T h e C a r i b b e a n Islands are a popular honey moon dest i -nation for a reason: They a re c los e to m a i n l a n d Un i t e d States, but still out of the country (unless Puerto Rico is your destination of choice), offer an exotic culture w i t h o u t r o b b i n g your wallet and offer up the white sand

Cons: You won’t be seeing much, if any, of the local culture.

All-inclusive resorts tend to isolate them-s e lve s f r o m t h e i r settings, which lends to the “world away f r o m e ve r y t h i n g ” feeling.

Island-HopPros: Improvements

Cons: Advent ure can be exhaust ing, especially after the stress of a big event such as a wedding. (This is it. There are no other cons. Go!)

can be one of the hardest decisions a woman makes. It is built up through history,

through the media and through the sheer fact that it is most likely one of the most expensive garment purchases she will make in her lifetime.

Dress Trends

MinimalistForgo the compli-

cated bustles, layers of tulle and overly embellished details in favor of a simple stunner. Remember, you wa nt to wea r the dress, the dress shouldn’t wear you. Dresses that stick to simple lines and luxe

fabrics allow you to shine. Make sure it fits like a dream and you will feel like you’re in a fairytale all evening.

Off The ShoulderO pen bac k s a nd

plunging necklines are ever y where in bridal fashion these days, and while both are alluring options for f la sh i ng some skin, don’t overlook their more demure a n d c l a s s i c , “o f f -the-shoulder” sister. O f f - t h e - s h o u l d e r d r e s s e s s c r e a m romance but give more detail than strapless gowns. The best part? So many designers are incorporating the

t rend that you are guaranteed to f ind one in your style — whether covered in lace or a more struc-tured satin fashion.

BlushingThis is the time of

year when the days are longer and the sun k isses the sky at dusk, throwing a pink haze over every-thing. Why not have your dress match the long summer nights in a blushing shade of pink? Blush-colored dresses range in hues of a whispery light pink to a deeper rose. Ombre dresses — or d resses t hat layer color to start lighter

and deepen with the length of the dress — embrace the summer season wit h g usto and real ly a l low a bride to flaunt some personality.

and Mia Farrow both went short on their big day, and you can’t get more iconic than that. Embrace the summer heat, show some leg (tastefully, of course), a nd evoke a c h ic , old Hollywood style. Whether you choose a mini or a dress that shows your ankles but no more, you are guar-anteed to have all eyes on you.

Ask the Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer can be a tricky business. Start by finding a photographer to whom both you and your fiance are drawn through their personal style. But what else do you need to know? There are several questions you need answered before you hand over a check.

JUNE BRIDE June 2017H o w m a n y

w e d d i n g s h a v e you shot, and how many do you shoot in a year?

Why to ask: This will tell you several t h ings. You want to know that this is his profession, and he has shot enough w e d d i n g s t o b e sufficiently experi-enced to deal with the pressures that come on the big day. You a lso want to know you will be prioritized on your day. You don’t want a photographer that overloads himself.

Will you be my photog rapher, or will it be one of your partners (or assistants)?

Why to a sk : I f you a re book i ng wit h a group (or anyone that is more than a one-person show) make sure you speak with the p erson who w i l l actually be shooting your wedding.

W h a t i s y o u r favorite part of a wedding?

W h y t o a s k : This can tel l you a lo t ab out how y o u r p h o t o g r a -pher appr oac he s weddings and what she m ight i n her-e n t l y p a y m o r e

at tent ion to. It is important that you find someone who shares your priori-ties and helps you see the beauty in moments you might overlook.

W h a t t y p e o f packages do you offer?

Why to ask: You c a n n o t c o m p a r e photog raphers i f yo u do n ’t k n ow what is included for the pr ice. Pr ints? Digital copies? Do they put together an album or include an engagement shoot for free? How many hours of coverage do you get?

Wi ll touc h-ups h a p p e n b e f o r e or after I see the proofs?

W h y t o a s k : Touch-ups are how p h o t o s b e c o m e magazine-worthy. Some photographers

wil l perform this tec h n ique on a l l your photos, while others only want to spend t ime doing this on photos you choose.

W h a t i s y o u r deposit and refund policy?

Why to ask: Know t h e p a r t i c u l a r s . When is the money d u e a n d w h a t happens i f catas-trophe strikes and you have to post-pone or cancel?

Do you prefer to work off a shot list

or capture events and festivities as they unfold?

Why to a sk : It is good to f ind a photographer who works on a mixture o f t h e s e t w o approaches. While a shot list provides a guide (and guar-antees that you get at least one photo w i t h g r a n d m a ) you a re h i r i ng a photog rapher for his expertise. Allow him to capture the events whi le you f o c u s o n l i v i n g them.

