In 2013 after the nomination of Ccile Kyenge,an African Italian woman, as Minister of Integrationin the government of Enrico Letta, she was thesubject of several racial slurs by local and national

politicians. One was by Roberto Calderoli, aprominent figure of the anti-immigration andpopulist party Legal Nord, who said that wheneverhe saw Minister Kyenge, an orang-utan came to his

mind. After a few days, during a speech by Kyengeat a meeting of the Democratic Party, somemembers of the far-right and neo-fascist NewForce threw a clump of bananas at the minister.
