of the largest fundraisers in Dayton. 2015 was the first year this event was held at the WSU Nutter Center, a move made to accommodate the growth of the event. Over 600 guests were hosted on this the 10th anniversary of the “Dayton’s Dancing with the Stars” Valentines Dance and over $65,000 was raised. With the new venue, support from Dayton’s business leaders and independent and professional dancers from Elegance in Dance, the Valentines Dance will continue to be the largest fundraiser for the Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation.

10TH ANNUAL VALENTINES DANCE

SPECIAL EVENTS

The very first Superhero Donut Run was help on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Bill’s Donut Shop in Centerville. A new event for ASW, this 5K and Fun Run hosted more than 500 runners on a gorgeous spring day. Presented by Bill’s Donuts and

Primrose Schools, this event raised over $8,000, but more importantly reached thousands of potential supporters through new marketing and outreach. Dressed in their finest superhero costumes, runners and their families raised money for ASW and had fun in the process. This new event is destined to become a Dayton favorite.
