Portsmouth West High School will present the seventy-second graduating class on Sunday, May 20, 2012, 2:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

South Webster Schools admin-istration, faculty and staff will be conducting the district’s 100th Commencement on Sunday, May 20, in the high school gymnasium.

Five students will be sharing honors as Class Valedictorians. Each student earned a perfect 4.00 grade point average. They are:

• Nathaniel DeCamp, son of Dennis and Wilma DeCamp, will be pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering as a ROTC Cadet at the University of Dayton.

• Erin Frances Homerosky, daughter of Frank and Mary Homerosky, will be attending The Ohio State University, pursuing a degree in Biology.

• Emily Lawrence, daughter of Larry and Susan Lawrence. Emily will be at-tending The University of Kentucky, ma-joring in Communication Disorders.

You’ve been named valedictorian … Now what?The title of valedictorian is an honor

that only one person receives every year. Planning the right speech requires fore-thought and creative ideas.

The person in school who receives the highest grade rank is named the valedic-torian and it is customary for he or she to give a speech at the commencement cer-emony. The speech serves as a farewell to the graduating class and often remarks on the possibilities for the future.

Valedictorian speeches are an opportu-nity to address the entire class and high-

light the class camaraderie. The valedic-torian is serving as the voice of all the graduates, and should include them in the speech.

Here are some ideas to consider when drafting a valedictorian speech.

• Be short and to the point. Chances are there will be a number of different speakers on commencement day. Attend-ees will appreciate brevity.

• Use a current point of reference, such as acknowledging something mak-ing headlines or a favorite celebrity, as a

way to break the ice. Be sincere and try to inject some humor into the speech. As a speaker you can refer to this initial quote or mention at the summary of the speech as well.

• Talk about what the school has pro-vided for you and favorite moments throughout the last few years. Then open up the speech about how friends and fel-low graduates made the experiences even more poignant.

• Be sure to thank teachers and men-tors who played a role in your success.

Feel free to call out a special person who went above and beyond to help make you the person you are today.

• Praise fellow classmates and their ac-complishments.

• Talk about plans for the future and refer to how the education provided offers a stable basis for jumping off into jobs and future projects.

• Thank your audience for their time.These are just basic guidelines that can