How long af ter the wedding before we see the photos?

Why to ask: You will be wanting to see photos of your wedding the very n e x t d ay. W h i l e this is impossible, knowing when you w i l l get to c lasp eyes on them will help you manage the waiting.

Add a Belly BandA bel ly ba nd (a

thick piece of paper that wraps around your invitat ion) is both beautiful and functional. You can use bands printed in a complementary print or for a pop of color, all the while keeping your invitation and coordinating inserts organized.

Line the EnvelopesBelly bands aren’t

the only place to incor-porate some pattern or color to your invites. Consider lining the envelopes. This can be

done inexpensively by investing a little time, a lot of patience and scrapbooking paper from your local craft store.

Mix Paper ColorsContemplate using

d i f ferent, comple-ment i ng colors of paper for each piece of your invitations. Instead of white for everything, maybe choose cream-colored i nv i t a t io n s b ut a brightly colored enve-lope. Or use a solid color for your invi-tation and a muted print for your RSVP cards.

Consider TextureTry out different

paper samples, as not all are created equal. Linen paper provides a thicker feel and sense of luxury. Or forgo paper completely and transfer your invi-tat ions to another s u r f a c e , s u c h a s w o o d e n s l a t s o r vintage handkerchiefs.

P l a y w i t h t h e Edging

While traditionally invitations have had sharp, square edging, this does not have to be the case. Think outside the box and give your invitations rounded corners or

scalloped edges.

Create a SuiteThere is so much

more to invitations now than envelopes, R S V P c a r d s a n d the invitation itself. Create a s epa rate card for each piece of information: a card for the reception, one for direct ions and even a separate card for you r wedd i ng website. Expanding your invitations into a suite can make your wedding feel like the event of the season. Pocket fold envelopes can keep your invi-tation suite neat and organized.

While holding weddings in a church remains the most popular venue for marriage celebrations, more and more

brides are seeking alternative settings. Summer can be a great season to embrace the great outdoors and work with the beauty of nature for your wedding.

Taking it Outdoors

Consider the pros a nd c o n s o f t h e following options.

A BackyardPros: If you know

someone with a large

backyard or have one yourself, this location can be a great option for keeping costs low. There will be almost no rules for how you ca n decorate a nd

who you can work with. (Be respectful of your host, of course.) Stringing lights across the yard? Go for it. In love with a certain caterer? Book them w it hout wor r y i ng i f t h e y a r e o n a preferred vendors list.

Cons: Be aware that outdoor venues don’t hold the same acous-tics as many indoor venues; this can make it hard for guests to hear the ceremony. Consider small micro-phones that can be worn discreetly, or be prepared to feel like you’re shout ing in order for the back row to hear the nuptials.

The BeachPros: The beac h

c a n b e a mag ic a l place to get married. I m a g i n e wa l k i n g barefoot toward your significant other, a gentle breeze blowing through your hair, all with the sound of waves crashing softly aga i n st t he shore behind you.

Cons: Of course, the gentle breeze could be a st rong wind, depending on the day. And this might not be the venue for you if you are worried about your dress gett ing untidy and perhaps a bit wet.

Inns and B&BsPros: Probably the

best aspect of hosting an outdoor wedding at an inn or bed and breakfast over the backyard of a loved one is that there is an option to stay. Don’t want your guests to worry about transpor-tation? They can book a room and stay the night. The celebration can continue for as long as you wish.

Cons: You may have to rent out the entire place in order to host the ceremony or reception at a bed and breakfast. While incredibly beautiful, bed and breakfasts are usually on the smaller side, so if you have to move the party inside for any reason, it can start to feel cramped very quickly.

Vineyards & Wineries

Pros: These venues also normally offer s t u n n i n g i n d o o r opt ions in case of inclement weather, making your invest-ment feel more secure.

C o n s : W i n e r i e s and vineyards can be very expensive. These locations have gone vogue for wedding venues in the last decade, so expect to pay top dollar for the privilege.

Whether you’re planning outdoor nuptials or a reception in the comfort of air conditioning, there are a lot of things to consider while preparing decor.

Seasonal Touches

Page 13: A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO DAILY …...length of the dress — embrace the summer season with gusto and really allow a bride to flaunt some personality. Short Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow

JUNE BRIDEJune 2017While details feel

important, don’t get lost i n t hem. Pick just a few areas and c o n c e n t r a t e y o u r efforts there. If you invest your labors in concentrated areas, your guests are sure to notice your hard work.

Create a Focal Point If you are having

an outdoor ceremony, the area you will defi-nitely want to focus on is creating an altar. This can be done by choosing a location that already provides a landmark, such as a live oak.

