NEXT SHPA GENERAL
MEETING The next meeting of the Association
for 2010 will be held on Wednesday
14th April, 2010 in The South Hobart Community Centre, 42
D'Arcy Street, South Hobart 7004
commencing at 8:00 pm. All
residents, especially those new to
the suburb, are welcome to attend.
END OF BONFIRE NIGHT The Association is saddened to have
to report that the Annual Bonfire & Fireworks Night, which has been a
part of South Hobart life for the
past fifteen or sixteen years, is no
more. Bureaucratic red tape has
finally effectively killed off
fireworks in Tasmania. To fall into
line with Mainland states, the State
Government has enacted legislation
which makes it virtually impossible
for community organisations, such as
ours, to put on these events. The
only Tasmanian company - Bright Star Fireworks - has been forced
out of business, with the closure of
its three stores. The cost of
retaining a Mainland fireworks
company to supply and fire such a
show would be prohibitive, even if
the Association could obtain
adequate public liability coverage.
To all those wonderful people who
have kindly volunteered their time
and skills to keep the event going in
2010, the Association is deeply
indebted. To all the kids and
parents who have patronised this
annual event, our sincere thanks for
your support and our apologies for
being unable to continue what has
become a South Hobart institution.

THE OAK TREE Cnr Southern Outlet /Macquarie
Street. The future of this landmark tree is
still to be determined. The HCC
applied to have the tree “trimmed”
to allow B-doubles and other large
vehicles to access the proposed “slip
lane” which Council plans to build on
land acquired from the historic
homestead, The Hermitage. The
Tasmanian Heritage Council refused
the Works Application which would
have allowed for the hundred year-
old oak tree to be virtually stripped
of all vegetation on the Macquarie
Street side to about the height of
the street lighting, severely
unbalancing the tree. The HCC has
appealed the decision to the RMPAT,
which, at a recent Directions
Hearing, allowed the Council a three
month delay in proceedings in order
to enable Council to “consult" with
the local community.
KEENS CURRY HOUSE
A Sense of Place
Known as “The Keens Curry House’ or
“Keens Curry Cottage”, the pink
cottage high on Keens Curry Hill has
been a highly visible South Hobart
landmark since the early ’20s. The
cottage was home to Graeme Wright
from 1936-2009, and he grew up
there with his mother Mrs. Thelma
Sellars and his brother Jeffrey.

Graeme did not own a car; he walked
everywhere – to and from Princes
Street Primary School; to work on
the wharves loading the apple boats;
to the CBD and the local shops. A
few years ago, when in his mid-70s,
Graeme and his huge, golden dog
“Oscar” even walked back from the
Dogs Home at Risdon Vale, where
“Oscar’ had been ‘confined’ after one
of his escapades. Graeme and Oscar
were a familiar sight around South
Hobart, and it was not always clear
who was taking whom for a walk!
Graeme’s childhood friend, Alan
Williams, tells how the boys secretly
hitched rides home from school up
Lynton Avenue by hanging under the
backs of the empty apple trucks
returning to the Huon. During
WW11, from their beds on the wide
front verandah, the boys watched
the searchlights over the River
Derwent as they looked for enemy
planes and ships. The boys also used
to sneak under the barbed wire and
past the sentries guarding the radio
station on top of the hill. Graeme
was an expert fruit and veggie
grower. He supplied his family, local
shop keepers and neighbours with
fresh produce, and his mother grew
dahlias, lilac, roses, geraniums, lilies
and spring bulbs to supplement her
income “cleaning the big houses of
Sandy Bay”. During the 1967
bushfires, Graeme used a kitchen
jug and water from the toilet
cistern to put out spot fires around
the Cottage. Many nearby houses
were destroyed as was the radio
station, but the Keens Curry House
survived. The Keens Curry Sign and
the Keens Curry House are Hobart
landmarks. They contribute to our
sense of place and are of historical
significance. The Keens Curry sign is
listed on the Tasmanian Heritage
Register, and its whitewashed
stones are often changed to reflect
social concerns such as “No Cable
Car”. If you have any further
information on the Keens Curry
House, please contact Rosemary
Sandford on 6224 4437.