Consider hanging a large piece of luxe

fabric behind the offi-c ia nt , or s ta ndi ng between two large planters filled with flowers or greenery. Other places on which you might want to concentrate could be the dance floor or head table, if you choose to have one.

Let There Be Light P a y i n g s p e c i a l

attention to lighting at your event can be a great way to punch up the style of your su m mer we dd i ng. Cafe lights are great for i l luminating an outdoor ceremony or recept ion, and any type of strung lighting

complements white paper lanterns hung at varying levels.

Mason jars can be found on the cheap at many flea markets and yard sales and are the perfect vessel for containing small votive candles. You can create dimension by placing lanterns of various heights on tables or lining door-ways. If you are after a real “wow” factor, plan a send-off with sparklers.

Have Fun Communicating

Guests are t here h a p p i e s t w h e n they are informed.

Ever yone l i k e s to know what to expect, where to go and what they need to do. Have fun communicating to your guests. Sandwich b o a r d s (t h e t wo -sided c ha l kboa rds common ly seen i n cafes) are a great way to point guests in the direction of seating, the dance floor or the ceremony space if you are hosting the cere-mony and reception in the same location.

Easels are fantastic for displaying menus or placards, and chalk board hangtags add a special touch to drink stat ions and buffet tables.

Starting A Life Together?We’ll Help

Once the excitement of being engaged settles in, you will need to begin to plan the nuptials. Many brides-to-be can’t wait to start trying on dresses — but before you head to the boutique, there are

other items on your to-do list.

Wedding Planning 101

Here are the first few things you need think about:

Pick A StyleHave a conversat ion w it h

your f iance and discuss how you want your wedding to feel. Fun and festive? Intimate and sophisticated?

Has one of you always dreamed

Page 15: A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO DAILY …...length of the dress — embrace the summer season with gusto and really allow a bride to flaunt some personality. Short Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow

JUNE BRIDE 15June 2017of ma rr y i ng ba re -foot on a beach or on the lawn of a stately mansion? What are the most vital elements of t he wedding to each of you? Decide what ’s most impor-tant to each of you and compromise.

Decide On A Timeline

Wh ile t he ava i l-ability of your most coveted vendors will help you choose an exact date, you still need to think about other factors that will impact your timeline: Is there a season or time of year you hope to marry in, or avoid? Hol idays or ot her fa m i ly events you need to work around?

Yo u a l s o m i g ht consider how much t ime you need for planning and prepa-rations. The answers to all of these ques-tions will help shape the timeline of your wedding.

Set Your BudgetThis can be one of

the most difficult tasks

of wedding planning. You ne ed to have sit-down conversa-tions with each other, and with each set of parents, to be clear who will be contrib-uting what when it comes to finances.

These numbers will impact every other decision you make, and you don’t want to plan or purchase based on assumptions.

B o o k P r i o r i t y Vendors

Pr ior it y vendors will be the people in charge of the elements most importa nt to you and your fiance. The most significant of these vendors will likely be your venue.

You r venue w i l l i mpac t a l mo st a l l other aspects of your wedding — including your date. Another vendor who will likely take top billing is your photographer. Be sure to research all your options to secure the best price with the extra amenities you want.

The first question you will hear after getting engaged is, “When is the big day?” It’s not hard to round up inspi-ration for autumn nuptials.

5 Reasons for a Fall Wedding

H e r e a r e f i v e reasons why fall is the perfect time of year for getting married.

1. (More) predict-a b l e w e a t h e r . Te mp erat u r e s a r e falling and the leaves are changing, which m e a n s yo u do n ’t have to worry about prof use sweat i ng. Inclement weather also is less likely than springtime weather to impact your plans, which makes outdoor e v e n t s l e s s o f a gamble. The flexibility of cool weather defi-nitely has a lot to offer.

2 . J e w e l t o n e s . Deep purples, burnt oranges, vivid reds and woodsy greens all take center stage in the fall. Since these

colors occur natu-rally this time of year, incorporating them into your decor will feel lush and organic.

3. Cute accessories. There are some seri-ously swoon-worthy accessories that you just can’t incorporate in a spring or summer wedding. Think cozy flannel blankets set out for guests or thick chunky-knit shawls for the bridesmaids. This also is the perfect time of year, as the nights get chilly, to add a soft cape to your bridal look.

4. Budget-friendly d e c o r . U s e t h e c h a n g i n g o f t h e seasons as your stun-ning backdrop. Make bare branches look

elegant in tall vases, arrange pumpk ins a nd you r favor ite f lowers as center-pieces, or use apples as place card holders. With fall decor, it is all about keeping it simple. Pick just a few elements and utilize them throughout for a big impact.

5. The food. Did we mention apples are in season? This means apple cider, apple-cider donuts, caramel apple s a nd apple pie. Not to mention t he ot her goodies that are only good in cooler temperatures, such as spiked cocoa, bacon-wrapped figs, hearty soup courses a nd r o a s t e d r o o t vegetables.

Fall Color Combos

C o n s i d e r w h a t type of mood and tone you want to set on your big day and then draw inspira-tion from the things around you, such as your dress and venue. The autumn season offers a wide palette to choose from; here are just a few options

to consider.

C r a n b e r r y a nd Blush

This is a great color palette if you are after a soft and dreamy feel with a hint of the autumn season. While blush screams romance, a cranberry color punches up this

combo. Cranberry red is one

of the richest colors of the fall but is also a warm tone — contrib-ut ing to t hat cozy feeling. This “dress-up, dress-down” combo easily complements a rustic barn wedding or a lavish celebration.

Navy and DoveIf you are after an

elegant and sophisti-cated affair, then this color combo is a great option for you. This chic combo is stun-ning in the fall because it allows nature to do all the work. Choose a rustic backdrop and keep the decor simple and elegant.

Chocolate, Cinnamon and Eggplant

Choose earthy tones and embrace a shabby

chic aesthetic. Work a lot of natural wood into your decor, accent with large branches, a n d p l a y t h e s e elements of f more lu xu r ious accents, such as rich fabrics and soft, lush flowers.

Pumpkin, Apple and Sage

Embrace the harvest and use it for your inspiration. Use small w h i t e p u m p k i n s pa i nted w it h gold table numbers, apples tucked into bouquets and pomegranates at every place setting. Just remember to keep t he deta i l s s i mple and c lean because these colors add the drama. Think crisp white invitations with apple-red envelopes, for example, to keep things sophisticated and streamlined.

It’s All About The Veil

T h e c a t h e d r a l , embell ished veil is back, and it’s making a statement. Veils are the go-to bridal accessory of the fall, so allow yours to make a state-ment. Cathedral veils are known for their adornments of lace and beading. Due to

their length, they are traditionally secured separately from any headpiece you may choose, and therefore are easy to detach without disturbing the rest of your look.

Applique, PleaseApplique is all about

adding dimension. Think flora and fauna, lots of embroidery and add-on lace details. Feminine and fashion-forward, this detailing is sure to make you feel conf ident and beautiful on your big day.

Registering is one of the most fun tasks on any wedding plan-ning to-do list. Going to stores and choosing things for your

new home together is exciting and can melt away the stress of other aspects of planning.

Registry Must-Haves

However, even the most diligent bride and groom will tell you that there are t h i ngs t hey w i sh they had registered for. Even if you don’t think someone will

buy you these items, put them on your r e g i s t r y a ny way. M o s t r e t a i l e r s offer a discount on un-bought registry items.

Here’s what you

Kitchen KnivesThe best investment

you can make in your k itchen is in high-quality knives. Think k n ive s t h at do n’t come in a set. This allows you to choose i nd iv idua l k n ive s that meet your needs and mix and match brands.

A Quality Vacuum Cleaner

It i s t i me for a s e r i o u s v a c u u m . Higher-end vacuums also frequently come with manufacturer warranties — so when it goes on the fritz you should be able to get it repaired or replaced.

A Dutch OvenT h i s u n i v e r s a l

kitchen item is a life-time lifesaver. It can go from stovetop to oven to grill, is great for soups and braising meats, and can be subst it uted at any time for other cook-ware pieces, should you choose or need to.

Iron Or SteamerIroning is a basic

sk i l l that everyone should know. If the task seems too time-consuming, go for the steamer. This handy tool takes wrinkles out of clothing without making contact with the fabric.

Bath TowelsEven i f you a nd

your fiance currently l ive toge t h e r a nd have towels, register for new ones — nicer ones. Quality towels can be pricey and not necessarily something you will want to invest in later. Plus, you will find that good bath towels get softer with use rather than nubby and coarse.

LuggageLuggage is a great

registry item because it is often expensive and most high-end lines on the market have a lifetime guar-antee. Don’t forget, you will most likely be using it soon on your honeymoon.

Rugs

I t e m s f o r y o u r home together make great registry items, but these pieces are o f t e n ove rlo ok e d. Rugs br ing bot h a “homey” feeling and put-together look to a room. However, they are expensive — so let someone else splurge for you.

Fun GearT h i s c o u l d b e

camping gear, water sport accessories — whatever your hobbies are. Many couples are choosing to set up “honeymoon regis-t r ies,” where t hey reg ister for excur-sions or add-ons that guests can purchase to enhance the couple’s trip.
